AIBU to ask work to pay for

A new pair of trousers.

I work in a restaurant.
The other night I took out one of the bins from the bar at closing time.
Few minutes later I noticed my pants at the top had a huge red stain on them which was going white & realised it was from bleach. Now they're totally unwearable. Someone, probably the bar manager had poured a load of bleach into the bottom of the bin & then put the liner on top. No one ever puts bleach in the bottom usually hence why I wasn't wary of it. Someone else mentioned the next day it had happened to them too.

Would I be unreasonable to buy a new pair of pants and give the recipept to the manager asking if they could pay for them? We have to pay for all our own uniform apart from shirts.
Or shall I just forget about it and just see it as an accident & just one hazard that could happen.

Nothing wrong with asking. However, are the bins used only by the restaurant or can they be accessed by the public? If publicly accessible your manager could try and say that anyone had put the bleach in there.

I think you need to raise this with someone
There should be safe working practices and having bleach in the bottom if a bin is not safe

YouWakeUpFlawless · 14/09/2014 11:20

No they're only bins that staff can use, under the bar.
Someone had tried to be hygienic by putting it at the bottom as it gets so disgusting under them, but it's not worked out

I'd ask for them to be paid for. It was stupid to leave bleach in the bottom of the bin.

ScarlettInSpace · 14/09/2014 11:26

My workplace paid to replace my trousers once, I was making a coffee in the kitchenette & the cleaner had used bleach on the work too & not wiped it off properly.

The worst they can do is say no, it doesn't hurt to ask!

Plus if they are made aware, they can make sure it doesn't happen again...

Featherbag · 14/09/2014 11:28

I'd ask them to pay, but if they refused I'd wear the bleached trousers to work.

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 14/09/2014 11:31

I agree with Featherbag.

hormonalandneedingcheese · 14/09/2014 12:40

YANBU I'd raise it as an issue anyway because bleach can irritate the skin.

hamptoncourt · 14/09/2014 12:41

Yes I would also do what featherbag suggests. They really should pay and if not just wear the bleached trousers.

PorkPieandPickle · 14/09/2014 12:44

I'd ask them to pay, but if they refused I'd wear the bleached trousers to work.

Agree with featherbag

Also agree with hormonal - this is a health and safety issue too- you can't have bleach dripping about off bin bags onto people/objects Confused

YouWakeUpFlawless · 14/09/2014 13:02

Thanks everyone for your opinions! I think I will ask & if they say no say I have no other money and will have to wear the bleached ones!

There should be a coshh ( control of substances harmful to health);sheet for how to store and use chemicals
Bleach can cause asthma, migraine, it can irritate the skin and can be fatal if mixed with other chemicals
People should not be allowed to just chuck it around a workplace without thought for other workers

windchime · 14/09/2014 13:07

I would just colour in the bleached area with a black permanent marker pen but then I was born recycling
