To think the school should be able to spell my sons surname correctly?

Its not exactly an unusual surname 8 letters, it ends in ly and people often spell it this way or ending ie, ds has been at the same school for 4 years now, the first 3 teachers did not have a problems spelling it correctly, but his new teacher does, I had to speak to her as all his books, tray and coat peg were all labelled incorrectly, this was changed week before last, but last week he came home with his reading record spelt incorrectly again, I just crossed it out and spelt it correctly.

This morning I looked in his bag and he had a certificate for achievement but it was screwed up, he normally wants to put it on the fridge but didn't with this one as it was spelt wrong again.

TBH I am used to people getting my surname wrong all the time, but its has really annoyed my son.

YANBU
I have the same problem with DS. He has a common Irish surname but everybody tries to spell it with a 'C' in the middle. I am now in the habit of automatically saying 'xxxxxxx without the C!'
It really annoys me though because we were very well known at DS's last school as he has complex SN and i was regularly in for meetings etc so they should have known our names quite well! It was only a week before he left, after 4 years there, that the school receptionist confessed that she had been trying to spell it right but the SENCO had convinced her it was with a C!
Now he is at a special school with only 4 children in the class and they spell it wrong as well!

Thanks all.

I spoke to the teacher again, she apologised again said she will be more careful, admitted she is terrible with names but will make sure this doesn't happen again. DS seemed happy so I am happy :)

Y.N.B.U. My name's Clare. People often spell it Claire which I don't mind on a personal levelbut I always point it out for legal purposes ect. However it makes me seeeeeeeeethe when people spell it Clair

My sons nursery have just stopped using his (my) surname altogether and are using his Dads name instead even though that is not his name. It's fairly annoying but other than constantly correcting them not sure what else can be done.

There is a child in my class with a really lovely name that I have a real problem with spelling correctly. However, I made up a little visual thing to help me remember it.....you can't just keep on getting it wrong and expect the child/parents to be ok about it. I would have a whinge personally.

Sorry, just saw that you spoke to her, well done. Glad it went well.

Has the teacher got the correct spelling on the register?

YANBU - I have similar problems and it does my head in. Most 6yos can copy an eight letter word correctly so what excuse do adults have???

I can remember in Y1 the TA was writing DD2s name on the board for some reason and knew instantly from DDs scowl that she had opted for the wrong spelling of her quite common name that has 2 spellings. The TA quickly changed it, actually found me after school to apologise, and it never happened again.

Getting someone's name right is a simple matter of respect. Suggesting it is OK to have it spelt incorrectly is like saying it is OK to call you something completely different! It's like calling a Carl 'Carol', after all what difference does one letter make!
