To think that I don't need an Apple Watch

Apparently you feel a pulse on your wrist whenever you get a text / email / twitter alert etc. I assume you can turn it off but it would drive me mental if it was left on. I would never get anything done.

If you don't think you need one, don't get one.

Job done.

FiloFunky · 25/09/2014 16:00

i have a g watch. handy at work can read my texts and noone is any the wiser Grin Grin Grin

browneyedgirl86 · 25/09/2014 16:12

I don't understand the fascination myself. Samsung and Sony already have smart watches out. A friend of mine has one.

skylark2 · 25/09/2014 16:19

I'm bemused that anyone would think it was unreasonable not to buy the latest piece of overpriced overhyped elecronics. Is advertising really that powerful?

For people who want to monitor their heartrate, my heartrate monitor watch cost about a fifth of the expected price. I love Aldi.

ShelaghTurner · 25/09/2014 16:40

Don't you? That's great news because it means I've just jumped one person up in the queue on pre-order day! Because you see, I absolutely need one. Like I need oxygen to breathe. Wink

Betrayedbutsurvived · 25/09/2014 16:48

Yup, I need one. If you don't see the point of them, don't buy one. All the more stock for me when they are released. I've already worked out what our tapping codes will mean with DH Blush

Idontseeanysontarans · 25/09/2014 18:12

Expected to cost around £300 from what I've read, think I'll pass considering I have almost a compulsion to have a long hot bath while wearing any watch I own! Blush

Idontseeanysontarans · 25/09/2014 18:12

I do like though.

borisgudanov · 27/09/2014 11:39

I've gone off iShite now ever since I spent two days trying to upload my music collection from a Linux box to an iPod. iShite devices only work with other iShite devices (or to a limited extend Windoze if you happen to like iTunes). I can't get iShite to work with Linux properly at all whereas Android it's a doddle because it all uses open standards and protocols. If Apple were doing it properly you'd be able to interface an iShite watch with an Android tablet or an Apple Mac with a Samsung smart watch. But you can't, so it's bollocks IMHO.

Oh and anyone who wants to invent new hardware to use with iShite devices has to pay Apple a king's ransom for permission. You can't even get a USB to Apple power adapter without shelling out a pony.

MrsToddsShortcut · 27/09/2014 14:35

No, you/I absolutely don't need an Apple iWatch.

However, I really really really really want oneGrin.

I know it's wrong and that it's just more consumerist tat being sold to us by faceless corporations and part of the evil capitalist plan and that I should just strap a sundial to my wrist, but it's just so pretty...

...and sleek and shiny and techy and neat and just a little bit lovely.

Luckily it would involve a lottery win or Daddy Warbucks adopting me for me to get my hands on one, so I'm safe. Phew! Close shave...

Rainbunny · 27/09/2014 15:22

I'll admit it, I really want an Apple watch and I WILL have one whenever they finally launch them! You can control the settings of course - it doesn't have to buzz to alert you. I had a garmin forerunner that broke and I want a watch that looks less clunky than that so I can wear it in the office as well. I'm particularly excited to get the pedometer function - I nearly bought a fitbit for that but I'm glad I held off for the Apple watch. Plus, I wear dresses and skirts often so there's no room for my phone in a pocket anyway and definitely no room in my (too small but I'm in denial) jeans either! This watch will let me see texts/calls and I can decide whether to get my phone out.

Love it or hate it, I predict that within 3 years every phone will have a watch option and we'll all be wearing them.

Suzannewithaplan · 27/09/2014 17:07

Im not so sure that watches will catch on, apple arent the first to bring one out and the others arent all that popular afaik...still, be interesting to see what happens!

LostInWales · 27/09/2014 17:19

Do you think it will work with the ReSound hearing aids because if it does then I have found my excuse to need one.

Rainbunny · 27/09/2014 17:28

Suzanne - I think it will catch on. Apple has made the watch more attractive and less bulky. It's basically what Apple does best, Apple isn't actually that innovative in developing new things, they take existing tech and make it look sexier than the competition. So far the only other main offering has been the Samsung watch which is spectacularly ugly.

The reason I think these watches will catch on is tied to the fitness aspect - the pedometer function and the heart rate monitor. Fitbit bands and similar wrist devices have become a huge market in the USA (where I live). By combining that function into the watch Apple has made it far more attractive than just a watch that can show you calls and texts.

Suzannewithaplan · 27/09/2014 17:36

The reason I think these watches will catch on is tied to the fitness aspect

thats why I think they wont catch on, the fitness enthusiasts who want to track all their activities are, broadly speaking, a minority (or we'd not have an obesity epidemic) there are other cheaper alternatives in the pipeline if you are looking for an activity monitor with an optical HR sensor.

then again, since no one has yet invented an accurate crystal ball we are both just guessing Wink

Rainbunny · 27/09/2014 18:06

Fair point Suzanne. I must admit I am biased because I know loads of people with fitbits. It's amazing how obsessed they get about reaching their goal "step count" everyday. Many of my friends have lost a slight bit of weight as well, simply because they are aware of how many steps they are taking and they walk extra to meet their step count goal. I thought they were a gimmick at first but I've been impressed and now I want one. The marketing does seem to focus on the already fit though, I think they should broaden the marketing to encourage people trying to lose weight to try them and also older consumers.

Suzannewithaplan · 27/09/2014 18:22

I was tempted to get a fit bit but I really want something that will track heart rate without the chest strap, currently keeping an eye on
www.epson.co.uk/gb/en/viewcon/corporatesite/cms/index/11219/
and
www.mioglobal.com/fuse.htm

not as lovely looking as the apple watch I agree but also not as expensive

Glittertwins · 27/09/2014 18:34

Crucru, I have the Forerunner15. It's good as a fitness watch but does require charging every 2 nights at least. I have a very nice watch and don't intend to have an Apple watch, much as I like their stuff as this is too much for me.

Glittertwins · 27/09/2014 18:37

And I have the vivofit for everyday use as the watch is also too clunky to have permanently on the other wrist. Both interact with MyFitnessPal too.

Suzannewithaplan · 27/09/2014 18:47

I've a couple of garmins (swim and 210) but really I think it's time they came out with a wearable that doesnt need a chest strap!

Glittertwins · 27/09/2014 18:49

Tomtom have brought out watch that doesn't need a chest strap but I've read lots of articles about chest straps being far better for accuracy.

Suzannewithaplan · 27/09/2014 19:26

yes, quite big though isnt it
and £250

I'm quite hopeful about the mio fuse

Glittertwins · 27/09/2014 19:45

It's too big for me.
