to listen to year 6 girls talking about bfs and sex

Im not quite sure why Im so shocked but I am. In park after school a group of years 6 girls from kids school were sat under the climbing frame having a very giggly conversation about one of their bfs, one girl asked if he had a big one and heard "poking" mentioned. I felt uncomfortable listening to them they look so young to be talking like that in the same uniform as what my little ones had on.

It dawned on me that my eldest dd would be in year 6 in another 2 years Shock very scary thought. I know a lot of girls just show off in front of their friends etc. Just another reminder kids are growing up so much quicker these days Sad

Year six?

Bulbasaur · 10/09/2014 18:07

LOL We were talking about that at 8 years old. It didn't mean anything, and we really had no clue what we were talking about. One of the rumors was if a boy peed in you, you would die. We were just repeating what we heard from older girls at summer camp. None of us ended up sleeping around.

They're mimicking the older children. Hopefully they're getting clear sex ed and talks at home to make sure they don't do anything stupid.

ScrambledeggLDCcakeBOAK · 10/09/2014 18:08

6 years old as in the year after 5!

EBearhug · 10/09/2014 18:10

Surely year 6, which is age 10-11?

phantomnamechanger · 10/09/2014 18:15

I have DDs now in Y8 and Y10 and NONE of their friends spoke like that in Y6! we had craft parties and sleepovers etc and they were physically maturing (some very well developed in terms of boobs and periods but not emotionally ready for serious bfs, the odd one or 2 would have date at the cinema on a Saturday, with both parties being picked up by their mummies!)

Then again, the primary I taught at, I heard 8yos debating whether a bf was a real bf if you did not shag him. Yes at EIGHT YEARS OLD Sad

WorraLiberty · 10/09/2014 18:25

'Poking' was probably Facebook related

derektheladyhamster · 10/09/2014 18:28

I remember talking like this in yr6, we all had boyfriends and French kissed!! (more at the end of yr 6 rather than the beginning though!)

seasavage · 10/09/2014 18:32

I remember being laughed at age 9 for not knowing what a period was and not having a boyfriend. It was assumed because I wore a bra at that age I should know.

RahRahRasputin · 10/09/2014 18:47

In year 6 there was this ongoing innuendo about pencils and pencil sharpeners (sort of linked to condoms being called rubbers, I think?). Boys would ask if they could sharpen their pencil in your sharpener, that sort of thing. One used to hold his pencil by his flies like an erection and poke girls with it Hmm

There was also a rumour that a local boy (only a year older than us, so hopefully not true Confused) had had a blow job. Someone had obviously got their wires crossed as we all thought it was similar to a boob job to make your willy bigger, involving blowing it up with some sort of hair dryer type device! Grin

Anyway, kids do talk about these things. It doesn't mean they're doing it, although sadly a minority probably are. They think it is cool and grown up. In part it probably is due to the sexualisation of our whole culture, but it is also fairly natural and probably similar to how children have been for years.

RahRahRasputin · 10/09/2014 18:48

WTF, why has hair dryer turned into a link to an actual hair dryer?! Confused

crazylady321 · 10/09/2014 18:48

Yes meant year 6 not 6 years old, I honestly cant remember what I was like at that age. They were talking like 18 year olds sounded so confident aswell.

Im not been a prude I know some talk like that and some mature more than others it was just a wake up call i think for the fact that my dd will be talking like that at some point in the near future

Oh, that sounds a bit different to what I was imagining Sad maybe they are just really "mature", although not in a good way. A few girls really were having sex in Year 7. They were from different primary schools so no idea what they were like in Year 6, but in Year 7 they were more confident than I was in Year 11.

Fairylea · 10/09/2014 18:59

I think it depends on the area you live in as well to be honest. I grew up in quite a rough part of south London and there were certainly girls in my class at age 10/11/12 who seemed like today's 15+. And that was a long time ago - 1991 ish.

But we now live in south norfolk and dd is 11 and her and her friends are quite young compared to me at that age if anything. I've accidentally overhead them talking and yes they do talk about boys etc but it's all very "he fancies you.... urrgghh you want to kiss him.. no I don't! !! Urrggh" that sort of thing.

They do know a LOT about sex though and I've always been very open with dd and answered any questions but I think that's a good thing.

poolomoomon · 10/09/2014 19:03

I had a boyfriend in Y6. I'll never forget him, 'twas oh so very serious Grin. He's in prison now which is a shame, he had a really rough ride growing up and was orphaned Sad. Felt ever so sad when I heard he was in prison, for a petty crime mind. My first BF wasn't a serial killer... We got told off by teachers on numerous occasions for kissing and holding hands on school grounds constantly. We couldn't be parted. There was also very grown up conversations amongst friends about 'poking' and such forth. A lot of it came from one of my friends older friends she played with on her street. None of us actually did any of the acts we were talking about at 11... We just wanted to act and be 16. I don't think we even fully understood what half of it meant.

It's frightening to hear but they will soon be in secondary school and it only gets worse from there on out Wink. Rest assured I'm sure they're not actually being 'poked' except on FB.

MrsPatrickDempsey · 10/09/2014 19:03

In year 6 my DD was asked if she knew what a blow job was. I still faint when I think about it. She is in yr8 now and on Friday we had a very explicit discussion about male and female circumcision!

crazylady321 · 10/09/2014 22:06

My dd asked me if any of my ex boyfriends had a big willy! She's 6! [ shock]

Fairylea · 10/09/2014 22:34

I think possibly some of the most detailed conversations I've had with my dd include her asking how gay people (both men and women) have sex and why (as she thought having sex was purely only if you wanted a baby) and also what a dildo is (obviously heard that one at school)! I've tried to answer both questions as honestly as I can :) if they're old enough to ask the question I think they're old enough to know the answer :)

crazylady321 · 10/09/2014 22:39

Im lucky not really had any awkward conversations yet apart from the usual about babies etc but im more than happy to be open about that

My Y7 dd and her friends have had boyfriends at school. It's pretty innocent stuff - most of them haven't got beyond handholding or a peck on the cheek. They rarely see each other out of school and if they do it is in a group.

What you heard may have been bravado talking....

Username12345 · 11/09/2014 01:49

If you were shocked by that you should hear what was said in the classrooms when I was in year 6. Completely scandalous and was probably made up Wink

Morloth · 11/09/2014 05:59

I think it definitely depends on where you are.

I grew up in a very 'rough' area and we were much 'older' at 10 than the 10 year olds I know now in a 'naice' area.

DS1 is 10 and he still a dippy little boy and most of his mates seem the same.
