Even the Torygraph is mystified. Why are we not kicking the shit out of the thieving wankers that make up our parliament? Or burning down corporate headquarters and lynching the bosses? These bastards are making us poorer and blaming us for it. Angry

Why are people saying that young people are apathetic? I certainly don't see that to be true - I think the way that people protest has changed. It's become a lot more about social media, signing petitions, boycotting things etc. than it has about mass protests in the street.

Look at what happened when our young people protested against the raise in tuition fees - a teeny tiny minority of them got violent, and the whole movement was denounced and the participants were vilified.

Also, it's not as if the cuts/ruining of the NHS/everything else just affects the younger generation - why is it down to them to protest for change? Why isn't everyone revolting against the government/big business?

What DaughterDilemma and Beachykeen said.

Interesting thread - thanks for starting it!

Off to read Telegraph article now - wouldn't have seen it, if not for this thread.

southeastastra · 28/09/2014 21:46

well the london riots a couple of years back were pretty extreme, so it's silly to suggest that no-one gives a stuff.

i think lots of older people just realise that there isn't much you can do to change the status quo and is it really worth it anyway.

southeastastra · 28/09/2014 21:48

seems easier to just silently claim all the benefits going and keep yer head down

GarlicSeptimus · 28/09/2014 21:51

God, I'm feeling SO DEPRESSED by everything I've been reading today! This thread is the chink of light in a wall of gloom - so I'm in! Thanks, OP :)

ModernToss · 28/09/2014 21:58

British people just moan, or decide not to vote at all as they did in numbers in protest at Tony Blair's government and Iraq.

An estimated two million people marched against that war (a million in the UK) - the biggest protest in history - and were completely and utterly ignored. I think that added massively to the sense of futility people feel. We don't have a voice, or not one that's listened to.

Sandthorn · 28/09/2014 22:02

Errr... Maybe because the people who are so disappointed that it hasn't happened yet are sitting round waiting for someone else to do it and complaining on an anonymous Internet forum? Confused

caroldecker · 28/09/2014 22:02

So, what will we do once we have won the revolution?

JudysPriest · 28/09/2014 22:03

You're right Sandthorn, we should not discuss this. We should all know what to do and how to change it. FOR THE HIVE!!!!

GarlicSeptimus · 28/09/2014 22:05

Carol - We could take a few pointers from Iceland. Learn from Scandinavia. Quite a few things we could constructively do!

southeastastra · 28/09/2014 22:10

what do you suggest people do then to start the revolution?

honeysucklejasmine · 28/09/2014 22:14

Good article but I'm more mystified that its in the men's lifestyle part. Perhaps women are too busy buying handbags to care about political corruption.

JudysPriest · 28/09/2014 22:15

First, you must control the media. bellacaledonia.org.uk/2014/09/26/an-independent-media-for-scotland/

JudysPriest · 28/09/2014 22:16

honey Did you see the 'Better Together' ad. Wimmin too busy to think about independence.

FrancesNiadova · 28/09/2014 22:17

Everyone's too busy watching Downturn Shabbey Confused

AdmitYouKnowImRight · 28/09/2014 22:18

Perhaps the majority agree with cuts etc?

primarynoodle · 28/09/2014 22:20

and any young person with a revolutionary view is made to feel patronised and silly by the older generation - they are going through a 'phase' and they will 'grow up' once they have a job and have to provide for their family etc

I.e. become part of the system

its a neverending circle

beavington · 28/09/2014 22:22

What were London riots about though? It was just people looting and burning places down that I largely saw in the media. Or was I brainwashed? The feeling I got at time of the riots a few years ago was that we had plenty to riot about but all people were truly arsed about is nicking some new trainers. Sums up what a lot of people I know are like if you exchange trainers for another overpriced commodity that people 'cant live without'

beavington · 28/09/2014 22:27

Agree with primarynoodle. Im not exactly young but my folks thing that I will grow out of my lefty ways one day. They were staunch labour supporters til tony blair got in power.

MexicanSpringtime · 28/09/2014 22:34

It is strange, isn't it? I thought the BBC's indignation of a few people getting het up about the Scottish referendum was hilarious. Independence is usually won by war and it looks like that is the only way it would be won for Scotland, but how dare people get a bit emotional

honeysucklejasmine · 28/09/2014 22:38

Judys yes indeed. How thoughtful of the govmint to dictate speak to us in words we might understand.

honeysucklejasmine · 28/09/2014 22:40

London riots were about the shooting of an unarmed gangsta by the police. The yoof weren't happy so nicked TVs from Argos to get justice.

Coz that's how the law works, innit?!

Dapplegrey · 28/09/2014 22:47

Will people be killed in the revolution?

biscuitsandbandages · 28/09/2014 22:48

Ive marched against tuition fees, the war in iraq and the destruction of the nhs.

Going well so far then......

We are all too bloody tired and keeping our heads down. Quite frankly, since im also muslim I worry about beung seen to be 'stepping out of line' if I speak out of protest against things in my own country (am white british) that I see as unfair or unjust. Sad

meddie · 28/09/2014 23:09

There's too much division. protest requires mass participation to make a differrence and at the moment people are still divided and blaming 'others' for their situation. Its immigration/benefit cheats/fake DLA claimants/single mothers/lazy public sector workers *delete whichever is the current one in vogue.
in the mean time the media seems more intent on providing updates on the sizr of kim kardashians arse than much real news. its bread and circuses.
Give the plebs the bare minimum and amuse them with trivia and their eyes are kept off the real issues that are keeping them scraping along the bottom.
Couple with a distinct lack of knowlefge or education on politics andmost people feel they have no real voice or dont understand how their vote would count
