Should owners clean up after cats?

Sillysausage2 · 14/09/2014 00:33

I'm a responsible dog owner and clean up after my dog. Unfortunately I think the scent of my dog attracts cats to my front garden, I watched 2 come and shit in my garden this afternoon! LO plays in the front garden and apparently cat shit is very dangerous, AIBU to be a bit pissed off with this?

Oh right, you're just making all this up. Phew.

TattyDevine · 15/09/2014 13:56

Yay!

IonaMumsnet · 15/09/2014 14:25

Hi folks. Just a quick reminder of our Talk Guidelines. No throwing of buns please. Especially not if they've been in flower beds. You never know WHAT you might accidentally pick up...

Damn it, wish I had got it on video now Grin

splendide · 15/09/2014 14:43

A video of your baby eating cat shit? I suppose that would be quite funny.

FoxSticks · 15/09/2014 14:44

That did make me laugh Splendide!

icanmakeyouicecream · 15/09/2014 14:56

Well yes that would have been good!

cheesepuff I expect cats don't poo on your lawn because you have cats. I don't have cats, my neighbour has two. One of her cats likes to poo out on my lawn. I've seen him do it enough times to know his general toilet area of my garden. I shoo him when I see him but it doesn't seem to deter him. I have a toddler and a crawling baby. It's frustrating to have to be constantly (as in several times a week) move this cat's shit off my lawn to prevent the children from ending up covered in it.
I agree foxes are audacious shitters (they like to shit directly on my children's toys) but my no means do all cats bury their shit. All animal shit is annoying, but this particular shit belongs to someone.

SelfconfessedSpoonyFucker · 15/09/2014 16:10

Can't afford to put up a fence? Don't get a cat. If people with dogs said this then that would be the answer, if you can't control your dog you shouldn't have a dog. There are dog owners who let their animals run around. They are justifiably judged for doing so.

God I love these threads Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin

All my cats shit on my lawn front and back and sometimes in the litter tray. I don't doubt they shit elsewhere as well. Other peoples cats shit in my garden too.. I just can't get myself worked up about it tbh.

ACheesePuff · 15/09/2014 18:46

Since when did fences keep cats in the garden?

Patrickstarisabadbellend · 15/09/2014 18:58

I found a cat shitting in my garden and it didn't have a collar. I took it to the rescue place and the owners got charged £60 for it to be released. Ha!

merrymouse · 15/09/2014 19:08

If you think there should be a law against cats roaming freely, contact your mp and see how far you get.

If you try to poison an animal you are breaking the law and could face prosecution.

YAbU to expect cat owners to clean up after their cats as they will have no idea where they are pooing. However, I think at cat owners should be responsible and train their cats to use a litter tray. Yes, it can be done. No, it might not be easy, but as a mother I have to say that potty training some of my kids wasn't "easy" but I didn't make it an excuse to let them shit wherever took their fancy! That's why it is called "training", it takes effort.

ACheesePuff · 15/09/2014 23:58

Come on then Billy, how do you make a cat choose it's litter tray over the neighbours garden?

My cats have a tray which they used to use when they were too young to go out. Now they are allowed out they much prefer the freshly hoed soil of a garden. They only use the tray when it''s raining and they don't want to go out and get wet, otherwise they can go all day without a wee and wait until I come home and let them outside. They don't always use the neighbours, we have a big garden and they like their own flower beds too!

HesterShaw · 16/09/2014 00:01

Goodness. We haven't had a cat shit thread for a while. What a novelty.

however · 16/09/2014 03:30

Bit harsh LST. Patrick might have saved the cat from being squashed by a car. A civic duty, if you like.

blackcats73 · 16/09/2014 04:15

Mumsnet really is a parallel universe. It's the only place I've heard such anti cat sentiment . Cats have been around since the dawn of time. Living in a society will bring it's downsides as well as upsides. My cat keeps the mouse (and rat) population under control . It tends to shit in my garden but if it roams and shits in someone else's I'm sorry .
Lots of people have lifestyles others may think of as anti social . Some people drive their stupid enormous cars everywhere instead of walking, some people concrete over their gardens looking unsightly and bad for the environment .
Other people have dogs that yap and bounder up to us with their muddy paws,.

Fooking hell some people need to get a life.

LST · 16/09/2014 06:09

however no not harsh at all. What an arsehole thing to do. And it is impossible to make a cat shit in a litter tray if they are outside for 12 hours. Mine shit inside at night and outside in the day. One never uses the litter tray.

Can't afford to put up a fence? Don't get a cat.

My cats nearly fell off the top of the eight foot fence around the garden with laughter on reading this.

Sunna · 16/09/2014 06:47

The local school has fences with anti-climb paint, I wonder if that would work. Anyone tried it?

ACheesePuff · 16/09/2014 07:52

The only fence that would contain a cat would be so unsightly the neighbours would have even more to complain about. its irrelevant really though as luckily I don't live on MN and the neighbours all love cats.

ACheesePuff · 16/09/2014 07:58

It would be better if the cat haters created a sterile bubble for themselves to live in, and they could coat it with tinfoil ensuring no cat will come within 50 yards of it. That way they could avoid all micro-organisms that could contaminate their existence and the soil could be bleached daily so that toddlers could happily eat it unsupervised.
