to think that a nest of tables is naff and pointless?

Basically just as above. Why do people have them and what are they used for? When do you suddenly need a couple of extra tiny tables?

yabu
i love mine
they are used for christmas tree in porch
and when guests come over their drinks and nibbles dont have to go on the floor.

We got a set passed on to us when we were furnishing our first house together. One day we might replace them, but honestly they're so useful. One big coffee table in the middle of the room would be hard for everyone to reach at once, and would be knocked flying by kids anyway.

fatlazymummy · 15/09/2014 15:06

I've always had a nest of tables, though they're usually seperate. I don't like larger coffee tables. Mine are antique pine, and I don't give a fuck if other people think they're naff.

JuniperTisane · 15/09/2014 15:11

Ours were rescued from a skip at a house DH was working at. They are incredibly awful. Fake mahogany-stained, old fashioned etc etc.

Don't care. They are too useful to do without.

Trumpton · 15/09/2014 15:15

We have these. MIL always needs one next to her ( special) chair for her cuppa and tissues and glasses...
One is in the right angle between the two sofas with a lamp on it and one at the other end of the big sofa .
Very nice and chunky and not naff IMHO. Smile

Thanks for the replies, good to see more lovers than haters! A week restricted to the settee through illness has led to some rather random ebay purchases. I would've replied earlier, but I had to go out and collect the nest of tables bought for a bargain (I hope) £15 on ebay! The first of my 99p shirts/tops arrived today as well - step away from the laptop Grin

My mum and dad have a nest of tables very useful when we are all around drinking wine!

KERALA1 · 15/09/2014 16:33

Naff. We have them a gift from mil whose taste is rooted firmly in 1972. Her house a celebration of swirling polystyrene ceilings, orangey pine cladding, serving hatches and china ornaments. So bad it's almost good...

grimbletart · 15/09/2014 17:22

Today's edgy fashion is tomorrow's naff. YABU OP.

Fluffyears · 15/09/2014 17:27

My mother has them and the littlest one used to be brought out for my niece when she was a toddler to eat at and draw at. The step that my (short) mum used was used with it as a wee seat. The middle one was beside my dad's chair when his mobility got bad with his medication, drinks, glasses etc.

TattyDevine · 15/09/2014 17:40

I've got those Myakka ones too! They seldom are as a nest. And they are handy when I plonk a guest in my study if the spare room is already full, as I can give them a mini temporary bedside table (for drinks and keys and shit). They are just handy, perhaps not an object of extreme beauty, but definitely not an eyesore...

alemci · 15/09/2014 17:44

the Goodness Gracious me You Tube clip is really funny

Bharat Homes

it talks about Nests of Tables

BellaVita · 15/09/2014 18:03

Mine are like Trumpton's. Not naff at all.

morethanpotatoprints · 15/09/2014 18:09

They are very useful if you don't want a permanent coffee table in front of your settee.
Having several to move around as required is far better. Then you can just leave them together in any place until you need them.
I'd much rather have a nest than one static table. So YABVVVU Smile

PleaseLetMeKeepTheSportsCar · 15/09/2014 18:31

We have a lovely nest of tables, so lovely that I am not allowed to put anything on them...

Sometimes I am allowed to have my cheese and cider plonked on one at the weekend as long as there is a table cloth on top and I use a coaster

KERALA1 · 15/09/2014 18:34

Sorry but they are uber naff! Utterly twee and hyacinth bucket.

rumbelina · 15/09/2014 18:52

We have 60's g-plan ones (bought cheap off ebay) and I love them. We often have 2 out as don't want a big coffee table. [http://www.harrisonantiquefurniture.co.uk/ekmps/shops/timharrison/images/g-plan-nest-of-three-teak-1960-s-retro-coffee-tables-sold-[4]-2468-p.jpg]

JapaneseMargaret · 15/09/2014 18:55

Good for entertaining, and you can definitely get stylish ones.

They're only twee and Hyacinth Bucket if the decor is otherwise twee.

ginzillas · 15/09/2014 19:07

Not naff at all! We were given am old pine set by MIL and I've tarted them up in contrasting shades of Annie Sloan paint (smallest one is Mustard Yellow, middle one is Paris Grey and largest one is Old White). I'm dead proud of them and my toddler has claimed the little yellow one as her own. She looks very cute eating her breakfast at it.

Melawen · 15/09/2014 19:09

I quite like them and would have a set myself if I had room for it. But someone I know (naming NO names!) has a very spindly set, so much so that I am always in fear of knocking my tea and cake over when I visit.

glidingpig · 15/09/2014 19:12

Our (extremely useful) nest of tables aren't what I'd choose if I was buying some. Mahogany stain and a bit twiddly. But then our house is not exactly a show home, our furniture is half hand-me-down and half IKEA, I can count five different shades of wood from where I'm sitting, and to be honest that's also how most of my friends live. It's a scruffy hodge podge and it's definitely not Hyacinth Bucket.

I know so few people who could afford to write off a practical space saving solution on the grounds of naffness!

merrymouse · 15/09/2014 19:18

My mum has the ones my granny used to have. I think they look fashionably retro. Great for tea parties and small children who need small tables.

KERALA1 · 15/09/2014 20:55

Definitely think hostess trollies should make a come back. They are in the same vein as these tables so why not?!

ithoughtofitfirst · 15/09/2014 21:01

Oh my god YES kerala

AliceDoesntLiveHereAnymore · 15/09/2014 21:01

Ours get used all the time. The middle one is currently being held hostage used by my 5yo as a chair for his desk in his bedroom. I tried to get it back to the living room, but he insisted it was the perfect height for him to sit on. Hmm
