Ds just started Uni 8km from home.
He is currently cycling with heavy bag . Dh suggested getting him a scooter . I see his point it does tick lots of boxes

I come from quite an anti motorbike family. My kids were never getting one but now ds needs one.

I've just bought a Honda CB500F (bounces up and down with excitment), I'm waiting for the call to say it is ready to collect. I have special boots which add another inch to my leg length - they are invaluable, plus getting the suspension lowered a bit.

Sorry for hijack. Getting very excited.

superbagpuss · 12/09/2014 13:32

sorry for hijack, have set up a bikers thread in chat :-)

Chopstheduck · 12/09/2014 13:42

I really don't think 8k is that far on a bike, and with waterproofs and panniers, it would easily be doable. I wouldn't want my child out on a scooter for such a short distance.

Look at vaude or ortlieb panniers - some are HUGE and I can get the best part of a weekly shop in mine, invest in a good waterproof jacket and if he leaves in plenty of time he shouldn't get all sweaty.

Lally112 · 12/09/2014 13:42

what does he want to do? at 19 I would be asking how it is still up to you? jeezus talk about mollycoddled, I was married with a house and two kids by his aghow is he ever going to stand on his own two feet if he cant even make. e his own transport decisions at 19.

crje · 12/09/2014 13:44

There was supposed to be a grin after not posting comment. Fire away notso .
My phone is refusing to cooperate with new changes.

Anyway, ds is a responsible adult who sweats a lot. He will have after uni activites than mean being a road user after dark.
Prior to this he has used pubic transport but this no longer suits his timetable.

He has complained of the sweating and dh suggested a scooter .
We are all having a think and will chat again

Sorry to all you bike lovers, but if the choice was him riding his bike or buying him a scooter I'd be for the bike. No money of mine will ever, ever go toward funding a scooter/motorcycle for a DC of any age.

Lally112 · 12/09/2014 13:57

crje missing the point, so you were a year older than him when you had him, I'm guessing you too put a roof over your own head by yourself then too, what would your reaction be if your mother was posting on a forum about you at that age as an adult capable of making decisions by yourself? because at 19 if someone was discussing this sort of decision behind my back I would hit the feckin roof. do you wonder if theres some sort of kidsnet somewhere with crje jnr posting AIBU to think my mother should but out of my transport choices since I am a bloody adult???

LatteLoverLovesLattes · 12/09/2014 14:16

Crje - do you know that as soon as your children hit 16 they are adults and you should never do anything for them ever again.

if you listen to some odd posters on MN
Grin

How about a small car instead? Much nicer in the winter and it doesn't need to cost a lot?

Hakluyt · 12/09/2014 14:19

"I was married with a house and two kids by his aghow"

Just because you made crap decisions as a teenager doesn't man everybody does! Grin

PrimalLass · 12/09/2014 14:23
