Aaaaaarrrrgggghh itchy foof and went to chemist but as I'm obviously pregnant I can't buy any. I tried to get appointment at GP but can't get one until 24th!

I have been prescribed it at least 3 times during the last 30 weeks so know what's wrong, why won't the nasty man at Boots not sell me any canasten?!

supermarket.

NormHonal · 12/09/2014 11:05

Send a friend or say you are buying it for a friend? My lovely pharmacist has a couple of times saved me trips to the GP by winking and saying "but of course this is for you, not for your child, correct Madam?" (this is for eye drops and hydrocortisone cream, BTW).

A friend who is a medical professional has assured me it's fine for me to use these on my child and it's only what the GP will prescribe anyway after waiting a week for an appointment.

Pico2 · 12/09/2014 11:05

Send your OH to the pharmacy. Tell the pharmacy it's for someone else. Order it from the internet. Lots of options.

Teddybeau1988 · 12/09/2014 11:08

Have you got a friend who can buy it for you?

Or any walk in midwife clinics nearby who can issue prescriptions?

DoJo · 12/09/2014 11:08

Yogurt?

Teddybeau1988 · 12/09/2014 11:08

Or natural yoghurt?

Teddybeau1988 · 12/09/2014 11:08

Great minds think alike dojo lol

Thebodyloveschocolateandwine · 12/09/2014 11:09

Of course you can get it. Just don't say it's got you. Dh and athletes foot. Supermarket.

Sympathy op. All you need now is cystitis and you have the treble. Confused

PopcornFrenzy · 12/09/2014 11:10

Have spoken to my lovely neighbour and she's going to pick some up for me. Note to self...keep a little stash for emergencies!

DinoSnores · 12/09/2014 11:12

That is ridiculous! My pharmacist has had no issues with giving it to me at all, so you have my sympathy and just how awful it is!

Will your GP surgery do telephone consultations or could you leave a message for one of the GPs as they are likely to just do the prescription over the phone?

Otherwise, I'd just send a friend/DH in to get it. Obviously you shouldn't use the oral tablets but the cream is just fine.

Noodledoodledoo · 12/09/2014 11:20

I feel your pain - I had the same at about 28 weeks - had thrush developing and also reacted badly to an insect bite.

I always react badly to insect bites, most years I take anti histamine but decided not to this summer as pregnant and not in insecty areas as much as normal. Got bitten at School Prom of all places! All I wanted was some canesten and anthisan cream no go from pharmacist at Tesco.

Ended up being a 2 and half hour round trip to OOH doctor to get a prescription for both! ARGH

deakymom · 12/09/2014 13:13

if you have had it prescribed before they will usually prescribe it again without seeing you just ring and ask the receptionist at the doctors

or send in a friend

steff13 · 12/09/2014 13:49

Ok, if i understand, you're pregnant, you have a yeast infection, and the pharmacist wouldn't sell you any cream to treat it. What business is it of his? Do you have to buy it from a pharmacist? All that stuff is available OTC here, do you have to have a prescription?

TondelayoSchwarzkopf · 12/09/2014 13:52

Go to Superdrug, pick up from shelves, take to teenager at till.

PopcornFrenzy · 12/09/2014 13:53

it seems that yes you have to have a prescription, I have moved and changed my drs so new drs have no idea what old drs prescribed.

Thrush is such a miserable thing to have, isn't it?

gamerchick · 12/09/2014 13:54

I always lie for over the counter stuff at chemists if there's a tiny chance they would refuse to sell me whatever it is. I'm sure they get a kick out of it sometimes.

LittlePeasMummy1 · 12/09/2014 13:55

Here is a leaflet, it is the recommended treatment for thrush in pregnancy. Might help to show the pharmacist.

DieDeutschLehrerin · 12/09/2014 14:01

Weird. I'm 38wks and bought some from Boots last week complete with enormous bump. I'm on prophylactic Anti biotics so it's essential atm. If in doubt though I go to Sainsbury's and take it through the self service til. Even internal stuff as have been prescribed this before, although not in last 3wks in case of labour starting.

PinkAndBlueBedtimeBears · 12/09/2014 14:03

My dp bought mine for me when I was pregnant, I would have broken down if a pharmacist refused to sell it to me- it's horrid :(

Also, the pessary is also safe to use, but just push it inside with your finger- not the applicator. (As advised by my doctor when I was 40+10 and in tears over thrush!!)

ToniWol · 12/09/2014 14:15

If it's any consolation I had a much dafter encounter with the pharmacist when I went to get my first prescription of aspirin which the midwife had recommended. I'd asked the GP to write that I was pregnant on the script so I didn't have to pay as exemption cert hadn't arrived, and he did. The pharmacist then started going on about how I shouldn't take aspirin during pregnancy. I explained that it had been recommended based on NICE guidelines which I'd been looking up on the web. His response - well you shouldn't believe everything you read on the internet. I paused - pointed out that this was on the official website of the National Institute of Clinical Excellence and offered to show him the page - I did and he then condescended to give me the tablets...

What amazed me was the fact he was questioning a prescription where the GP obviously knew I was pregnant.

PopcornFrenzy · 12/09/2014 14:20

I'm sure it's some crazy power trip but it doesn't help my itchy foof...

OP posts:
DinoSnores · 12/09/2014 14:21

(Just an aside about the exemption certificate not having arrived. You still don't need to pay as the certificate is backdated by a month. The pharmacist will just tick a box to say that evidence has not been seen, so someone then elsewhere will check that against the list of certificate holders.)

essexisnotallitseems · 12/09/2014 14:22

Are you sure it's thrush?

An active Groups B strep infection can feel very similar (sore, walking like John Wayne, feeling knackered).

You might want to ask for a midwife appointment and have a swab done to be sure - you may need antibiotics rather than Canestan

ToniWol · 12/09/2014 16:54

Thanks Dino - it arrived shortly after that. It was just pointing out that the GP obviously knew he was prescribing Aspirin whilst I was pregnant and the pharmacist still questioned it!

Bue · 12/09/2014 16:58

The cream and the pessaries are both safe and widely used in pregnancy. It's only the oral tablet that is contraindicated. Did you actually speak to the pharmacist? If so, find another one who knows what they're doing or get a prescription from your GP!
