baby behind counter

Went to my local Chinese takeaway last night about 10pm and the owner had their baby (I'd say she was about 9 or 10 months old) in q high chair in the middle of the area behind the counter. Its a fairly large area where chips are fried and hot food is passed etc. Is it just me or is this a massive breach in health and safetY? I'm not going to report it but I was shocked

No different to a kitchen at home.

My local Chinese takeaway often has children around. No childcare that time of the evening.

Annunziata · 30/09/2014 19:22

It's fine. My children were brought up in our shop!

DS used to have his bath in the sink Grin now H&S would have problems with that, but if the wee one is safely out of harm's way, no problem.

LumpenproletariatAndProud · 30/09/2014 19:25

Take always always have kids around, I like that. Family business through and through. Grin

JennyOnTheBlocks · 30/09/2014 19:26

eating that late at night makes you angsty Wink

WorraLiberty · 30/09/2014 19:26

Unless you see them tossing the baby around in a hot wok, I'm sure it'll be fine.

Stratter5 · 30/09/2014 19:27

One of the local Indian restaurants regularly has the owners' small kids playing in it. Doesn't bother me in the slightest, they're lovely, polite children, and there's something quite charming, yet surreal, about eating there whilst they play with their Barbie house.

Bowlersarm · 30/09/2014 19:28

I think it's fine too. Not sure about health and safety, but sounds a lovely family business

carabos · 30/09/2014 20:21

There's a dog behind the counter in our local post office. It barks every time someone comes up to be served. IMO that's much worse than a baby in a takeaway.

TattyDevine · 30/09/2014 20:33

As parents they are most likely able to look after their own children as they see fit without a government advisor telling them what to do.

Just like you probably are! Grin

splendide · 30/09/2014 20:38

Our local take away always has kids in it, they're adorable. One little boy toddled round the counter and hugged leg and then kissed me on the knee. I nearly died of cute.

Mrsjayy · 30/09/2014 20:47

I did really lol at unless you see themg tossing baby around in a hot wok

NoTedInTheBed · 30/09/2014 20:52

DH always tells the tale of the time he was on our local Chinese takeaway, and the toddler that the server was wearing on her back was stirring the curry sauce Shock Grin
I'm never quite sure if I believe him or not, although I do know they always wore their babies when they were there Grin

NoTedInTheBed · 30/09/2014 20:53

Omg splendide, too cute!

Gileswithachainsaw · 30/09/2014 20:56

Well if people like you didn't buy food so late they wouldn't need to be open would they GrinWink

Kids could be in bed then

specialsubject · 30/09/2014 21:14

civilised time to eat IMHO.

I thought this was about 'special deals' on babies for a cheap price... and then I had my tea.

deakymom · 30/09/2014 21:30

i went into a corner shop one day and there was a german shepherd dog with its front paws on the counter looking at me with a yes can i help you expression on his face i was Confused i had just finished a 12 hour shift and thought i was hallucinating Grin

Gileswithachainsaw · 30/09/2014 21:32

That's hilarious Grin

SistersOfPercy · 30/09/2014 22:22

Our local Chinese has a brilliant little thing in it, she's about seven and runs the till. The impressive thing is she can work out the change without looking.
Beautiful bright little spark she is and she always makes me smile.

KissMyFatArse · 30/09/2014 23:16

Bulbasaur · 30/09/2014 23:21

We have a filipino restaurant that has a child that waits on us occasionally. He does a fantastic job, and uses the tips to as fun money. I think it's a great way to teach children responsibility and the value of money.

Nothing wrong with including the whole family in the family business.

ouryve · 30/09/2014 23:23

I suppose the baby could be left unsupervised upstairs.

ChippingInLatteLover · 30/09/2014 23:24

Unless you see them tossing the baby around in a hot wok, I'm sure it'll be fine Grin

The place I go to for the occasional pedicure has a little girl of about 7 doing the till, generally appearing to run the place Grin I do wish they wouldn't let her wear the heels though

mymatemax · 30/09/2014 23:34

OMG, A baby in a highchair, in a kitchen with its parents.. OMG I'm calling Esther!
FFS, Completely harmless!

MidniteScribbler · 01/10/2014 01:02

I can't ever imagine thinking anything about it, or needing to start a thread about it. My parents ran a business and I grew up doing my homework sitting on the sidelines for all of my childhood. Didn't damage me at all, and I grew up with a much broader appreciation of the necessities of life for working families than some people have.

CaoNiMa · 01/10/2014 01:23

This sort of miserable attitude is what has contributed to turning Britain from a warm, community-focused place into a sterile, jobsworth-y one.
