To ask how much your household take-home pay is if you live in Bristol?

Just that really - we're thinking of a move back to the UK from Spain - I'm British, DH is Spanish. I've lived in Spain all my adult life so have absolutely no clue of how much things cost, what's considered a decent wage, etc. I'm self-employed with my own internet business and take home about GBP2.5K a month after tax, DH would be unemployed until he found something there, so I'm trying to work out if my wage is sufficient to live in a decent area, 3 bed house, pay nursery fees and live... So, if you live in Bristol in a nice part of town, what's your take-home pay?

I reckon £4-£6k take home for a working couple (certainly amongst my neighbours). I've just left Bristol for rural Somerset - it is a very lovely City

VelvetEmbers · 29/09/2014 13:38

We live in a not particularly nice area of Bristol with joint take home of £3 - 3.5K. We struggle.
Nursery is £48 - £56 per day depending where you go and age of child. Traffic is ghastly and a 10 min journey can take an hour. But it is a nice place to live.

Paraibalove · 29/09/2014 13:38

2.5k would not cover childcare fees and a 3 bed in a nice area of Bristol (and by nice I mean Bishopston, Redland, glos road way, Clifton, Westbury on trym etc) for a 3 bed you are most certainly looking at about 1200+pm in rent.
depending on how much your childcare fees are it could be tight for you.

Heels99 · 29/09/2014 13:41

I think you would struggle as half your salary would go on rent. But presumably you wouldn't have nursery costs if your dh was unemployed?

knowler · 29/09/2014 13:55

Bristol's great but can be pricey. House prices in areas that are generally considered 'nice' eg westbury on trym can be very high (400k plus for 3-4 bedrooms) and difficult to get into nearby schools.

However if you think more broadly about 'nice' areas - bedminster, Knowle, totterdown - you will get a lot more for your money. 2.5k will still be stretching it tho with nursery fees and having much left over.

knowler · 29/09/2014 13:56

Sorry, didn't answer your question!! Our joint take home pay is 6k ish per month after tax.

ElephantMug · 29/09/2014 14:03

We are in Brislington, so not that nice, mortgage £750 /month, take-home about 3K. We do not feel poor but don't pay childcare out of that. Couldn't really afford to live anywhere "nicer".

canweseethebunnies · 29/09/2014 14:04

I think it really depends what you mean by a 'nice' part of town! Even the not-so-nice but central and trendy parts are quite expensive property wise. I am from Bristol, but part of the reason I haven't really considered moving back since I had my dd is that to afford the same sized property in bristol as I do were I am now, I'd have to live in the back end of nowhere.

Lovely city though!

Paraibalove · 29/09/2014 15:03

Fwiw I live 45 mins from city centre. .have a big house in a nice area and regularly travel into the city no problem several times a week to enjoy it. so perhaps think a bit futher afield?

Paraibalove · 29/09/2014 15:04

(take home about 3 k pm. 4k when I work ft)

expants · 29/09/2014 15:18

Ooh, Paraibalove, where do you live?

Total household income inc tax credits etc just under £2.5k we have a mortage on a lovely 3 bed property in the Whitchurch area of Bristol. Very nice area to live, lovely parks and great facilities. We don't have any childcare costs, comfortable standard of living.

gruffalostance · 29/09/2014 17:01

OP, do you mean nice as in:

A - tree lined streets, houses in excellent condition with beautiful gardens, shiny new cars frequent, old bangers virtually non-existent, many residents may consider private schools for their kids.

or

B - houses are in good condition (with the occasional scruffy one) but not necessarily as large and lovely as the above, often have ok sized gardens, some shiny new cars but old ones equally common, nice community feel, feels safe for kids and not rowdy at night, most residents would not consider private schools as they couldn't afford it.

My perception of nice in Bristol is that Clifton, Westbury on Trym, Redland etc fall into category A. Totterdown, Redfield, Horfield, St Werburghs and the like fall into category B.

My minimum standard for "nice area" is "I don't have to worry about meeting a drug dealer or prostitute on every corner, there aren't regular fights outside local pubs, I don't feel intimidated walking home at night and I don't think anything of popping out to the corner shop at 9pm for a pint of milk". Both the above meet that, but there's a fairly big difference in your monthly rental!

FWIW, we managed on similar take home to what you're anticipating during mat leave (obvs no nursery fees then) while living in a B area, and we could probably manage with one of us at home (and thus able to cut out nursery fees and shop a bit more cheaply/cook more at home etc). But it would be tight. We don't have a 3 bed, but checked Rightmove and there are 3 beds for the same cost as our monthly mortgage (about 900 pcm) in Horfield, for example. Our monthly take home is about £4k and we are pretty comfortable on that (with nursery fees + mortgage and small commuting costs). Can eat out, save, don't have to worry about every penny.

Rockingthestocking · 29/09/2014 17:13

Hi op. Our take home is approx £3.5k. We have a mortgage on a 3 bed house in Bedminster. I would say it fits into gruffalos B category in the above post, but only just! Bristol is a fabulous city to live and in order for us to benefit from everything the city has to offer then we cut back on fab holidays and brand new cars. I guess you need to work out what is important for your family amd start there. If you need any insider info onschools or areas feel free to pm me.

expants · 29/09/2014 18:07

gruffalostance good point. My definition of "nice" is definitely category B! I don't think we'd fit in in category A places, plus I like places to be a little bit rough around the edges (but without the drugs, crime, shootings etc of the last place I lived in the UK - inner-city Nottingham Shock)

OP posts:
expants · 29/09/2014 18:09

We're not big on material things - we currently drive a banger that may or may not be held together with gaffer tape in several strategic places - but we do like to have disposable income to go out for brunch or to go to museums and the theatre. I cook everything from scratch (because here in Spain there is literally no choice - you can't buy readymeals in supermarkets) so I suppose that's a saving too.

OMGtwins · 29/09/2014 19:30

2.5 k is doable but pushing it. It's close to our income and we live 2.5 miles north of city centre in a category b area in a 3 bed house with 2 babies and only I work.

Taystee · 29/09/2014 19:39

Our take home is £3k and we live in an area that I consider nice, though not Clifton nice! Our mortgage is small though and we have no commuting costs as walk to work. It's a pretty nice lifestyle here in Bristol. There are tonnes of Spanish people around too.

ScrambledEggAndToast · 29/09/2014 19:43

£1300pcm. Just about to go up to £1550/£1600pcm.

ScrambledEggAndToast · 29/09/2014 19:44

That's just me, don't live with partner yet and I live in Bedminster with DS.

Figster · 29/09/2014 19:49

Do you need to live in the city? What about the outskirts? Bradley Stoke? Downend? Not that they that much cheaper these days

Emz449 · 29/09/2014 19:51

i earn 1400 after tax, other half is a student but works part time and earns about 700-800ish a month, we live in clifton down area in a lovely flat, 660 pcm and bills about 200 a month, we split this between us, i do find it expensive here, i come from tunbridge wells and was surprised at the difference in council tax, even with the subsidy oh gets because of being a student its more then what i used to pay, however we are living in a popular area of bristol and the station is down the road from us and 15 mins from the centre

magicalmrmistofelees · 29/09/2014 19:51

Our take home pay is around 2.8k (DH's wage, I am currently a SAHM). No nursery fees. Live in a 2 bed house in Clifton. We run one car and struggling a bit financially. Rent is extortionate in the nice parts of Bristol. Nursery fees I think are approx £50 per day.

LizzieMint · 29/09/2014 19:54

I live just outside Bristol in N. Somerset and prices out here are generally much lower than in the city, yet it takes me 10-15 mins to get into the centre or Clifton. We moved out here from Henleaze, I used to work in clifton and it used to take me 2 or 3 times longer to get to work than when we moved, even though Henleaze was a lot closer. Traffic can be crazy!
