I suffer from really bad periods. My work have a policy of only paying for 3 sick days per year.

I easy use more than this just with bad periods.

Anyone else think women should get more sick days to allow for periods?

I don't get paid for any sick days unless signed off

MrsDavidBowie · 17/09/2014 12:48

What steps have you taken to get through your periods? Have you had them investigated?

seasavage · 17/09/2014 12:49

YABU
See a Dr?

lunar1 · 17/09/2014 12:51

Yabu. Why should periods be more important than and other condition someone may have?

Can you imagine how somebody suffering a long term medical condition would feel if they weren't getting sick pay while you were?

cheerybear · 17/09/2014 12:54

Seriously, are you having a laugh? I have bad periods, I just get on with it as my career is important, talk about trying to hold women back from progressing.

There is a gentleman at my work who has chemotherapy in the morning and is back to work later in the afternoon, I am sure that is much worse than being on the blob!

Bearsinmotion · 17/09/2014 12:55

YABU I'm afraid. It's not something that affects all women, it would be discriminatory to allow more sick leave just based on gender - and more complex - would it just apply to premenopausal women?!

OTOH, three days sick leave is a bit rubbish, YANBU to suggest more paid sick leave for everyone.

GoAndDoSomeWork · 17/09/2014 13:02

It is apparently not normal to have really painful periods. Go to your GP and ask for a referral to a gynae - perhaps you have endometriosis.

LadyLuck10 · 17/09/2014 13:04

Yabu, I can just see people using this to their advantage. Sounds like you want special treatment for women.

itiswhatitiswhatitis · 17/09/2014 13:04

Most ridiculous thing I've ever heard

Pipbin · 17/09/2014 13:05

I am so very lucky with getting nice easy periods. But if I fancied a day off I could just phone up saying I was having a bad period.

What if you always had bad ones and then called in sick each month. Then your work would know your cycle. No chance of keeping a pregnancy secret.

MaidOfStars · 17/09/2014 13:06

Ludicrous idea.

itsmeitscathy · 17/09/2014 13:10

....your sick leave policy is rubbish.

But YABU

Biscuit

Take one of these....

CleanLinesSharpEdges · 17/09/2014 13:13

I don't even know where to start in explaining what a ridiculous idea this is.

You need to see a doctor.

AMumInScotland · 17/09/2014 13:14

Because what women really need in the workplace is to be legally treated as weak and incapable of holding down a fulltime job without needing special treatment... You need to think this one through a little more!

EBearhug · 17/09/2014 13:14

It was having to take a day sick because of my period (having managed not to do so for nearly 30 years before) which prompted me to see my GP. She said no woman in this day and age should have periods interrupting daily life, and we talked through the options, starring with tranexamic acid to Mirena and so on.

I know not all GPs are as enlightened as she is (some people have had, "Well, it's just part of being a woman,") so think about going to another doctor if yours isn't so helpful. And campaign for more sick leave allowance for all, not just something which should be basically healthy and manageable.

squoosh · 17/09/2014 13:15

I've never had a period pain in my life. Sympathy for those who suffer but think the GP will be more help than a duvet day.

DwellsUndertheSink · 17/09/2014 13:19

with extended maternity leave already causing employers to think twice about employing younger women, why on earth would we campaign for something that would make us even less attractive to employers? And why would you want any employer to know your menstrual cycle...urgh, a terrible idea. Periods are not an illness, but if you struggle with pain, see a doctor and get it investigated!

Veritata · 17/09/2014 14:13

Well, that would be one way of making it even more difficult for women to get jobs in a difficult employment market.

But employers who only allow three days' sick leave are riding for constructive dismissal and discrimination claims.

GlossyFossil · 17/09/2014 14:17

no way!

employers don't need more reasons to discriminate against women. i've never taken a day off because of my period. ONce i had an early mc, ended up in the whittington at about 1am and I managed to make it in to work (late) the next day after being discharged. I looked shit and people told me so. I was grey. But I made it in. not looking for a medal. just saying.

combust22 · 17/09/2014 14:21

Good god no.

Menstruation is a normal part of life.

EvansOvalPiesYumYum · 17/09/2014 14:23

I suffered with dreadfully bad periods for all of my menstruating life. I would NOT have welcomed extra "sympathy" time off. For goodness' sake, some of us have fought for equal rights in the workplace - I would consider your proposal to be a complete set-back and put us, as women, back into the 18th century.

I'd far prefer it if someone genuinely, seriously ill could have more time off without question.

You are most definitely being most Unreasonable! (And of course, your proposed policy would be open to "interpretation" Wink
Some women would phone in sick, claiming "Ooh, I'm having a bad period day". Employers would have to start keeping a check on who is having time off for that reason - that means EVERYONE knows when you are having your period at all times in your life.
No Thank You!!

Marcipex · 17/09/2014 14:24

I don't get any sick pay/leave at all, so would prefer your 3 days.

EvansOvalPiesYumYum · 17/09/2014 14:33

Sarah - I don't understand why your employer has a policy of only paying for three sick days a year. What country are you in? I realise different countries have different rules.

CuChullain · 17/09/2014 14:38

I will support your campaign if you support my campaign for men to have several man flu days a year….deal?
