Tiny weeny holes in teeshirts and tops

JumpRope · 17/09/2014 12:00

I think these are very common. I'm not sure what causes them (my own theory is its seatbeats across lap whilst driving, since mine nearly always near my tummy).

Just wondered whether you think its reasonable to return a top which gets these holes, and if so, in what timescale? Clothes mainly from Boden/Gap, so not the cheapest of the cheap.

I get these in tops from New Look and H&W.

Mum says it's fabric softener - so I've stopped using it.

I thought moths so have bought moth balls.

Frustrating as clothes really do not last as long as they used to!!

DoJo · 17/09/2014 12:05

Hmm, I would be surprised if it wasn't to do with the way they are washed - an overfull drum can cause clothes to snag on the inside, or if you leave zips undone (particularly metal ones on jeans etc) they can 'bite' into clothes and cause these types of hole. I would be surprised if it was a manufacturing fault.

JumpRope · 17/09/2014 12:07

I don't use fabric conditioner, and don't tend to overfill the machine, the opposite if anything. Jeans/zipped things done separately.

I get these all the time too - around my tummy too and can't figure out what is causing them to save my life - really annoying though! If you find out what causes them please let me know!

Bue · 17/09/2014 12:07

I think it depends on the timescale, really. I have this problem but they never appear until 6 mos to a year have passed. It was the great mystery of life - tor ages I thought it was my new washing machine but eventually I decided on standing at the kitchen sink doing the washing up - I think the tops rub at counter level. Since we got a dishwasher I swear the holes do not appear nearly so much.

PrettyPictures92 · 17/09/2014 12:08

Only my son's tops get these and he doesn't go in a car - they're bought from tesco/peacocks/primark/new look etc. Every single damn one of them and he's only 3 :s

MsMarvel · 17/09/2014 12:11

I get these bit it's only on my work clothes. For work I wear a till key on the waistband of my trousers, so pulling it to reach the till and letting it snap back catches my top and leaves little holes.

Quenelle · 17/09/2014 12:11

I get them on all my tshirts, from New Look, DP, Gap, White Stuff, FatFace...it's very annoying.

They are always in the area that covers my belt buckle, never anywhere else. I think when I sit at my desk at work or lean against the kitchen worktop the buckle rubs against the fabric and that causes the holes.

MrsCurrent · 17/09/2014 12:12

I thought it was my belt but tbh we get them in random places on all of our tshirts, new look stuff is the worst for it.

LimburgseVlaai · 17/09/2014 12:12

Yes! I get those!

I think it's a belt or metal button/seatbelt combo. Very irritating.

TheresAFiremanOnMyZebra · 17/09/2014 12:13

I always get these. Definitely not seatbelts as I'm rarely in a car. For me it's my belt buckle that does it, the location matches perfectly

Jackie0 · 17/09/2014 12:14

I used to get this all the time, and not just on cheap clothes.
I came to the conclusion it was leaning over my work top/ island cleaning it and the cleaner rotted my clothes. I stand back a bit now or wear an apron and it seems to have stopped.

JumpRope · 17/09/2014 12:14

Does nobody return them? Manufacturers must know it happens.

VodkaJelly · 17/09/2014 12:14

I get them aswell, my sons t-shirts get them but on the back. It is really strange. I wear a name badge on a lanyard at work so thought it was that rubbing but it happens to my non work clothes too.

JumpRope · 17/09/2014 12:15

Jackie0, I always wear an apron, and the only product I use is fairy liquid....

LittleprincessinGOLDrocks · 17/09/2014 12:15

I put them down to tumble drying clothes. I think it happens to most brands, as I shop at different places to my sis and SIL and we all have the same issues. Mostly in kids clothing though.

JumpRope · 17/09/2014 12:16

See, I don't tumble dry either.

Everyone has a theory. Maybe, its just badly made stuff Angry

OP posts:
gamerchick · 17/09/2014 12:17

This isn't a returnable issue.. unless you find out what in your environment is causing this then it's going to keep happening.

Dontstepinthecowpat · 17/09/2014 12:17

I used to get these till I realised it was only on clothes I had washed with my bras. Now I always makes sure bras are clipped at the back before washing and it doesn't happen Smile

Hoppinggreen · 17/09/2014 12:17

It's moths.
Took me about a year to figure it out, the little buggers are hard to get rid of

Lemonsole · 17/09/2014 12:18

I thought that it was because of trousers and belts - but found three this week on a dress, so nothing to rub there. The work top theory is, I think the most likely cause. Bloody annoying, though.

Lemonsole · 17/09/2014 12:20

But why would moths only ever nibble in the same place? And the way I fold t-shirts after ironing, the holes appear in an inaccessible part of the top when it's in the wardrobe.

JumpRope · 17/09/2014 12:20

Hoppinggreen - moths prefer woollen clothing or even silk, since it has more protein in the fibres. I have cashmere jumpers galore, and silk tops in the same drawers as my tees - not affected AT ALL!!

OP posts:
bberry · 17/09/2014 12:20

Me too!!! Some v quickly... Others take longer... I presumed it was my tummy pressing my jeans out so the corner rubs on the top....

It's always in the same place.... And tops I wear with jeans mainly...not dresses....

Aherdofmims · 17/09/2014 12:21

I get this. Thought it was moths. Is it moths? need to know!

Washing machine also makes sense.
