Grr.

I have to car share (work.)

Im fed up of people lighting up. It isn't fair as I don't smoke and I don't want my uniform smelling like smoke, and breathe in other people's fumes.

Oh and loud music and driving like loons as well not fun.

I know Im not bu. Just ranting lol.

Why do you have to car share?

Rainbunny · 01/10/2014 17:51

I would hate that, I would seriously try any other way to get to work over that.

MrsTerryPratchett · 01/10/2014 17:51

Do you have to share as in, it's part of your job, or to get to work?

LEMmingaround · 01/10/2014 17:52

I couldn't cope with any if that.

markhammax · 01/10/2014 17:52

It's part of my job - DEFINITELY the worst part!

LineRunner · 01/10/2014 17:53

I wouldn't car share with smoking raptastic loons, tbh. Not at my age.

PiperIsOrange · 01/10/2014 17:53

If it is a work car then it's illegal to smoke in.

Private cars, then the law don't protect it.

widdle · 01/10/2014 17:53

Why do you have to car share?

Their car, their rules hun Grin

LineRunner · 01/10/2014 17:53

If it's for work they shouldn't be smoking.

Lucyccfc · 01/10/2014 17:54

If you are choosing to car share with so done who you know is a smoker and you are in their car then yabu.

However, if you have to car share (company policy) then your company has a duty of care and should make sure you are not put in that position.

Not so done - I mean someone (bloody IPad)

markhammax · 01/10/2014 17:57

The thing is officially they shouldn't be smoking but in practice everybody does. It's so annoying. There's no real way around it as even if I complained about every smoker they'd get told don't smoke. But they still would!

Are you a carer?

I think that can be a bit of a gray area depending on how you're paid. If you don't get paid between visits then I don't think it counts as a place of work. Although it's been used for business reasons so I reckon it's arguable either way.

If you are being paid for the time spent in the car complain and use the legislation to back you up. If you're not it'd be interesting to see if they can claim mileage - if they can then I think it's a good argument to use to argue that it's work and you should not only have a smoke free environment but you should be paid for travel time too. It's either work or it's not.

WooWooOwl · 01/10/2014 17:59

I agree it's rude, and I'm a smoker. But, I would smoke in my own car if I was doing the driving on a long journey and I'd keep it to a minimum. If I could tell the person really didn't like it then is stop to smoke at services.

markhammax · 01/10/2014 18:00

Yeah I'm a carer

OP posts:
widdle · 01/10/2014 18:00

Ahhhh - get it now - I thought you were getting a lift to work.

YANBU

AdamLambsbreath · 01/10/2014 18:04

The fact that it's their car doesn't make a difference to whether it's rude or not. If I invited someone over to my house, played loud heavy metal during dinner because I liked it and then filled the room with a smoky fug, I'd be inconsiderate. My guests might have to tolerate it, because it was my house, but they'd think I was rude and rightly so.

It's a small enclosed space, and I'm guessing the journey's not so long they have to have a fag. They could just have one before or after.

YANBU.

markhammax · 01/10/2014 18:04

Tbh if it was a lift id take the bus!

OP posts:
markhammax · 01/10/2014 18:30

Adam the problem is we are in the car most of the day so hard if you do smoke but obviously I doubt and it's horrible

Scholes34 · 01/10/2014 19:20

Or I'd get a bike. What is the impact on the people being cared for? Can they object to a smelly carer?

ClapHandsIfYouBelieveInFatties · 01/10/2014 19:22

OP would not make all her calls on time using public transport. My Mum does the same job and it's TIGHT.

WD41 · 01/10/2014 19:29

Yes it's rude and I say that as a smoker. If I'm in the company of non smokers and want a fag I always move away so I'm not subjecting them - wouldn't dream if lighting up in an enclosed space, my car or otherwise.

WD41 · 01/10/2014 19:30

Of not if

rembrandtsrockchick · 01/10/2014 19:34

I do not smoke any more and do not allow others to smoke in my car but if I did I would not accept that a person I was giving a lift to had any right to tell me not to smoke in my own car. Maybe you should use your car to get to work.
