So, I've had terrible luck with employment recently, I have a new job which I absolutely hate! & am asking if I'm being U to quit? And if so, please can I have a kick up the ass? I would love your opinion on the situation!

the pay is abysmal, I'm not getting my shift allowance, as it's not been set up properly & with Emergency tax I'm going to be working full time 38.5 hours for around £700 & my nursery costs are more anyway!

I'm on my feet all day, the conditions arnt very nice & the shifts I'm not too keen on. I really do not like the job at all!

None of this was explained in the job description or at the interview!

So after moaning to my friend & asking for her opinion, she has told me, I'm expecting too much from a job and I'm not likely to ever be paid more than minimum wage! (Which, would be fine however I would like to earn the correct amount for full time work)

With the Festive season approaching, I obviously need the money. I do have some savings but It's not loads, so wouldn't last long!

I have been applying for other jobs, but am not getting very far!

So, please share your thoughts & give me a kick up the ass!

How quickly will they be able to rectify your pay ?

PumpkinBones · 28/09/2014 16:13

Just keep applying for other jobs, I think it is ironically easier to find a job when you already have one!

amyhamster · 28/09/2014 16:13

is it retail?

I'd try to stick at it until you find something else tbh otherwise your cv will look all over the place & you won't get a reference

KateSpade · 28/09/2014 16:16

I have asked about the pay a couple if times but all I've had is 'i don't know, I'll ask' & had nothing back! Confused

Next time you are in, ask very firmly for the telephone number of payroll or whoever does the salaries. Just say "I really must get it sorted - I'll speak to them." FIRM!!

KateSpade · 28/09/2014 16:55

I will, it does need to get sorted, well this whole thing does!

I think I might be a bit depressed & this just isn't helping, but I feel so lost/stuck.

Do you think your friend may be right? I have a relative in a similar situation although she turned the job down when she realised the wage and reality of doing the work. But to be frank she isn't qualified for anything and won't get anything better without sucking it up for a while and gaining some kind of a track record in regular employment. It infuriated me that she felt herself too good for the job, when her family is in financial peril and 'borrowing' off others (not too good for that!). Obviously you're not quite in such urgent need but realistically - if you quit what are the chances of you getting anything better without more experience / training? Are there any prospects related to the role? If you put up with it and got a good reputation over the next six months say, would you be in a better situation to get more pay either there or elsewhere? The tax thing will be sorted so I think that's a short term way to look at things. Try to be more strategic. And being out of work can be depressing too. Is there no satisfaction to be had from the role whatsoever? I'd give it longer and keep applying for other stuff unless your friend is very wide of the mark for some reason.

KateSpade · 28/09/2014 20:06

I have recently finished university pink and I did 18 months of work experience, I am in no way saying I am too good for the role at all. I am saying I don't get any satisfaction from it at all, it'd still be the same if the money was better.

I understand that you have to start at the bottom and hard work, ect I really do, that's why I did so much work experience.

Their are no prospects related to the job what so ever, either.

I am there for the money, even though rubbish.

Seriously, you need to be persistent to get the pay sorted. Don't forget once the tax is sorted and pay things will be much better.

Don't quit unless you've got something else

TeracottaTurtle · 28/09/2014 20:38

Just phone HMRC yourself.

Dh started a new job in May, and every month his wages were about £240 down due to the wrong tax code.

He's been faffing about asking his manager and hr for months with no joy. A fortnight ago he called HMRC, they took a few details and went 'Oh yes, we have you on the wrong tax code. Hang on...there we are, that's been changed'.

He was paid two days ago and had a full rebate of over £1000, only ten days after he called HMRC. Sorted just like that.

notagainffffffffs · 28/09/2014 20:43

Yeppers to hmrc. Much quicker. Retail is a generally shitty job (from experience) but is much better once youve made a few friends and start having a giggle. Stick with it

KateSpade · 28/09/2014 20:55

I wasn't aware you could sort it like that, turtle I will ring them tomorrow! Thanks for the info.

I should have said it isn't retail, it's in a factory. Although I did work in retail for years & years whilst I was at Uni, I understand what you mean not

TeracottaTurtle · 28/09/2014 22:22

Neither did we Kate! We thought it was going to be a PITA and HMRC would refer him back to his employer, or want him to fill in a load of forms and dance through various hoops...but it was so easy, he's been kicking himself he didn't phone them straight away. Although actually, we have managed with the lower wages and an unexpected 'bonus' is rather nice Smile

KateSpade · 29/09/2014 09:17

Well, I'm glad it was a good outcome & I suppose it'll be similar for me, I will eventually get the money back if it doesn't get sorted! Almost like I'm putting the money away!
