to think that constant sniffing is the single most irritating sound in the world and to threaten DH with divorce if he doesn't blow his bloody nose?

Well, am I? I defy anyone to sit and listen to this without wanting to rugby tackle him with a tissue and instruct him to 'blow' as though we were a toddler. Angry

My toddler, incidentally, will happily blow her nose.

He, not we. I'm so driven to distraction that I can't type.

OK, I'll be first.

soaccidentprone · 14/09/2014 14:08

Try a clothes peg?

LividofLondon · 14/09/2014 14:15

Have you asked him to stop sniffing? Maybe it's a habit he doesn't realise he has and is unaware how irritating it is? Failing that perhaps you could record it and play it back to him; maybe he'll hear for himself just how bad it is then.

SquirrelledAway · 14/09/2014 14:20

But you'll always know exactly where he is in the house / supermarket / pub by the loud sniff every 45 seconds.

SixImpossible · 14/09/2014 14:23

I just silently hand my dh a tissue.

Took about 10y, but eventually he learned to get a tissue himself. But he'll still rather sniff through, say, a football match until half-time, and only then get a tissue.

AntoinetteCosway · 14/09/2014 14:24

I've told him it's annoying and asked him nicely to blow his nose. He is too busy/involved in something else/I can't help it/stop nagging/blah blah blah.

RAGE.

Disclaimer: we have a newborn and I am ill so we are both knackered. He isn't normally this annoying.

treaclesoda · 14/09/2014 14:25

yes, yes it is. Closely followed by incessant throat clearing.

ithoughtofitfirst · 14/09/2014 14:26

My dh holds his breath for about 30 seconds then does a massive exhale like a person who is really pissed off about something. Took me about 2 years to not be completely paranoid that i'd done something wrong. Everything ok? Yeah, just a big breath. Oh ok... cool.

hackmum · 14/09/2014 15:00

Why do people do this? I get this on the train sometimes and I really desperately want to hand the person a hanky or a box of tissues. Can it be really so fucking difficult to wipe/blow your nose rather than sniff? Or are people so forgetful that they find it impossible to remember to take some tissues out with them in the morning?

FatherDickByrne · 14/09/2014 15:01

Constant coughing gets my vote.

Plastictree · 14/09/2014 15:04

Papping when eating, 12 years and no further forward, I fear this is a battle I am never going to win basically because he STILL doesn't realise he's doing it.

ithoughtofitfirst · 14/09/2014 15:08

Eurgh sloppy slappy slurpy noises when you're eating. How can a person not know that they're doing it? My dad would have smacked me over the back of head for doing it.

MrsItsNoworNotatAll · 14/09/2014 15:21

Dd1 does this and it drives me insane. I tell her to get a tissue and remove all bogies that are blocking her hooter so she can breathe properly instead of sniffing away and making me heave!

fatherdickbyrne I'm afraid I'm guilty of constant coughing when I have a bad cold. I annoy myself as much as I would you. But any other time I so hear you!

Gruntfuttock · 14/09/2014 15:23

Papping? Confused

pinkrose1 · 14/09/2014 15:24

DH sniffs when he eats hot food. Try eating and listening to someone sniffing Angry

Billben · 14/09/2014 15:28

Totally agree, so irritating.

MrsItsNoworNotatAll · 14/09/2014 15:29

Oooh I used to work with a bloke who thought nothing of blowing his nose loudly in the canteen whilst everyone was eating. It would be really quiet then you'd hear him. And he'd use a cotton handkerchief instead of a disposable one and put it back in his pocket.

Christ I hate humans!

AntoinetteCosway · 14/09/2014 15:33

'Christ I hate humans!'

pretty much sums up how I feel today too!

OP posts:
Gruntfuttock · 14/09/2014 15:36

Ah shut up you .....human you! Angry

I'm so sick of humans I'm thinking of going back to my home planet!

morerogermore · 14/09/2014 15:37

mine does it and I find it hideous.

YANBU

AmITwirly · 14/09/2014 15:37

Does he do it all the time or is it just when he has a cold/runny nose? If the latter, then YANBU, because everyone can and should learn to blow their noses when they need to.

However, if he sniffs all the time, it could be a tic, which is an involuntary thing just like sneezing and cannot be controlled. Some people clear their throats all the time or blink excessively and these are tics too (albeit at the mild end of the tic spectrum).

As someone who has had tics myself, I can assure you they are just as maddening for the person who has them as anyone around them. I knew what I was doing was disgusting/aggravating, but I just could not stop them.

pippinleaf · 14/09/2014 15:38

You're wrong. The most awful noise is someone with a blocked nose eating a banana. It drives me to think murderous thoughts.

Gruntfuttock · 14/09/2014 15:42

"Some people clear their throats all the time"

Don't I know it! My mother will be arriving here any minute and she does it all the bleepin' time! It makes my daughter feel murderous and it drives me further up the wall too,

dementedma · 14/09/2014 15:45

I see your sniffi g and raise you.....hiccups! I think I really really could murder someone with hiccups.
