Not to understand when people go to eat out and order...

Beans on toast.

In our neighbourhood a new cafe opened. They have a wonderful menu and Italian chef. People come for beans on toast when they can have Eggs Benedict. Ok, thats not to everybody's taste but beans on toast? Really?

OP posts:

When I was vegan (for about 8 years, currently slowly going back to it),I nearly always ate beans on toast because it was vegan and delicious and filling.

If I could have ordered peanut butter on toast or a bagel I would have. (DS severely allergic).

CornChips · 23/09/2014 17:12

Oh, have just RTFT and realised other people have pointed the vegan thing out.

Sorry Blush

WorraLiberty · 23/09/2014 17:13

Actually I've just thought of another reason

Maybe they don't share the OP's enthusiasm for the chef's cooking, and think beans on toast is the only thing he can get right Grin

TheRealAmandaClarke · 23/09/2014 17:13

I don't like beams on toast.
But i have ordered cheese on toast in a cafe.
Bettys in harrogate do a scrummy welsh rarebit.

TheRealAmandaClarke · 23/09/2014 17:16

I once saw a man sprinkling salt on his buttered toast in a cafe.
I was surprised.

I am a more than competent cook. If I only ever ate things in restaurants and cafés that I couldn't do at home, I'd be spending a fortune in Michelin starred restaurants.
Couldn't have any wine, though, as I can open a bottle at home quite easily.

grovel · 23/09/2014 17:26

The Betty's Welsh Rarebit is £6.75 so it should be yummy!

If I have a pub lunch, I usually order ham and eggs.

I could make it at home, but as most of the family favs dietary intolerance to eggs, and one DD to pork, it's not really something we would have.

So it's a real treat for me.

gincamparidryvermouth · 23/09/2014 17:35

I do see your point about why anyone would order something they could easily make at home, but you have to bear in mind that people go out to eat for reasons other than wanting fancy complicated exotic food. I like going out to eat because I cook every single day at home, and just the idea of someone else cooking, someone else clearing the table, and someone else doing the washing up makes me deliriously happy. It could be a boiled egg and soldiers and a cup of tea for all I care: the pleasure for me is in the sitting down and doing nothing.

LemonadeRayGun · 23/09/2014 17:37

I need to lose weight and am following the slimming world plan. My mum likes to take me and my daughter out for breakfast sometimes, and I have always sworn I will not be one of those people who won't leave the house because they are on a diet. I always order beans on brown toast, no butter. Not only do I actually really enjoy BoT but it is within my SW plan and I can carry on losing weight! Eggs Benedict would not be good for my waistline, particularly cos Mum and I go out once or twice a week...

grovel · 23/09/2014 17:38

Like your name, negroni, and agree your sentiment!

grovel · 23/09/2014 17:43

Have I got that right? I think gincamparidryvermouth comprise a negroni. Off to Google.

MrsMook · 23/09/2014 17:44

Beans on toast is healthy and filling and a sensible choice for food on the go.

I tend to go for things I don't have at home. Seafood is something I home in on as DH dislikes it. Pasta is something I avoid as it's rarely as nice as I'd cook it anyway.

insancerre · 23/09/2014 17:50

So by your reasoning Costa and Starbuck should be out of business
After all everyone can make coffee at home
And why on earth drink wine in the pub when I can have it at home. I should be ordering Bailey's and creme de menthe
What an odd thread

JapaneseMargaret · 23/09/2014 17:50

Absolutely agree with you OP, it's the sort of thing I'd wonder too, if I saw it. Why would you pay money for beans on toast when it's going to be no better, exactly the same even, as you'd make at home?

You'd have to really love baked beans, I suppose...

Branleuse · 23/09/2014 17:55

you might just be in town and hungry. Like going and buying a sandwich, or a jacket potato.

Not everyone wants something fancy for their breakfast or lunch.

Id be a bit surprised if i saw someone ordering beans on toast if they were at a restuarant in the evening though

zen1 · 23/09/2014 18:00

I used to go to my local greasy spoon after finishing a night shift and order 'beans on fried slice' for 30p (this was back in the 90s, it's probably gone up now!) before heading home to bed. It was just nice not to think about having to do anything once I got home and used to tide me over until 4pm.

NutellaPancakes · 23/09/2014 18:02

Sometimes it's just nice to go out and not have to cook and not have to clear up, and maybe be on the spot to do a bit of shopping after, or meet up with friends.

I can cook lots of things. I still like eating out - and in fact, breakfast is probably my favourite meal to eat out. Not because I can't cook a good fry up myself, just because it's a fun indulgence. Sausages, beans, toast, cup of tea, sounds fabulous to me Grin.

BlackeyedSusan · 23/09/2014 18:07

it is usually a cheap way to treat the children to a cafe experience, and something that one is not allergic to.

PoirotsMoustache · 23/09/2014 18:38

Maybe the OP is looking at it from the point of view of someone who rarely gets to eat out, whether it be a cafe or posh restaurant. I don't get to eat anywhere other than home very often, so when I do go out I will order something I don't tend to have in the house. I would absolutely not order beans on toast, simply because it's an 'everyday' food for me.

However, if someone is able to eat out regularly, they probably wouldn't really think about ordering something 'different' from their home meals, as it's not really out-of-ordinary to be eating out.

Or maybe they can only afford the beans on toast off the menu.

kentishgirl · 23/09/2014 19:11

OP, you do realise that if you order something with a 'sauce' anywhere other than a pukka restaurant, so at a cafe or pub, you are 99% of the time just getting a sauce made up from a caterers sauce mix, not made from scratch? I prefer to buy something I know has been freshly made and cooked there, which at a cafe is probably the English breakfast, or toast.

JapaneseMargaret · 23/09/2014 19:30

I eat out frequently, and think choosing baked beans on toast from a cafe menu is funny. Maybe it's the idea of ordering food at a cafe that comes out of a tin. Maybe because I don't really love baked beans, and out of everything on a menu, baked beans would never be top of the list.

DoJo · 23/09/2014 19:39

OP - do you view eating out as a treat generally? Because for many people, eating in cafes and restaurants is simply a fact of life and a means to get a meal that you want when you want it. A lot of the people I know who travel extensively for work will eat things like this in cafes frequently because there is a point at which you don't want 'restaurant' food or a sandwich wrapped in plastic, or even people on their lunch breaks who might eat at cafes every day - for people like this, it's not necessarily a 'treat' to have to choose from a menu every day, and they do just want something they could have at home.
