to want ^Typical English^ tourist spots to have English people serving you?

IwantJoansbag · 13/09/2014 09:20

I expect to get flamed for this and called all-sorts, but I don't care.
I'm genuinely curious.

We went out for the day yesterday and stopped off at 3 well-known English tourist spots.
Glastonbury, Cheddar and Wells. (with a little stop off at a pretty little 'supposedly' English market-garden type place - selling Strawberries, Plums, etc) plus we stopped off at an outlet village.

It just seemed wrong that at EVERY place we stopped we were served by Eastern Europeans. I didn't hear ONE English accent (except in the shops), but all the eateries and stalls.... foreign accents.

If I go to a Beer Festival in Germany, its nice to be served by somebody with a German Accent - it adds to the atmosphere.
If I were to go to New York and eat in China Town - its great if the majority of people are Chinese.
Stopping off in a typical Italian Pizza place and the people are mainly Italian! You expect a bit of authenticity.

So, is it too much to ask the same happens in England?
It must be disappointing for the tourists when they come here.

For the record:- I am ONLY talking about typical tourist spots and I've got nothing against people coming to our country to work, but I think that some places (tourist spots where you expect things to be traditional) they should have mainly English people dealing with the public.

I asked a genuine question. I'm being polite.

you tell me to fuck off rather than answer.

speaks volumes.

LEMmingaround · 13/09/2014 10:50

Would you be happy if they put on a false English accent a la dick van dyke?

Fuck off? Oh dear.

IwantJoansbag · 13/09/2014 10:51

Would you be happy being served by a non-white person, provided they had an English accent?

I would be really happy to be served by a non-white person, if that answers our question..
As for the accent? It's not so much the accent that's a problem.
A lot of people that served us that day couldn't speak English at all (or very little), so there was a real communication problem from both sides.
Which led to poor service, at more than one place.

That was my main bug bear. Obviously it's not the fault of the workers (before somebody tries to jump on me over that)

Sorry dawndonna cross post. I totally agree with that - DH works for the NHS and I don't doubt any of what you're saying.

But even if we assume that a lot of extra people make no strain for the NHS and to be honest I would politely dispute that, it does create issues and problems in other areas - housing is a main one, so is education, so is employment (I don't mean in that daft 'coming over here taking all our jobs sense') I mean that because people from particularly Eastern Europe but also elsewhere ARE prepared to work for such little pay and so on it does erode the working rights of others. How many times has someone said on here 'well maybe they gave the job to that guy from ee because he was prepared to work anti social hours for no extra pay' or whatever.

People being PREPARED to work for a pittance doesn't mean they SHOULD, it shouldn't be common practice.

I am honestly not racist in the slightest, I abhor it. I would never be unkind to anybody even if I did dislike them and I would only dislike somebody for a good reason and where you're born is such a stupid reason for not liking someone! But why can't we say 'we are worried about this'?

your question

OP posts:
apoorna · 13/09/2014 10:53

Maybe it's just me but how does it matter what accent they speak in, as long as they speak good English and more importantly, serve you?

insancerre · 13/09/2014 10:53

Op what football team do you support?

IwantJoansbag · 13/09/2014 10:53

Read the post properly.

Fuckoff is the first part of one of the Poster's names (duh)

Perhaps you and your family aren't very good at expressing yourselves and that's why the staff couldn't understand you?

whiskwarrior- perhaps the fuck off was the OP entering into the spirit of the whole Anglo-Saxon thing?

IwantJoansbag · 13/09/2014 10:55

I was replying to one of the posters who's first part of her username is called Foffsomethingorother.
One of the posters is calle fuckoff (and you call ME stupid?).

DrankSangriaInThePark · 13/09/2014 10:56

Duh.

Fuckoff. Not Fuck Off.

That was quite clever of you OP though. I admit grudgingly.

Flipflops7 · 13/09/2014 10:56

I think I know what the OP is getting at. When I am abroad I really like interacting with local people in restaurants etc and it adds to the experience of being in that place. I am also old enough to remember England being like this and how interesting it was as a Londoner (of Irish immigrant parents) to meet proper Yorkshire or Cornish people, for instance.

Now everyone is everywhere in the global village and to me it just makes life a little less interesting - or possibly I mean it makes travel a little less interesting. I would feel the same if I went to Australia or the US and was served by a British person.

Exactly, but some didn't speak good English, some couldn't speak it at all. We had to point to things.

using the opportunity of a cover story to tell us all to fuck off

Aha.

IwantJoansbag · 13/09/2014 10:58

DrankSangria, enjoy talking to yourself.

With your Attitude Problem you are not worth any more replies after this one.
Have a nice day.

I thought op was replying to FuckOffWeasel. Either that or using the opportunity of a cover story to tell us all to fuck off grin

Which one was it? ;)

So why is your OP not about THAT then?

It is mentioned in your OP.

Your OP is about accents and nationality and tradition.

Yep, I pointed that out about 4 pages ago, Arsenic, but the OP ignored me.

IwantJoansbag · 13/09/2014 11:03

Arsenic,

The lack of nationality and tradition was possibly a mild irritation (or dissapointment? I don't know), but it was made worse when we got very poor customer service, because of the people serving us not being able to speak English.

You are right, My orgiginal post is maybe off the mark a bit.
