To think this is over the top?

Ds is 3 and has been at preschool since the start of September. He's finding it generally ok but today the nursery assistant had a word with me when I picked him up.
Apparently this afternoon he hadn't had his listening ears on and had run off rather than sitting down on the mat. He also went to water play without an apron. He had time sat on the thinking chair, which is appropriate and fairly common practice in nurseries.
However, the assistant said that he is also not going to be allowed to play outside tomorrow morning with the other children. I don't know how long this would be for-I plan to find out tomorrow morning. Instead he'll be sat on the thinking chair.

AIBU in thinking that this isn't appropriate punishment in that it's the day after so will have little affect and it's too big a punishment?

That sounds very harsh! I would question its relevancy when you see the staff tomorrow.

Seems way over the top to me

He's been at the same nursery since he was 1. We've never had any issues and they have always been brilliant. However, preschool, while part of the same nursery, is a different section with different people running it.

Definitely OTT I wouldn't be happy with a punishment being carriedforward to the next day especially for something so minor!

JetsAndSugar · 17/09/2014 17:11

Age 3 is too young to carry over a punishment to the next hour never mind the next day. It will just seem like a random act of meanness to him.

Pico2 · 17/09/2014 17:13

That sounds really inappropriate and I would be concerned if they aren't able to get children to comply without this kind of action. Most nurseries dont seem to have to do this. What are the staff ratios like?

It does seem ott and I agree that any consequences should be the same day. However they probably wont back down so good luck tomorrow op!

startwig1982 · 17/09/2014 17:21

I think the ratio is 1 to 5. They only have a few children on Wednesdays so I would have thought they could have dealt with it without needing to do something tomorrow.

Seems ott to me (nursery teacher). There is absolutely no point in putting in consequences so late after the event. Your son will not make a link between his behaviour today, and his consequence tomorrow.

Glad people agree with me. I'll talk to then tomorrow and see what they say.
