To expect this note to have got to me?

Dd1 missed school on Monday. When she returned on Tuesday, another mum told me that a note had been sent out on Monday as there is head lice going around the class. So, I knew to check dd's hair when she returned from school.

I checked; found lice; treated her. However, no note in her bag. If the other mum hadn't told me, who knows when I'd have discovered the lice.

I've emailed the school to say pretty much this, and in spite of her absence, I expect correspondence to get to me.

AIBU? A bit OTT? Or do you think that's okay?

Well, the note should have been in book bag/tray for your dd to take home but sometimes dc forget to take things out of their trays.

But YABU for not checking your dd's hair more often! That is up to you, not the school!! If she had actual lice, then she must have had them for some quite some time. Perhaps your dd got them first and passed them round the class.

jopickles · 24/09/2014 09:26

yabu surely you would have noticed them when brushing her hair which I'm guessing you do everyday anyway or washing it without a note having to be sent

SaucyJack · 24/09/2014 09:26

YANBU generally speaking.

But YABU on that particular one. If you have primary school kids you need to be checking them regularly as a matter of course.

TeenAndTween · 24/09/2014 09:27

YAB a bit U.

In as much as I think most schools struggle to ensure that absent children come home with all necessary notes.

otoh

YANBU because you would think that it should be possible to sort this kind of thing out. Does your school have ParentMail?

mommy2ash · 24/09/2014 09:29

I think it would be good if they held onto notes and they came home in their sacks when they come back.

I think yabu about the head lice though. your child your responsibility. the school don't remind you to feed or clothe your child and I see maintaining their health and hygiene as basic as that. there was a huge problem in my dds class last year and I check her hair daily and she still got them numerous times. if everyone checked as often as I do the problem would have been solved much quicker.

wheresthelight · 24/09/2014 09:33

head lice are vile and you should be checking your child's hair every few days regardless of the school telling you so yabu there

however letters not being forwarded wheb children are absent is a real pet hate of mine especially when 99% of parents have email and social media and the schools could save a bloody fortune of they emailed these notes so they know ot gets to everyone

Floggingmolly · 24/09/2014 09:35

The note will probably have been left in her tray; so your dd is actually the weak link in the chain... You shouldn't need someone else to alert you to the possibility that your child has nits anyway.

redskybynight · 24/09/2014 09:38

agree you should be checking your child's hair regularly anyway!

My DC's school sents a head lice note home every few weeks, I would guess the teachers would NOT see it as top priority to give to children who were missing (would be different if it was something like a letter for a school trip).

Molotov · 24/09/2014 09:52

Ah, okay ... dd is in Y1 so may well have missed the letter in her tray (they've only just started to have that responsibility). I'd forgotten that, so thanks for prompting my memory.

So, I have just phoned school to check this. At present, Y1 are not responsible for the correspondence coming home. So she was missed.

Re the head lice: she is my first baby, so it's a learning curve! I know now to keep an eye on it. I saw flakes on Saturday when brushing her hair but honestly had no idea - I thought I probably hadn't washed the shampoo out properly, as I couldn't see nits. I didn't know how small they are!

I did notice two, tiny brown moving things though, when looking for them yesterday with the nit comb. They've since been zapped.

I doubt it's my dd who had it first and passed it around as I only noticed flakes on Saturday, and I am aware of what her scalp normally looks like.

Nevermind. We learn Smile I shall keep a daily check. Thanks all Smile

There's lice going about my dds class, no note from the teacher to anyone, the only way we found out is because one of the other mums told me that another mum had told her!

CromerSutra · 24/09/2014 10:25

Flipping headlice! We used to have such problems with them a few years ago but fortunately not for a while. I remember being at my parents in France and getting some special shampoo for them, it was fabulous and not too harsh. Got several bottles to take home! Hope they stay away from your Dd now too!

MammaTJ · 24/09/2014 10:37

If I waited for a note instead of checking my DCs hair, I would then be the one the note was about. They are always coming home with the odd one or two in their hair and I am always sorting them out.

You really do have to keep checking, so the note is irrelevant.
