To ask if my GP can refuse to prescribe the pill for me?

I went to get a repeat prescription for the pill this morning. Usually when I get my repeat prescription he will ask me if I'm aware of the other contraceptive methods like the implant and injection and if I will consider them. I always say that I'm happy on the pill and don't want to change and that's usually the end of that.

However today he was really pushing the other methods and I mean really pushing them. He kept going on about how they're more reliable than the pill, quoting the failure rate of the pill, etc which tbh I already knew about. Even when I said I was happy on the pill and knew all those things he still kept going on about the injection in particular.

In the end he didn't give me my prescription as I still have a few weeks left and he wants me to make an appointment with the nurse before then to talk about other methods in depth. Even though I told him I'd already researched other methods but didn't really like the idea of them.

Now I'm getting worried that he won't prescribe me the pill at all. Can he do that? I have no problems with the pill, am only 26, am not overweight, have low blood pressure and no other risk factors that would make taking the pill risky.

A friend just told me that I should go down to the family planning clinic for more pills but I worry they'll be even pushier when it comes to LARC.

I was refused it, but that was because I suddenly developed high blood pressure. It doesn't sound like he has any good reason to refuse you.

I worked with gynae consultants who would not give Depo to any woman who had no completed her family.

BuggersMuddle · 22/09/2014 21:50

I take Micronor.

I've had the hard sell over the years, but combined oral contraceptives had horrible effects on my mood, my weight and what I suspect were circulatory effects.

Despite all this one GP gave me 'the same thing' when my previous brand disappeared, only for me to find out reading the leaflet that it was a combined pill Hmm

I'm already overweight but was 'reassured' that the injection only causes an average 2kg weight gain (which would tip me into obesity).

Oh and I'm regularly offered the coil despite having monthly symptoms (that Micronor suppresses) that would suggest the coil is not a good choice.

YANBU I have been very very clear with my doctors. This is the only contraceptive that has had no side effects, so why would I change for no reason?

Ive never wanted children. I asked to be sterilised in my late 20s and i was refused.

I was on Depo from mid 2003 to mid 2008. After stopping it it took about 9 months for my periods to come back.

rainbowinmyroom · 22/09/2014 21:53

I am regularly offered the coil although I am in my mid-40s, have no problems with my periods (touch wood) and my husband has been sterilised for years.

TheJourney22 · 22/09/2014 21:53

I had that Depo for 7 years, messed up my body for good! 23 to 30 years old

Lucky if I have a period 4 times a year.

TheJourney22 · 22/09/2014 21:54

Oh I'm now 37 .... Wish I'd never had that ruddy injection

Darkesteyes · 22/09/2014 22:00

Bloody hell Journey. Ive lost 3 stone recently but my periods are all over the shop Sometimes 2 weeks apart sometimes 3 sometimes 4 short ones for 3 days for months then a long one for 8 days. Lady at the clinic said to make an appointment with the doc to get it checked out just in case but it could be just my age or the weightloss. After seeing some of this stuff on here about depo im beginning to wonder although it has been six and a half years since i stopped it.

I have a spare depo at home Is the best thing to take it into the surgery so they can use it or a chemist to be destroyed.

Bulbasaur · 22/09/2014 22:01

Depo didn't mess with me permanently, but it made me tired and hungry all the time so I gained 15lbs in a year. After that I just stuck to the pull out method, which worked for about 5 years.. until it didn't and we had lovely, but unplanned DD.

Now I'm on the nexplanon and love it. Hasn't messed with my weight, made my periods lighter, and I don't even know it's there. I wished I was on this earlier.

You should be able to be in charge of your won reproductive health and which method of BC you choose to use.

Bugsylugs · 22/09/2014 22:26

All very we'll the consultants advising dianette yes it is good for skin but only licensed for that and not for contraception and only for 6 months the people responsible if it goes wrong are those that sign the script not those that advise,

Yasmin new guidelines new risks identified any of you on it even if it suits you should at least discuss at next appointment,

Depo due to causing 'temporary ' osteoporosis should only be used for up to 2 tears. Of course if you and your Dr are happy with the risks that may be ok but needs to be discussed higher risk in teenage and early 20's.

Mirena excellent for ladies towards end of fertile years with rubbish periods but may not work or suit.

Each time I see a nurse at my GPs surgery they always ask if I want to try the coil instead of the pill. When I fist asked why I was told it was just a samartie point thing, each time they asked me I asked them why ask. The last time the nurse said its because it's cheaper. I don't mind them asking if I'd like to change but I wouldn't want to feel pressurised for cost reasons.

moxon · 23/09/2014 12:40

trinity Grin And you can spend all the money saved on tampons on wine and chocolate instead. Win win! Currently off it as sort of ttc but already dead excited about going back on it again after. Ah, cerazette

SoAnnoyedRightNow · 23/09/2014 21:58

Well I managed to pop along to the family planning clinic today and I explained my situation. The nurse simply prescribed the pill to me, just like I wanted.

No fuss, no hard sell for other methods (although I did also manage to get a handful of free condoms Grin)...just simply prescribed the pill for me.

Result! Do complain still. In writing. Because it's not on to hard sell you like that.

rainbowinmyroom · 23/09/2014 22:09

Don't go back to the GP anymore for birth control and they need to know why.
