I have a friend who is a Conservative M.P. and I dislike his facebook posts...

Wibu to unfriend him?

I liked him a lot at school, he seems like a nice guy now, but I only accepted his friend request as I was being nosy about what he's up to, tbh, and now I think I would not get on so well with him. But some of his posts are quite interesting as they show a political view point from an official source, if you know what I mean?

Maybe I should have put friend in "." As we are not in regular contact and haven't been for years.

?? You can unfriend whomever you wish: Tory, Labour, or Raving Monster Looney.

Personally, I would enjoy spying on him, then complaining about his illiberal views (and showing off). Or if he's actually a lovely friend, I wouldn't want to hurt his feelings.

Caff2 · 22/09/2014 01:48

I do quite enjoy spying on his illiberal posts (not offensively illiberal, at the mo, just slagging off Ed M tbf!)

But I never comment, as actually I did really like him ages ago and he seems nice now. I just don't like some of his posts.

Sounds entertaining, but I love laughing at people's absurdity on facebook.

Caff2 · 22/09/2014 01:59

Grin I'll keep him for entertainment value then!

You can just hide his posts from your feed so that you only see them when you click type his name in search.

Taz1212 · 22/09/2014 07:34

I would keep him. I have friends right across the political spectrum and as Scotland's only Tory voter am at complete polar opposites to many . I like seeing a range of views even if I think some of them are completely mad and the odd one offensive.

ThatBloodyWoman · 22/09/2014 07:42

He's a Tory.
I'd unfriend him.

Spoken like a true lefty scumbag.

Talking of illiberal views...

I'd discuss the points with him, publicly.

Tinkerball · 22/09/2014 08:12

Ramrod was there any need for that! I'm not a "lefty scumbag" and I can't stand the Tories either, this was all fairly light hearted until you posted that!

ThatBloodyWoman · 22/09/2014 08:23

Yes, I was being light hearted!

Obviously some people have no sense of humour.

But, if thats where we're going, ramrod would you care to explain your use of scumbag towards me? Because I don't like it, and I think an apology is in order.

WaitingForMe · 22/09/2014 08:23

I think there is great value to be had in exposing yourself to alternative views. I am right wing but read the Guardian because it makes me challenge my views. A good friend is very left wing and argues his case well (he gives me the same compliment while thoroughly disagreeing with me).

The ignorant/wrong people are not those different to you. The ignorant/wrong are the people incapable of considering the motivations/ideas/feelings of the other end of the spectrum. Keep your friend (if you like him) and learn something (even if the thing you learn is greater confidence in your pre-existing beliefs).

I'd suggest a group hug but would probably get stoned Wink

MollyHooper · 22/09/2014 08:24

Scumbag is as scumbag does.

WooWooOwl · 22/09/2014 08:27

Unfriend whoever you want to unfriend, you don't need permission from strangers on the internet.

Personally, I choose to hide people's post when they write too much drivel that bores me, it's easy and means you can still contact that person if you want to. Alternatively, you could just keep your finger moving and scroll past his posts without investing so much mental energy in it.

rainbowinmyroom · 22/09/2014 08:30

Hide him.

Cabrinha · 22/09/2014 08:36

What a bizarre OP.
Friend, unfriend, whatever.

Do you need us to tell you which way round to put your pants on and what to have for breakfast this morning too?

HumphreyCobbler · 22/09/2014 08:44

Whilst I wouldn't call anyone a scumbag (some of my best friends are Labour voters he he) it is fairly standard on mumsnet that Tories are fair game.

I would keep his newsfeed as he is an MP I would find it interesting.

BigbyWolf · 22/09/2014 08:56

I have a friend on Facebook who I went to school with. From some of his posts, he clearly votes Labour and hates the Conservatives.
I'm a Tory voter.
I wouldn't unfriend him because we have opossing political views. I still like him.

BigbyWolf · 22/09/2014 08:57

*opposing! Grrrr, stupid ipad...

ThatBloodyWoman · 22/09/2014 09:03

I'm not a labour voter btw.
