Just had the latest blood test results for 7yo DS, who is coeliac. FINALLY clear and antibody-free, after two and a half years of eating gluten-free. He had very bad damage at diagnosis, so we knew it would take a while, but I was beginning to worry that we were missing something in his diet.

It has taken huge amounts of work, research, checking, explaining etc. etc. to keep his diet safe everywhere (home, school, activities, friends houses, parties, meals out, holidays, etc. etc.) And today it has all paid off, and I know we have got it 100% right. And he's fit and well and just had a big growth spurt.

I am almost tearful with happiness!

So if anyone wants to join me in a big Wine to celebrate then do! You can keep your horrible gluten-y pints of beer to yourselves though Grin

Wine Lovely news op!

LemonadeRayGun · 26/09/2014 11:20

That is great news. We try and limit gluten here and I know how hard it is - and for us it doesn't really matter if a little sneaks in, so I think you are incredible for eliminating it completely, well done. There's no gluten in wine, right?

nomdemere · 26/09/2014 11:21

Nope, lemonade, wine is fine, as are all pure spirits, even whisky (distillation leaves the gluten behind)! You have to be careful about lemonade, though, oddly, depends on the brand. Safest to stick to the alcohol :)

Fantastic news for you and your DS. Definately Wine to celebrate.

We're 3 months in to a gluten free diet for my DH who's become intolerant in his 40s.

mymummademelistentoshitmusic · 26/09/2014 11:32

Congratulations. And we'll done to you as well. That can't have been easy. Thanks

sparechange · 26/09/2014 11:35

Great news! Wine

cherrybombxo · 26/09/2014 12:16

Absolutely brilliant news, you must be thrilled!

nomdemere · 26/09/2014 12:24

I am really really pleased. It has been a lot of work, which I am more than happy to do - but it felt like I must be somehow not doing well enough when his blood tests were not coming back clear - now I know there is no doubt that I have got it right !

thanks Danger. We had a cloudy lemonade somewhere which had gluten in it! Luckily read the ingredients before DS tried it. Can't remember where it was from, but it surprised me too!

My niece and nephew have huge array of allergys including gluten and they drink schweppes lemonade. You really do have to check everything each time you buy it as the ingredients change. They also have branston beans not Heinz.
You would be amazed what has gluten in. Good luck.

nomdemere · 26/09/2014 13:40

Yes, I think it was barley - it was fizzy lemonade though, not squash, which took me by surprise.

YY to having to be so careful! I never buy meat from the butchers anymore, only pre-packaged meat, since DS was ill from 'gluten-free sausages' from a butchers. I think they used a knife/board to cut them that had had other (gluten-containing) stuff on it.

Congratulations OP. My DIL has just started on the coeliac journey - we're having great fun (not) and blanche at how expensive free-from stuff is Shock

nomdemere · 26/09/2014 13:42

lz - Heinz baked beans are gluten-free (but might have another ingredient that affects your DNs' other allergies, of course). I remember another mum looking rather surprised when she offered to make DS a baked potato with baked beans at her house, and I had to ask her what brand her baked beans were! (and then ask her to put a sheet of silver foil under the potato, and use a new pack of butter etc. etc.!)

Approved food often have gluten free stuff, may be worth looking.

LizLimone · 26/09/2014 13:51

Clink! Raising a glass of elderflower cordial here (coeliac and pregnant Grin ).

It's great that your son is doing well. When I was diagnosed as a teenager, I had pretty bad damage and I remember it taking me about 2 years to really feel better.

nomdemere · 26/09/2014 13:56

mmm, elderflower cordial, yum. A spot of gin in mine, perhaps :)

Congrats on the pregnancy limone!
