AIBU to phone and chase up interview?

I had an interview for a job 2 weeks ago. On the day I was absolutely full of a cold but didn't want to cancel so I topped myself with every cold/flu medication known to man, which did manage to stop the runny nose etc but unfortunately gave me a very 'wooly' head and I really didn't feel I managed to give my best. Anyway, the lady did warn me I was the first person they had seen so it would probably be a couple of weeks before I heard anything but I have just received an email alert from a job website showing the the job has been re-listed with a new job title. I'm sitting here wondering if I should phone or email the HR lady who organised my interview and ask if there is any feedback yet, even explain to her that I am kicking myself for not being able to give my best on the day. I really really want this job and know I would be perfect for it!!!! Oh wise women of mumsnet what should I do? Sit tight, phone or email?....

If you have seen it relisted, then I'm sure that they decided against you. Not sure that explaining the situation to the hr lady would make a difference.

It's not looking good is it Sad

I dont see there's any harm in chasing it up

jeee · 02/10/2014 11:36

This is definitely a time to thing 'what's the worst that could happen?' If you chase them, the chances are they'll tell you that they're not interested in you. But at least you'd know where you stand, and you'll maybe have a chance to explain why you didn't show yourself to your best advantage.

jeee · 02/10/2014 11:37

... time to think, not time to thing, obviously.

MeDented · 02/10/2014 11:38

That's kind of what I'm thinking Jeee - I'm more likely to regret not trying and wondering what if..... Can anybody help me word the email!

Get on the Phone ............If your not on the phone you are not in the game

jeee · 02/10/2014 11:41

I'd phone*. There's a better chance of you being able to explain about underperforming in the interview without sounding as though you're just making excuses.

  • Actually, I probably wouldn't phone. Or email. But that's because I'm a coward.
MrsPiggie · 02/10/2014 11:45

I wouldn't explain anything to them concerning your health etc. It's worth chasing up and asking if you have been rejected so that you can concentrate on your job hunting (I hate companies that don't inform you of a rejection once they've interviewed you). I would also ask if the job you saw advertised is the same one you have already interviewed for (it may be that a second similar but not quite the same position has become available), and if not if they would consider an application from you. But I'm afraid it's not looking good...
Oh, and I would hold any conversation via email. Good luck, I hope things work out for you.

MeDented · 02/10/2014 11:45

Thanks Sharon!

Ooooh conflicting advice! Part of me thinks email might be better as I wouldn't be putting her on the spot but then I worry that emails are difficult to judge the tone and she might take it the wrong way.

I would leave it. Assume you didn't get this one and move on.

they're really not going to be interested in how much cough mixture you took the day of your interview.

jeee · 02/10/2014 11:52

Ultimately, it probably doesn't matter if you phone or email. But I think you should do one or the other, just so that you know and can move on. You could just do it under the guise of seeking interview feedback?

Hope you see another job that's ideal for you very soon.

everybodysang · 02/10/2014 11:58

It depends. Is it a large company? If you can call the HR person, then yes, do call them. If not, email.

I've been recruiting recently but we don't really have an HR department so those I've interviewed would have to call me directly and I would hate to be chased by phone - but I wouldn't mind an email.

MrsPiggie · 02/10/2014 11:58

If the person you want to talk to is the decision maker/guy who interviewed you then it's OK to call. But if it's an HR person there's no point in calling, they won't know why you've been rejected. All they can tell you is that you have or not been rejected and if the job is the same one. If you email they can forward the email to the person in charge, they can have a think and get an answer back to you. I prefer email because it doesn't put the other person on the spot to give an answer.

flowery · 02/10/2014 12:14

Did they say they would definitely get back to you?
Are you certain it's the exact same job, given it's a different job title?

The fact that you weren't feeling well isn't going to mean a lot to the HR person who organised the interview.

If you have the contact details of the manager recruiting the role, then you could drop them an email. I wouldn't put them on the spot with a phone call, although if you wanted to contact HR, I would advise a phone call. They wouldn't be on the spot in the same way, not being the decision makers, but are more likely to do something as a result of a phone call than an email.

wifeandstepmum · 02/10/2014 12:14

I work in hr and think either an email or phone call is fine. I personally prefer emails.... Don't over think it or over explain. Just say you came in for an interview for x job on x date and wondered if it was possible to get feedback? Keep it simple.

MeDented · 02/10/2014 12:34

ok I phoned! It is the same job and they are still interviewing. I think I'll live with myself better having made the call rather than wishing I had - i think!! At worst I look desperate, hopefully they'll see it as keen! Anyway it's done now so what will be will be, fingers crossed I didn't just blow it!!
