Where is reasonable to be expected to pick up dog poo

DollyMixture99 · 09/09/2014 07:42

I'm a bit of a dog poo fiend and I get very irate when people don't pick up after their dogs, particularly on paths.

I pick up on paths and all grass verges/fields (anywhere people are likely to walk). However my dog is a wanderer and is often in a bush/under a hedge/in the middle of a load of nettles, so in these circumstances I don't go crawling under the hedge to pick up the poo (which is under the hedge) AIBU?

Anywhere that someone could stand in it, pick it up. I wouldn't be crawling under bushes to retrieve steaming deposits!

poolomoomon · 09/09/2014 07:48

Nobody can stand in it so yanbu.

lanbro · 09/09/2014 07:49

I would say anywhere you are able to pick it up you should, as anyone else would be easily able to stand in it. What you're doingiisn't unreasonable at all.

ExitPursuedByAKoalaBear · 09/09/2014 07:50

Me neither. But some will say you should keep your dog on a lead so you can always access the poo.

comfycushion · 09/09/2014 07:51

If you can see it you pick it up.

CMOTDibbler · 09/09/2014 07:52

In nettles/overgrown ditches/really thick bushes in an area children wouldn't be expected to be playing. Everywhere else I pick up and put it in my dicky bag till I get to a bin later

DollyMixture99 · 09/09/2014 07:54

CMO you reminded me, worse then the people who don't pick it up are the people who pick it up and then leave the bag lying around or worse, hung on a tree Angry

Catsmamma · 09/09/2014 07:54

If I can reach it or see it I bag it.

One of mine used to like to go off piste...particularly in gorse bushes or her favourite was to squat in ankle deep sea and let go.

Mostly current dogsboys go before we leave the garden, but if they run off into the field and I lose sight of it then there it stays.

DejaVuAllOverAgain · 09/09/2014 07:58

I hate it when people do that and quite a few do it where I walk Deja dog Angry What makes it worse is there are dog bins at all four exits/entrances.

I agree that you pick up dog poo when you are able to. I don't go crawling through bushes/nettles either.

DogCalledRudis · 09/09/2014 08:02

Well, in the bushes i wouldn't go either. Or in very tall grass. Or when its runny.

littlewhitebag · 09/09/2014 08:05

Mine likes to go on steep slopes covered in gorse and nettles. No way would i be going to retrieve poo from there. If she poo's where i can see it and reach it then i pick it up. I also hate abandoned poo's in bags.

vdbfamily · 09/09/2014 08:06

if it is in vegetation,it will break down far quicker than if you put it in a plastic bag and let it fester in landfill for years.I agree that the most idiotic thing is to put it in a bag and hang it on a tree!! I'm with the stick and flick brigade. Take a stick and flick it off the path into a hedge or somewhere no-one is walking...it can then fertilize the ground and be reabsorbed, like all the other 'wild' poo !!!

Abra1d · 09/09/2014 08:06

In our rural area we leave poo if it's, for example, deposited in the middle of a ploughed field over which foxes/badgers/deer, etc, walk anyway. Otherwise we try and flick it off into brambles/ditch/somewhere it cannot be any problem to anyone. Bags, I think, should only be used if you have to. What's the point of a load of (often) non-biodegradable bags of poo being dug into land-fill? Environmentally it makes no sense.

Obviously in the village itself we use bags.

Basically it's about consideration for other people, isn't it? Is there any chance they or their children or dogs will stand in it/smell it/be offended by it? The way you respond to this depends where you are.

HappyAgainOneDay · 09/09/2014 08:17

I'm by no means a dog lover so am in strong favour of dog poo being picked up. The poo bags might well be non-biodegradable but at least if the poo is picked up and removed to landfill sites, poo-related disease is less prevalent.

As for leaving the poo in fields and other open areas, don't children play in places like that? I used to. Generally, children are trained to hold their poo until they reach a toilet. Dogs are trainable and 'ask' to be let out of the house to pee so can't they be trained to let you know when they want a poo? Then they won't poo in nettles or under bushes so it's unpickupable and you can take them to a suitable spot where you can pick up their disgusting muck deposit.

MidniteScribbler · 09/09/2014 08:39

It's astonishing how people can make a justification for being lazy twats.

ender · 09/09/2014 08:58

Its never reasonable to not pick up dog poo IMHO. It stinks even if its in the middle of a thick bush or nettles. People let their dogs poo where they want in the woods and lovely summer walks are ruined by the stench. Also someone may end up putting their hand in it looking for a lost ball . Either make sure dog poos at home, not that difficult as most owners know when their dog is likely to go, or keep dog on lead until it goes then pick up.
Saying that its better for poo to rot down naturally, rather than stay in a plastic bag in landfill is just an excuse for being lazy IMHO.
Use biodegradable poo bags.

Dunkling · 09/09/2014 09:05

Everywhere.

Paths, pavements, parks are a given, but my daily walk with my goldie is around a farmers field. The well taken path is littered with dog cr@p, but just because I am also a dog walker taking the same route doesn't mean I still want dog poo on my shoes. I still pick up on farm land and open moors etc, mainly because of the reason above, but also because while this land I walk is crops at the moment, it is still someone elses land and it could also one day be used for his livestock. Same goes for moors etc and livestock on those. Dog poo is a carrier of a bacteria that causes miscarriage in cows.

KnackeredMuchly · 09/09/2014 09:05

Yanbu - but it could cause problems when other dogs sniff it out and eat it.

un fortunately my dog is a public pooer, always in a very convenient and embarrassing place for me to pick up.

All dog poo should be picked up. If it is liquid it should be wiped up. It's just one of the responsibilities you take on as a ddof owner.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 09/09/2014 10:16

dog owner

BramwellBrown · 09/09/2014 10:21

I pick up poo from wherever my dog has decided to do it, he is a very big dog so doesn't get into bushes where I can't reach but the bastard does like to poo in stinging nettles and i have stung my arms so many times picking up after him.

Which makes me wonder, are dogs bottoms immune to sting nettles? or does he find it so funny watching me get his poo out the stinging nettles that he just puts up with a stung bottom?

sparechange · 09/09/2014 10:42

2 things...

You can easily buy biodegradable poo bags. In fact, I can't remember the last time I saw bags for sale that weren't biodegradable. I know some people prefer to use old supermarket carrier bags etc, but if you want composting bags, they are easy to get hold of.

Dog (and other carnivore) poo is not the same as the poo from grass-eating farm animals, so just because there is cow/sheep/horse poo in a field doesn't give anyone a green light to leave their dog poo.

But that said, there are far worse things than dog poo lurking in a lot of the bushes and scrub land in some of the parks near me, so I will not pick it up from anywhere where I can't see exactly I'm picking up

CalamitouslyWrong · 09/09/2014 10:47

I'm in the 'you choose to have a dog, you get to clean up shit even when it's inconveniently situated' camp. It's silly to compare it to fox poo because foxes are wild animals with no owners; dogs do have owners. There's nothing we can do about wild shit, but pet shit should always be picked up.

ender · 09/09/2014 13:33

OP - if your dog wanders off and poos in inaccessible places you can train him not to. Keep him on a lead until he goes, he'll soon learn that a poo is rewarded by being allowed off lead Smile.
