To think we're never getting a house.

We live in a flat in a not great area and we're on our local housing list. The thing is I bid on houses every week and when the bidding ends we're usually number 20+ in the list even if when I put the bid in we were number 5.
I just don't think we'll ever win and I'm not sure what to do. Aibu to give up hope or has it actually worked out for anyone?

Well no, you aren't going to get one if you are ending up at number 20 every time. There all be more people joining you in bidding than are getting a property!

A swap or private let might be more promising

rainbowinmyroom · 26/09/2014 13:18

I'd go for a private then. It is doubtful you will get a house with a garden.

Bagpussss · 26/09/2014 13:22

Roobix see if there are any facebook groups set up for exchanges. Have been on the council waiting list for 15 years and still in private rented accommodation Confused

HeySoulSister · 26/09/2014 13:23

You are asking for a 2 bed or 3 bed ( on the swap thread)

You wouldn't be entitled to a 3 bed though

SaucyJack · 26/09/2014 13:24

Well tbh you might as well give up hope on the bidding system. Your flat is accessible, and you only have one child which means you'll never be overcrowded in a two-bed.

Your best bet is to try and swap with someone who wants a wheelchair friendly flat.

I do sympathise a bit as I know it sucks to live in a rough area, but there are plenty of people (if not 99%) who have far greater need of housing than you.

rainbowinmyroom · 26/09/2014 13:25

Everyone wants a three-bed house at affordable rent in a nice area. Fact is they are few and far between. If you can go private, I would because otherwise there is next to no chance of getting a three-bed council house with garden in a nice area.

19lottie82 · 26/09/2014 13:26

OP, I'd give up on being moved up the council list I'm afraid. You have a home and it's not over crowded. You won't get any priority because you don't like the area, sorry.

Roobix04 · 26/09/2014 13:39

I wasn't suggesting my needs were greater then others I just wanted a realistic discussion about my odds. I only want a two bed but yes 3 would have been nice.
I guess private is my only option.

It really is. There are just so many coming homeless and they always trump others on the list.

hoobygalooby · 26/09/2014 13:47

Why is it assumed that the OP is on benefits. Many social housing tenants actually work for a living you know.
OP in your position i would contact your GP, social services and anyone who will listen about your antisocial neighbours. Say the stress of living there is making you ill and ask to be given special consideration- your DP being a witness could work in your favour as you can say you are scared of the repercussions.
I have found that the more noise you make the more likely they are to listen!!

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 26/09/2014 13:47

You can easily break double glazing too tbh, it doesn't mean it's more secure.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 26/09/2014 13:48

Sorry, my post was to roobix.

Roobix04 · 26/09/2014 13:50

We tried the repercussions route at the encouragement of the police officer who took our statement but we were told unless someone actually does something they can't help.

I wouldn't get social services involved. We had top medical banding for a while and still didn't get an offer for months. There are just not a lot of houses with gardens in many areas unless you private rent.

MrsWinnibago · 26/09/2014 14:02

hooby because she stated she is full time carer for her disabled DP. Hmm Why else?
