Everyone around me at work is going on about what number phone hardware they have. Its like the dullest conversation ever.

One guy just said I could upgrade for only 30 a month. 30 a month for 24 months sounds a lot to me especially as my current phone is just fine!

I think anyone who validates themselves through status possessions just really hasn't understood what life is all about.

Life is supposed to be fun, if a new toy like a phone adds to the fun, what's the harm?!

That being said, I tune out to those sorts of conversations too....

Legionofboom · 19/09/2014 14:44

splendide I love technology. I have an ipad that I use all the time. I just can't get excited by phones so I save my money for other gadgets.

Can someone explain to me what a phone hardware number is please? I've never heard of it. (Not in UK if that explains it)

splendide · 19/09/2014 14:48

Totally fair enough Legion and I'm not hugely into phones myself. I just think the sneering is a bit stupid.

splendide · 19/09/2014 14:50

Oh and I'm not sure what people mean by hardware number either! I presume the OP just means people referring to, say, an iphone 6 or 5C or whatever. Phones have model numbers I guess but I've never heard anyone drop one into conversation.

Legionofboom · 19/09/2014 14:57

Thanks Splendide

I thought maybe it was some sort of upgrade code or something.

And I agree, sneering is a bit stupid. It's a bit of a leap from someone wanting a new gadget because it's fun and maybe even useful to them validating themselves through status possessions.

Sorry my last post could use some punctuation Blush

My stepson works for mobile phone store, he's been dreading today, - customers have been badgering staff for days about the new releases insisting they must know Hmm

Got the iPhone 5s and it's a bag of shit. It's only useful if everyone you know also has an iphone and everyone I know except my Mum has android so many of the features are lost on me and it doesn't have features I need. I hate safari as well, still loyal to google so use the google app 24/7 but it's insistent on crashing often booting me out of sites when I'm in the middle of something Angry. Oh yeah and this was my first experience with an iphone, didn't realise the buggers have no memory card slot like most phones. You just get lumped with whatever memory you pay for, I have the smallest memory option and now don't have enough memory on my phone to download IOS 8 Angry.

Anyway needless to say when I upgrade my contract I'm going back to android, definitely shan't be touching the 6. And yanbu btw Wink, it is very boring and pointless.

Everyotherfreckle · 19/09/2014 15:48

One of DHs friends has always been an Apple man, and if anyone ever slags off Apple or iPhones (so the time!) he takes it really personally and gets really offended.

The other day he wrote an angry status on Facebook about how awful it is that everyone is slagging off this new iOS 8 or whatever and that 'he never bad mouths Android phones so why do people feel the need to put down iPhones all the time'.

It's. A. Phone.

Everyotherfreckle · 19/09/2014 15:49

I am a totaly dinosaur - i don't even have enough memory on my iPhone 4 to download ios7!

AstoriaMalfoy · 19/09/2014 15:52

Well I'm excited about my new iphone 6 Grin
And I've been out today Wink

People being interested in things other people aren't shocker.

Numfardothedanceofshame · 19/09/2014 17:32

poolomoomon just update via iTunes, you don't need as much free space.

OwlCapone · 19/09/2014 17:35

I think that anyone who starts a thread about how they think that anyone that goes on about what number their phone is needs to get out more, probably needs to get out more.

TheFilthiestPersonAlive · 19/09/2014 17:43

I agree. The conversations I've heard all remind me of when you're a kid and you're competing as to who has the best bike/Atari etc. I didn't engage then and I can't bring myself to now.

Mine is a T Mobile Energy which was £50 DH bought it for my birthday over 2 years ago. Its fine. I can post on fb can only scroll partway down my twitter feed and not post and cant MN at all. But i use my laptop for those things and dont social network when im out and about as i like to look where im going and socially interact.

Ive seen couples in coffee shops glued to their phones instead of talking and laughing together and i find this a bit sad tbh.

Im not interested in upgrading and last week bought a basic phone for £9. So i have a spare one in case my one goes pffft.

sarahighseas · 19/09/2014 18:30

Well I did raise this more because of people at work calling something that cost 30 a month as "cheep"

MrsPiggie · 19/09/2014 18:31

Yabu. I'm bored stiff by women who bang on about the latest Boden collection or whatever. Or football fans. But it's their life, it doesn't mean I have to embrace it. For what it's worth, my phone is 2 years old and I won't upgrade any time soon unless I drop it in the toilet.

JCDenton · 19/09/2014 20:02

It might be, depending on how much you use it and what you do with it. I spend about that on my phone and that's right for me. My dad is well served by a phone that costs a quarter of that, because we're different people with different interests.

My computer would be complete overkill for most people, many people wouldn't want to drive my car as it would be too small, and that's fine, because everyone has different interests.

JustAShopGirl · 19/09/2014 20:16

my Nokia was discontinued in 2007.... (I just looked it up) but it still works and does what I want. I get called a Luddite but it is never ME complaining about the phone constantly ringing.... or having to drop everything to answer a text etc... different folks have different priorities I guess, mine rarely involve use of a phone.
