how long ago was it? probably not! and please don't use a company, it really is very easy, have a look at moneysavingexpert, there is a form where you can just fill in your details, and just send, they can't argue now, i got mine pretty easily and that was before they legally had to refund it. will only take half an hour, go for it! don't let these companies steal a big chunk of it!

Grumpyoldblonde · 15/09/2014 16:51

There is no deadline, do it yourself though, all the company will do is stick a stamp on an envelope and take 30% of your redress, they have no inside info, no special powers at all, I claimed 315k by simply writing asking my bank if I had PPI and why I should not have.
You don't need to be good at writing letters to do it yourself, in fact most bank websites have a link to do an online claim - do it, go on !!!
Advice on MSE is spot on if you need help

Grumpyoldblonde · 15/09/2014 16:53

sorry that was £15K !!!!

Catgotyourbrain · 15/09/2014 17:00

I got 2k from it earlier this year.

Took me 15mins to do the forms.
Don't use a company!!! You'd have to provide them with the same info. Just need account details, address at time etc.

You'd be mad to use a company

Fluffyears · 15/09/2014 17:45

Don't use a company I got told that there letters go to bottom
Of pile by someone who works in ppi. Make sure when it asks for agreement/account number you right 'all' as the they have to
Look at all accounts. Good luck
I'm in middle of forms today.

BigglesFliesUndone · 15/09/2014 19:13

We have claimed loads of times. I basically went though all my old credit cards and used the claim form on mse. Some paid out, some I didn't have ppi on, but they will let you know. The most we've got in one payment is just over £2k and I have two or three out there still. Do Not Use A Company Grin

PPaka · 15/09/2014 19:18

Most of the banks have a designated number for ppi claims that can be found on their website.

Just phone them and start the claim.
They're all slightly different with how they found the details.
Mbna told me I had 2 credit cards and a loan I could claim on, I didn't have any details.
I got about £20k with them, another £30k with others( I used to do a lot of balance transfers )

SevenZarkSeven · 15/09/2014 19:27

YY definitely don't use one of those companies the banks have been told to make the process as easy as possible and be super helpful on pain of death. Or at least on pain of more terrible publicity!

raspberryslush · 15/09/2014 20:20

Can you still claim if you haven't got the account details anymore? I had a PPI policy back in 1998 and have moved bank since.

Can anyone tell me (in simple terms) the sort of things that you can claim for please?

Poppyforremembrance · 15/09/2014 20:31

Never bothered with it as my husband said we did not have it- he died last year and I phoned the Halifax just to check- our mortgage was originally with the Leeds but now Halifax - they were so helpful- I couldn't remember much at all- just told them what I knew- had a cheque for £5000 last month..I would phone the bank/building society direct- they will help- don't use a company xxxx

Flipflops7 · 15/09/2014 20:37

My bank refused my request for a refund and denied there had been any PPI on my debts, but a PPI reclaim company soon sorted them out on the compensation. I didn't have any paperwork for that claim.

My mortgage lender fessed up and paid up very quickly.

It's worth asking about any loans, credit cards and other debt IMO.

PPaka · 15/09/2014 20:42

Raspberry- if you had ppi, ie if you paid insurance premiums in case if death/sickness etc, you claim.
In the vast majority of cases customers didn't want or need it, or even weren't aware that they they were paying it, therefore it was mis-sold
It was very dodgy policy- most people would have had life ins or sick pay.
In the case if a credit card- the refund is for the premiums and then they calculate interest on them. Going back years!

AdmitYouKnowImRight · 15/09/2014 20:58

8K

8k

and 7K

Ratbagcatbag · 15/09/2014 21:04

Op. I rang Barclays to see if I had ppi on loans from over twelve years ago. They told me I had two I could claim against (only thought one). They sent me paperwork. It was laughable the lack of detail I put in. I sent it off thinking oh well, worth a shot. £1300, I got back. £1300 for most of the boxes filled "don't remember".

Do not use a company to do it.

Luciferbox · 15/09/2014 21:05

My bank contacted me, they gave me 7K back.

SevenZarkSeven · 15/09/2014 21:10

The FSA were considering putting the onus on the banks to contact all customers and tell them all about it and how to claim.

Banks narrowly avoided that on basis they would be super helpful with the claims they got.

From this thread it seems that has worked. Good.

They shouldn't have done it in the first place, obv.

SwedishEdith · 15/09/2014 21:13

Wow at some of the amounts here. Is there a limit about how far back you can go? I feel I should paid more attention to this but just assumed I'd been savvy and said No to it. But I've no idea really

raspberryslush · 15/09/2014 21:14

ppaka- thanks. I will definitely give it a try then. I have looked at the forms but wasn't sure it would work as I have v little info' about it now.

hallamoo · 15/09/2014 21:14

Am I likely to have had PPI on an old Barclaycard? What mortgages?

hallamoo · 15/09/2014 21:15

Sorry, that should've said 'what about mortgages'.

threepiecesuite · 15/09/2014 21:30

I've found the standard form to fill in, going to go with the 'can't remember' angle as above.
But it won't save and I have no printer so back to square one. Why can't you just email them?

PPaka · 15/09/2014 21:33

Barclaycard- yes
There was ppi on mortgages, but I don't think it was as common.

Just phone them - 3 piece!

MsJupiter · 15/09/2014 22:05

I followed the instructions on money saving expert and got £5k from two bank loans from 15+ years ago that I had no paperwork for. This was a couple of months ago. I was so surprised, I thought I might get a few hundred if anything. Amazing.

BigglesFliesUndone · 16/09/2014 13:10

Received a letter this morning with an offer of £300 from a card I had for a year or so back in 2004, so def worth doing!
