To think anyone who deliberately tortures animals must be severely psychologically damaged?

Apologies if anyone finds this upsetting.

Story in today's paper, I remember seeing it when it first happened. Some young men stole a pet rabbit, took bizarre photos of themselves in the bath, drinking beer, passing this poor soaking rabbit around (probably traumatised beyond belief) then killed it.

Today's story says the men involved have escaped jail. Now, I can perhaps understand the point of view that "it was just a rabbit" but for me, anyone who can put an animal through deliberate and sustained pain and distress must have something seriously wrong with them.

Maybe I'm being I'm being OTT but animal abuse stories really make my blood rise.

It's amazing how you can justify the torture and murder of animals when it benefits you. Hats off it's impressive to be able convince yourself it's ok to do immoral things whilst simultaneously being completely hypocritical.

There are some sick twats about :(

MortaIWombat · 04/10/2014 17:51

Roaring here at "swivel eyed lunacy". Grin

Poor bunny. There are plenty of sick fucks about. I've killed an animal to eat it, but I wouldn't do it otherwise.

PiperIsOrange · 04/10/2014 18:02

My brothers have killed wild rabbits, and I have eaten them. Also fish that has been caught and then eaten.

But torturing an animal to death that you don't plan to eat other than for sick pleasure it inhuman.

ILovePud · 04/10/2014 18:04

That case is horrific, I can't comprehend how people could do that to another living creature. I think the stick itsbetterthanabox is getting is out of order though and society does have a very fucked up attitude in the way it treats animals deemed as cute enough to be kept as pets vs those condemned to be eaten. There has been enough cases of abattoir workers treating animals with utter contempt and sadism to know that it's an industry I want no part of. I don't think meat eaters are terrible people, I think most people are just oblivious to the cruelty and don't think about where there food comes from. Some people do and just don't care and to be honest I do think that's a bit callous. Maybe you should read up about the meat industry and then if you're still eating meat then it's an informed choice. Most animals in the meat industry aren't subject to the same torture as that poor rabbit but your being naïvI if you don't think they suffer and intensively farmed ones live truly wretched lives before their deaths. I don't imagine they have any comprehension of or make distinctions between those who hurt and kill them for fun and those that do so for food

PacificDogwood · 04/10/2014 18:07

This is an awful case, and I remember one not that long ago where people doused a dog with petrol and set it on fire.

Much as I don't like the conditions in many abattoirs and animal transport conditions etc etc, I still don't think that they two compare.

Sick bastards.

ILovePud Every industry has their share of dirty laundry. Chocolate relies on child labor and slave wages on the cocoa farms. Coffee, same deal. That computer you're using? When you throw it out it'll be sent to a country under the guise of a "donation" where poverty stricken workers will sort through the waste to find salvageable parts to recycle for your next computer. Medicine is tested on animals in labs who are caged. Things made in your own country could be exploiting disabled people since the law doesn't require you to pay them min wage. Even fair trade stuff means they are just following the bare minimum law not doing anything special.

We live in a fast paced global economy. We have not achieved that and continue to achieve that without exploiting vulnerable members of society, not just animals.

Yes, something needs to be done and there needs to be stricter laws to protect the rights of both humans and animals. At the same time, there's no escaping it, every product you have was made from exploiting someone. Just do research on outsourcing. It's a bit silly to say that eating meat is bad, while enjoying a piece of chocolate or a cup of coffee (or tea even!) that was brought to you from the sweat of child slaves.

Unless you home grow your own vegetables, weave your own fabric, sew your own clothes, or fairly hire people to do it for you, you are just as hypocritical as any meat eater.

That aside, there is no comparison between deliberately torturing an animal by lighting it on fire, shaving it, trying to drown it, and then tossing it out a window while it's still alive and a factory assembly line. People that eat meat aren't sadistic and cruel by default, people that torture animals are.

There's an entirely different mentality between a factory worker and a drunk that finds it funny to hurt another living creature. One is a possible danger to society and other people, while the other is not. The two are not even comparable.

you have the IQ of a radish. Your brain is a wonderful organ, please use it.

Could I steal that, please?

fizzymittens · 04/10/2014 18:38

They should have been locked up. Sadistic cunts.

itsbetterthanabox · 04/10/2014 18:39

That's so ridiculous when people use that argument.
So unless we can do everything 100% ethically don't bother doing anything right? It's about harm reduction. Making choices to do what you can to be a better person and make a more positive impact.
Anyway going out an campaigning against horrible laws that exploit people can cause change and the aim over time is for them to stop.
But even so that's no justification for killing animals. We can work towards making life better for all people AND not kill animals. They aren't either/or... In fact they aren't related.

itsbetterthanabox · 04/10/2014 18:40

So you think the only reason people are prosecuted for animal torture is because they might hurt a human too? I don't think that is the reason.

fizzymittens · 04/10/2014 18:52

Did anyone actually say that? It is a fact though and there is nothing wrong with pointing it out surely?
