To try a mooncup (or similar)

Sounds ideal, no itchy thrush causing tampons, no rustly sanitary towels that I have to throw in the bin........but do they actually work and are they comfortable?

Mooncup was awful, ended up cutting the stem right away and still felt like I was being jabbed all the time.

A few months ago I bought a Meluna with a ring on the end (sounds dreadful) and it is so comfy.

MagpieMama · 21/09/2014 22:40

I love mine! It's so comfortable and easy to use.
I don't think emptying it is particularly 'gross', certainly no more than changing a pad or tampon.

KirstyJC · 21/09/2014 22:40

I find it only really works if you can reach a sink whilst sitting on the loo! Luckily, I can - both at work and home.

It lasts longer than a tampon does although I still use a liner on work days for the first 2 days as I have a very heavy time of it. I cut the stem off completely and can't feel it at all.

To start with, I did worry that it was always leaking a bit as it doesn't feel as dry down there as when I used tampons. Then I realised that was normal and that you're not meant to be completely dry!

The only problem I have had is that when it fills up and needs changing, you don't have very long from when you feel it go to when you start overflowing. With tampons, even on a mega heavy day, I would be able to last about 5 mins so managed to eg get off the phone at work and find a loo. With the mooncup I don't get that - you feel it go and you start to run! So you do have to remember it's there and keep on top of changing it.

I took to my mooncup straight away. Never had any problems with it (except that the first time I used it I had to keep checking it hadn't fallen out as I couldn't feel it constantly like I could with tampons).

I always found that tampons leeked, because of their shape but that has only happened once with my mooncup in the 8 years or so I have been using it.

GreenPetal94 · 21/09/2014 23:09

I used a mooncup successfully for a number of months and then once it shifted and leaked. That only had to happen once for me to lose confident to use it without a pad as well so there was no point then.

Thank you all, I appreciate it's not a 100% rave review but I'm going to try it (preferences on brand would be helpful). I'll be sure to have some tramlines on hand in case it doesn't work out and will try it at home for a few days first.

i have a femmecup which i really like - one of my reasons for picking it was that i didn't have to choose between sizes...

BloodyUserName · 22/09/2014 07:52

That's the thing, I've just been on the meluna site and I have no idea what size, handle etc (love the colours though).

I am a recent convert. I used to buy softcups from Boots, but they've been discontinued, very annoying, mso I have to buy them off Amazon.

I prefer the disposableness of them as I have super heavy periods and emptying a mooncup just won't work.

travelswithtea · 22/09/2014 08:04

Can I hijack the thread, please? Hopefully it will help the OP too though. :)
I've been thinking of getting one for a while but they do require a bit of financial investment and I have been worried about choosing the "wrong" one with it not working for me and then just not trying again because there are so many to spend money on just for trying out.
Could those of you have had to try multiple brands perhaps list those you tried first and the one you ended up with? Pretty please?
E.g.
I Tried = Bluecloud (leaked), Buttercup (lip too hard, funny tip at end), Ladybug (size 2 too small, but size 3 too big)
The Perfect One = Applesauce
I think this way maybe we can get a good overview of which brands seem overall the best?
Thank you!!! Flowers

Shameless bump

pregnantpause - sorry if this is a bit personal, but do you bleed very heavily? Having to remove it six times a day sounds a bit excessive otherwise, I'm not surprised that left you a bit sore. I find twice, maybe three times a day more than enough, but I don't want to assume

addictedtosugar · 23/09/2014 08:19

Only bought one.
A me luna with a ring stem.
Klassic design.
Could be medium or large. Not sure.
Its purple tho Grin

The Meluna site has a page for calculating your size and firmness. They say there's no need to go by age, it's more fitness and body size.

However somebody pointed out to me recently that the meluna is made from some sort of plastic, which may not be fully tested for what kind of chemicals it leaches into the body. She recommended using one either made from medical grade silicon (mooncup) or latex rubber (The keeper I think is latex)

The problem with people recommending what worked for them is it's likely to be highly subjective. Everyone has a different vagina Grin

If you're feeling pressure with it, then you're probably using a cup which is either too big or too firm. If you have one which leaks then it's either too soft or too big or too small (confusing!) - leaks are caused by it not sealing properly which could be it not opening fully or could be that it's sitting at an angle or your vaginal wall is too strong preventing it from staying fully open.

They tend to be good even for heavy periods as they hold much more than a pad or tampon. Some people even find they reduce flow and cramping. No idea how this works but it's nice! :)

TouchPauseEngage · 23/09/2014 19:52

op Im just 30 and bought the one for under 30's. I couldn't imagine what could have occurred in the last two months to suddenly make my vagina grow. Pleased to say it fits so I obviously have the vagina of a slightly younger woman Grin

BloodyUserName · 24/09/2014 08:50

Thanks all. I obviously think everything is all very snug and firm in my tuppence but one woman's thimble is another woman's bucket. I'm going to try a colourful meluna and will use the size calculator.
