I just realised my vegetable stock cubes aren't actualky suitable for vegetarians Confused.

I made a risotto with them last week and FIL had some. Should I tell him or keep quiet?

I thought you had given him actual meat and was wondering how you did that accidentally. But a stock cube, a week ago...no way would I confess!

IndiaKnightGarden · 26/09/2014 20:13

They were the Knorr ones - apparently they contain beef!

Keep quiet.

It would never have occurred to me that I'd need to check whether vegetable stock cubes had meat in Shock.

nikki1978 · 26/09/2014 20:22

I once made some veggie soup out of leftovers from xmas day. I fed it to my mum forgetting I had stuck some of the beef in there too. She has been a veggie for 25 years. Oops! She liked the soup and didn't realise. I have never breathed a word of it ;)

BeenThereGotTheTShirt · 26/09/2014 20:22

Just looked on the Knorr website - the veg stock cubes say they are suitable for vegetarians.

readysteady · 26/09/2014 20:26

I think the op gave them normal stock cubes by mistake

phantomnamechanger · 26/09/2014 20:35

i have knorr ones, they state suitable and list no beef Confused

Scholes34 · 26/09/2014 20:45

A genuine mistake. No need to own up. Buy a tin of Swiss Marigold vegetable stock! (Just checked my tin to make absolutely sure it's suitable for vegetarians - it would never have crossed my mind that it might not be. Fortunately it is!)

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 26/09/2014 20:53

Long term vegetarian - unless it was done with malicious intent I wouldn't worry .

MIL , I'm looking at you with your pepperoni pizza "I thought it was peppers"
No it's sliced sausage (and very obvious)
or the chicken soup "It's only a BIT of chicken"

She's trying to kill me most people who meet me try to kill me TBH

DanyStormborn · 26/09/2014 20:57

Don't tell him - if it was me I'd rather not know. I'm not a vegetarian but I wouldn't want to eat vegetable stock cubes with meat in.

EhricLovesTheBhrothers · 26/09/2014 20:59

Vegetable stock cubes contain beef? I don't think so. All vegetable stock cubes are vegetarian.

IndiaKnightGarden · 26/09/2014 21:00

The stockpot ones?

FIL to DD "why won't you eat your Grandmother's roast chicken?".
DD "because I'm a vegetarian Papa".
FIL " but it's corn fed!".

Don't breathe a word OP.

I (well, dh) once gave a veggie friend of ours a spag bol made with meat by mistake.

She was coming over for dinner and dh offered to cook, which he did before I got home from work.

I'd bought quorn mince especially so told dh that morning that she was a veggie, there was quorn in the freezer so use that (we'd never had it before). Made sure my friend knew it was quorn on our way over - we work together, so left work and went straight back to mine.

Anyway, the three of us sat down to dinner, all was well, we all cleared our plates. At the end of the meal I said to dh 'Well that didn't really taste any different! I think we'll have quorn again' and a strange, panic stricken, fixed smile appeared on his face.

We never told her. I didn't really see the point once the deed was done.

Vegetarian

blacktreaclecat · 26/09/2014 21:06

No. I fed my veggie boss my MILs homemade apple pie. Her pastry is delicious. I've since discovered it is so good because she uses half butter, half lard. Oops

LalyRawr · 26/09/2014 21:08

Knorr Vegetable Stock Pots are suitable for vegetarians. All vegetable ones are.

What got me {years ago mind, so may have changed} but Walkers Salt and Vinegar crisps were not suitable for veggies, but Roast Chicken ones were.

Now, I know it's not actual roast chicken, but come on! To have no meat derivative in at all?!

ChippingInLatteLover · 26/09/2014 21:13

Laly there's loads of stuff like that. Frazzles for one Grin

OP - do you have the original packet?

starfishmummy · 26/09/2014 21:25

A few years ago the office vegetarian tucked into a cheese aand tomato pizza I had made. It had a scone base made with lard. Oops, I didn't mention it and in my defence I had never said that it was vegetarian!

londonrach · 26/09/2014 21:29

Keep quiet. Take jt go your grave. Grans friends were veggie to the day they died. My dad found out 20 years ago their marg had animal fat. We kept it quiet as a family as why upset them.

IndiaKnightGarden · 26/09/2014 21:31

Knorr Vegetable Stock Pots are suitable for vegetarians.

Oh phew. My vegetarian friend told me today that they weren't.

Stand down everyone!

Or, keep your meat/veggie disaster tales coming - I'm really enjoying them!

OP posts:
EhricLovesTheBhrothers · 26/09/2014 21:32

It's not salt and vinegar crisps that weren't suitable, it's cheese and onion due to the rennet in cheese powder.

They are suitable for vegetarians.

I would keep quiet though.

I was shocked to find out that a magnum isn't vegetarian, but a beef and tomato Pot Noodle is.

Blew my mind.
