to think the planet isn't worth hair this flat?

So today, for the first time, I cycled the 4 miles to work. You know, trying not to fuck up the planet and everything.

The problem is, my thighs hurt, I was overtaken on a hill by an old man walking with a stick, I arrived at a meeting with panda eyes and my trousers tucked into my (Rudolph) socks, and - worst of all - my hair looks like a 1980s Playmobil pirate.

AIBU to think the planet just isn't worth this?

you jump on a Boris bike, Idont. Though they should really be called Ken bikes, but that's not so alliterative.

Bad hair is the biggest drag about cycling. I have curly hair, but not springy curly hair, so when I take my helmet of I have flattened hair on top and curly hair underneath - bit like Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter. Not a look I can carry off.

Take a small backpack with a change of clothes and makeup?

This said I regularly cycled or even ran to work in Scotland regardless of weather as I could shower and change when I arrived. Here it's much hotter and no showers, some of the men still cycle and change in the loos when they arrive, no women I know though. I tried a few times but unless I've arrived by 7.30am it's just unpleasantly sticky without a proper shower even after changing and brushing hair.

So I'm really suggesting you do as I say, not as I do!

Yanbu, I cycled to work 10 years ago 1st day back from maternity, managed to fall off trying to avoid a bus which was no where near me Blush and knackered my left knee. A week later it was still agony - the GP said it was bursitis and would take along time to heal- its still not better. I've not got on a bike since!

IrianofWay · 01/10/2014 11:21

Take a hair brush and do your make-up at work.

And those sore thighs will soon be firm and lovely!

KittiesInsane · 01/10/2014 11:22

DD would sympathise, OP. I am the World's Worst Mother for making her cycle to school twice this week (also around 4 miles) and arrive all hot and helmet-haired.

neiljames77 · 01/10/2014 11:28

I'd rather you didn't save the planet to be honest. If the sea levels rise, then I'll be living on the coast.

ifyourehoppyandyouknowit · 01/10/2014 11:29

Baby wipes, do make up at work. No real advice about helmet hair, as I can tie mine back. I haven't quite got up to cycling to work yet as it's 6.5 miles each way, and really really hilly.

OK, I had to Google 'Playmobile Pirate'

Oohhhhhhhhhhhhh that is not a good look.

Pixie crop 'n' wax maybe ?

My sister was telling me about this before, I would consider cycling if they started selling these

lylasmam2012 · 01/10/2014 13:12

selling them cheaper I mean

ifyourehoppyandyouknowit · 01/10/2014 13:18

Oooh, I'd buy one of those if it didn't cost about 10 x what I paid for my bike.

ithoughtofitfirst · 01/10/2014 13:18

Can you wear your hair in french plaits or something kind of going in to a low bun?

FruitBasedDrinkForALady · 01/10/2014 13:29

Would a spritz of dry shampoo on arrival help perk up your tresses?

Shockers · 01/10/2014 16:29

It's making me thinner infinity! I got a new bike on Cyclescheme and I love it. It takes 3 minutes if I go straight there/back, but can take 2 hours if I go home by the scenic route.

I don't get helmet hair though cause it's long and straight, so I'm little help on that score.

2madboys · 02/10/2014 09:10

Did you cycle today op? Lovely day for it Wink

ThatBloodyWoman · 02/10/2014 09:13

Ditch the make up,get dreads, and embrace your inner hippy.

ThatBloodyWoman · 02/10/2014 09:16

I'm planning to get one of these.

Cycling, unless a leisure activity featuring Sunday lunch at a country pub, sucks.

Trewfact.

TSSDNCOP · 02/10/2014 09:24

That Swedish invention is awesome but if I had one you can count it'd go off unexpectedly. It looks as though one has a large molar on ones head. Not cool.

Ledkr · 02/10/2014 09:26

I used to cycle up a massive hill to school to collect the chikdren. I used to stop just before school to compose myself and allow my purple glistening face to subside and my panting to die down before I faced the yummy mummy's at the gate.

ThatBloodyWoman · 02/10/2014 09:31

Or try this, then you needn't worry with your hair -just keep it on!

I cycle to yoga.

How right on is that......

Benefits of cycling: good exercise, leaves you feeling awake and refreshed, able to eat more indulgently, the joy of sailing past traffic queues looking smug, generally a less stressed out commute, plus you save petrol money (and the planet).

If you find your journey a little long to start with, do one drive to work with your bike in the back (can usually be managed even in a wee car - jam the front wheel behind the passenger seat, with the seat pushed fully forward). After that you then cycle home, sleep, cycle in, drive home, sleep, drive in, cycle home etc.
