To speak to the teacher about this?

Ok, to start DS(6) yr 2 teacher seems lovely.
We have had an issue with him telling lies, most

About him getting a reward/sticker from his teacher for writing. Last year when we saw his books I was very shocked to see how poor his writing was, as is good at home. Appreciate he has 1-1 at home, also found out he stayed in break time a lot last year to finish writing work (again first I knew was end of year). I upset him by saying I thought he had not tried his best.

All came to a head tonight, lots of tears from him. Was thinking of chatting to his teacher to explain how he is feeling (total lack of confidence) and asking for her ideas. Also have no issue with him being kept in, but it clearly isn't working in its own and I don't want him to hate writing as he does now? Also know I got it wrong by saying what I did to him.

Have a sad little boy.

He might be getting a sticker for effort. DS1 seemed to not get his work finished sometimes but it wasn't a big deal, did the teacher mention it?

Why dud it come to a head?

Definitely talk to the teacher and see if you can come up with some strategies. I teach Year 2 (and Year R and 1) and would hate for a parent and child to be upset about something and not to come and talk to me.

You sound lovely. I think you are right, you just need to show him it doesn't matter that much. Personally I would feel a bit concerned about a six year old being kept in at break time. Maybe talk to the teacher, as you suggest, about gentler ways to tackle it. Neat handwriting is not the be all and end all of a six year old's life.

Definitely no sticker, his story didn't ring true and he admitted he made it up. Had a chat about why, and he said because he wished he did get one, but never did as he was rubbish at writing. Lots of tears. His teacher last year didn't really do praise (with him) and he really noticed.

Thanks DuellingFangos - its not so much neatness but story writing, he just panics. Shame he can't apply his vivid imagination to paper!

"Upset boy"
That suggests to me that you should chat to the teacher.
He seems really lacking in confidence with his writing. A good teacher can really help. I would go in and see what they can do/how you can help.

Thanks Wolfiefan will have a chat, keen not to come across as PFB.but he was so sad. He is very tired too so didn't help.
