AIBU to make DD put school shoes on her Christmas list?

During the summer holidays she talked me into buying Kickers for school - I checked they were allowed and although expensive and rather chunky I agreed she could have them, as I thought they were quite good for a winter shoe and would last.

DD came home today moaning that she hates them, she wishes she had chosen Vans, as everyone else has Vans, and want to go shopping for new school shoes this weekend.

I paid £50 for these shoes and she's expecting me to shell out another £45/50 as she's changed her mind. She thinks I'm being very unreasonable and nasty Shock.

I don't know. 13 is a weird age and small stuff matter. But you paying for it? No way. Depending on previous reliability/responsibility, I might offer to buy them if she still likes and wants them after half term if she pays me the money from her allowance on a weekly basis. So I'd get it now for her, which is probably what she wants, but she'd pay me off and might use some Christmas money from relatives if she gets some. I would be fine with doing that with DSD but DD1 would agree happily and then moan and complain about not getting the full allowance for absolutely ages until it's all paid off and then decide she wants new shoes.

"dd you chose these shoes. If you want a different pair then you pay for them ypurself"

pointythings · 24/09/2014 21:20

MrsWinnibago not all schools specify leather shoes. Mine doesn't. Shoes have to be black, low-heeled, without badges or decorations and if laceups, laces must be black. This means real Vans are out because of the tag, but many children wear mock Vans from Shoe Zone as they are comfy, cheap, practical and in keeping with the rules. Much better than the flimsy brogues and ballerinas that were in fashion recently.

But yes, OP - your DD should have to wait for Christmas or pay for the new shoes herself.

Kelper are Kickers cushioned enough to deal with plantar fasciitis? I ask because the only thing that helped me were FitFlops - they do boots and closed shoes too. What cured my pf in the end was jumping into the shallow end at our local pool (stupid) and reinjuring the same heel quite badly - it seemed to restart the healing process and not only did the new injury mend, the pf went too. I really wouldn't recommend it though...

Yanbu. Designer stuff is a gift, not something to be expected as standard!

Aridane · 24/09/2014 21:25

Don't think she should even be getting them for Christmas! A lesson your DD needs to learn. And one she will learn better if she does not get new shoes 'free' again. She can use Xmas or birthday money if she still really wants them in a few months' time

ElephantsNeverForgive · 24/09/2014 21:25

YANBU
One pair of school shoes per year unless out grown or they fall apart through fair wear and tear. Likewise school bags.

The bank of Mum is not a dedicated follower of fashion.

Which ones are they OP? Will you attach the website

YANBU. It alarms me how materialistic and label obsessed children are! Mine wouldn't take a Tesco carrier bag to school and carried stuff round in a yellow Selfridges paper bag just to show off (until the handle frayed and it was unusable)! You've just bought her perfectly good, expensive shoes and she wants different ones purely to impress her friends. That's a want, not a need, so she should find a way to buy them herself.

kormasutra · 24/09/2014 21:27

Kickers are very much " back in fashion" it would seem:)
11 yr old ds got them for secondary ( slip on ones ) and half of the boys in his class have them.
Teacher made them label insides in case any went missing in pe etc but ds is already a size 10 so I'm sure his won't be going home on the wrong feet:)

Not all of them, fortunately. There's a definite label backlash going on in my DDs' school, at least in the groups my DDs hang out with. Mind you, they aren't in the fashionista set, they're in the studious geek set. Fortunately this constitutes quite a large group of girls and it's quite hard to bully a dozen people at the same time. Smile

Pointythings I have no idea,I'm willing to try anything at this moment!! I have just bought some MTB's on ebay though.
OP, Maybe your DD could have a look on ebay for her Vans, maybe they won't be so expensive? I remember when Vans weren't cool either

pointythings · 24/09/2014 22:39

kelper there's a school of thought that advocates percussion therapy - here they hit the injury (gently) to restart the healing process by aggravating it. I think I accidentally did an extreme form of this. After just over a year of pf, it was an amazing recovery - took 6 weeks from the pool injury to being pain free and I'm still fine 2 years later.

People don't understand the pain of pf until they have been there...

missymayhemsmum · 24/09/2014 23:31

She chose Kickers. She can wear Kickers until they wear out. That's what choosing means.

MyballsareSandy · 25/09/2014 07:50

Thanks all, she's just gone off to get the bus in her kickers, no mention of shoes this morning thankfully. I've told her last night she isn't having vans unless she saves or has them for xmas.

Both kickers and vans are allowed at their school as long as they are leather and plain. Canvas not allowed.

AIBU to make DD put school shoes on her Christmas list?
