To give up with homemade bread

I have a lovely bread maker and we love homemade bread.....especially thickly sliced white bread with loads of butter which is doing our waistlines no good.

I mad a wholemeal loaf today and attempted to slice it. What a disaster! It either crumbled or the slices were too thick. I've got a Lakeland bread slicer but it's useless.

Has anyone got any suggestions for thinly sliced bread? Or is it impossible without the huge industrial slicer they use in Tesco?

Mmeh you must be on about the Sainsburys Wholegrain Seeded Bread Flour. Really easy to bake, and by far the best I've ever had.

I go further than some previous posters and do 2 cups white to one cup Brown / wholemeal and it still looks / tastes like a brown loaf but, importantly, behaves itself when being sliced. Also adding a bit of oil and some dried milk powder to the mix helps make it less crumbly. Our bread maker packed in months ago and we have never replaced as we are in the routine of doing by hand now, and results are as good / better.

Joining thread for the great tips! I use a bread maker but would love to get into the habit of doing it by hand.

I'm with other posters...ditch the bread machine!!

DH bought us a breadmaker earlier this year.

I hate it - tastes 100x better made by hand and baked in the oven.

Castlemilk · 22/09/2014 10:36

Hmm, never have a problem slicing from the breadmaker. BUT it needs to be thoroughly cool AND we have a Panasonic...

I would never dispute that homemade bread, or rather handmade bread Is best, but for me the point is that it takes about 2 mins to make a bread maker loaf and a lot longer to make a "proper" one? I just don't have that time.

OP we do a third whole meal and rest white and it slices well, if it s cold ( and au pair isn't slicing!)

Collaborate - yes that's the one! Often out of stock so I always buy about three packs when it's in.

Mmeh · 23/09/2014 17:36

(Even my fussy white bread-loving dads and artisan bread-loving do like it!)

Mmeh · 23/09/2014 17:36

Dds... Not dads...

Mmeh · 23/09/2014 17:38

Dh not do.... Bloody autocorrect

Spotsonmydots · 23/09/2014 17:42

I agree make by hand. put some olive oil in/experiment with different flours and add things like sunflower seeds/cranberries/walnuts etc (not all together :-)

StepAwayFromTheEcclesCakes · 23/09/2014 17:50

electric knife and cut when the bread is cold not hot straight from the machine.

We have a Panasonic. For sandwiches, we use their sand bread recipes. It's different to their standard loaves. Definitely wait until the bread has cooled.
