To think you don't burn "Comfort" in an oil burner?

There was an almighty stench in the communal hallway of the block of flats yesterday....like chemical burning....I saw my (lovely) neighbour had placed an oil burner outside her door (again despite being warned it's a fire hazard) and traced the stink to this.

I asked her what was in it and she said "Comfort"

Confused

Is this a "thing" or is she just making a mistake? It's got to be bad for you yes? Burning chemicals like that?

The hallways often smells of the elderly lady downstairs' dinner...usually reeky stuff like cabbage and fish...I told her to cease and desist and we'd think of something better and safer to fragrance the hall with!

That is odd. I suppose she thought it smells nice so she wanted to put it in there, but they're designed to burn oils rather than fabric softener!

Oh for gods sake, this woman is a bloody hazzard. I remember your other thread about her.

If she wants the hall to smell fresh tell her to dilute some comfort with a little water in a spary bottle and lightly spray the hall with it. Next time she leaves an oil burner in the hall - report her before she burns the flats down.

fieldfare · 15/09/2014 16:57

I don't think it would work neat, but if it's a big bowl and she'd put a few drops of comfort in mostly water then that would surely smell nice. Similar idea I suppose to rubbing the radiators with a bit of comfort so when they come on it smells nice. Maybe she was a bit misguided and forgot the water?

WestmorlandSausage · 15/09/2014 16:58

suggest to her putting diluted comfort in a spray bottle instead and spraying it around. Smells like fresh laundry,we do it before visitors come rather than spraying overpowering air fresheners and it has the added benefit of not being an aerosol/ overly perfumed.

edamsavestheday · 15/09/2014 16:59

Oh good Lord what a dangerous dimwit. I think you need to get on to the landlord, if she rents, or the managing agents if leasehold. Sounds like she'll just come up with something else profoundly dangerous if not given official rules and regs.

Bulbasaur · 15/09/2014 17:04

had placed an oil burner outside her door

Doesn't matter if she even had oil in it. You never put fire hazards in an area you are not able to supervise. Hmm

Had a friend/roommate that destroyed our bathroom sink counter because she forgot about a candle she was burning. It burned a hole in the counter top and she was lucky the place didn't catch fire. Shock

Bulb I know....bless her though, she's quite young and hasn't had a great upbringing. She's just a bit clueless domestically.

icymaiden · 15/09/2014 17:48

I know fly lady suggests wiping radiators with fabric conditioner to give off a smell when they warm up.

gentlehoney · 15/09/2014 17:54

Fabric conditioner works very well in the glass "air purifiers" that are shaped like a goldfish bowl.
Perhaps you could suggest she gets one of those?

MrsWinnibago · 15/09/2014 18:51

Christmas you know Zoflora is toxic to cats? I didn't....you learn something every day!

My friend put cooking oil in her oil burner because she though it was the nice smelling candles that made the oil smell nice she didn't realise you had to buy nice smelling special oil to put in it ! She has a PHD!!
