To ask what the extra powers are?

Been watching rolling news for about six hours (I know) about these fabled new powers gordon brown is proposing a timetable for. Apparently better together have been offering them all along. Nobody seems to know what they are. Would it be very cynical of me to suggest that Scotland is getting hee haw in the event of a returned no vote?

Thefishewife · 08/09/2014 20:53

Like jersery type think they have their own tax raising powers

Personally I don't think this should be offered

Let Scotland leave and have the euro see who that works out for them

BakerStreetSaxRift · 08/09/2014 20:57

Well, with a Yes vote they'll have all the power over nothing, which wouldn't be much better.

Bit like being the Mayor of Munchkinland.

JennyPiccolo · 08/09/2014 20:58

That seems very anti-democracy, but I suspect the government gives about as much of a shit about the people of Scotland.

But do you trust any politician? I wouldn't trust any promises by the main parties re Scotland if a no vote was delivered.

JennyPiccolo · 08/09/2014 21:07

I do sort of trust the SNP yeah, but not unconditionally. There are some right choobs in the party but by and large I feel like they're mostly sincere. It was never a credible career move to be involved in non labour scottish politics up till recently so I think they're less power hungry than most.

The other thing is, there's no accountability for government just now at Westminster. For example, proposing more powers during purdah period. Illegal, but bugger all to be done about it. There would at least be a constitution to regulate government if we were independent.

Invisibility and freeze rays probably.

saoirse31 · 08/09/2014 21:09

So tories think yes vote has chance of winning... I think this promise of more powers may backfire... under two weeks to referendum and this is announced now?

That being the case if I was scottish I wouldnt believe in any case in what they promise being delivered after a no vote..

Seem to me that cameron is now realising that he might be remembered mainly for starting the breakbup of the uk.

Janethegirl · 08/09/2014 21:12

My concern is that Labour need a no vote , else they stand very little chance of getting power at Westminster as Scotland is much more pro labour.

Janethegirl · 08/09/2014 21:13

Equally a yes vote is likely to give Cameron an overall majority at Westminster.

Thefishewife · 08/09/2014 21:20

Ed is shitting his pants right now even if he won the election with the departure of the Scottish MPs he would be a lame duck and would not any any of his policy's through

I don't mind and am actually thankfull to the Scott's if a yes vote we won't have to suffer a leftie ananda for many years thank god

londonrach · 08/09/2014 21:23

I'd ask for power of flight. Save so much time... Just asked hubby Nd he asked for the power to cure people... Think he nicer person than me..

Thanks fishewife. A lot of us in scotland don't want devolution and attitudes like yours don't help. A lot of scottish people are worried about what will happen if its a yes vote. We're not all flying the flag for independance and people like you who are waiting and hoping for disaster should think about the whole picture.

JennyPiccolo · 09/09/2014 09:21

It's funny you're annoyed at fishwife and not at any of the elected officials who are paid hundreds of thousands of pounds to represent you, who are all saying the same thing.

P.s. We already have devolution.

OP posts:
chocolatemademefat · 09/09/2014 15:04

Sorry Jenny I used the wrong term. I'm not annoyed at Fishewife at all. I'm concerned that people forget there are a lot of people in scotland who do not want the yes vote and we seem to be forgotten.

In scotland the news is full of the yes campaign. My children (in their 20's) both live in england and I want to belong to the same country as they do. That's obviously not my only reason for voting no. There will always be elected officials paid a lot of money no matter which way the vote goes. I can't spend my life being annoyed about that.

OldLadyKnowsSomething · 09/09/2014 15:14

No new powers, and nothing guaranteed.

ghostland · 09/09/2014 15:20

I guess they will do an Ireland and just keep bribing them changing what is on offer until the Scots vote in the way those that those that know best want them to. How about free fluffy kittens to all Scots. That's sure to be a vote winner!

ghostland · 09/09/2014 15:24

My concern is that Labour need a no vote , else they stand very little chance of getting power at Westminster as Scotland is much more pro labour.

Pretty sure this has been proved to be untrue. Old article and by a very lefty paper but www.newstatesman.com/politics/2013/11/why-scottish-independence-wouldnt-mean-permanent-majority-tories

LurkingHusband · 09/09/2014 15:28

I suspect a Yes vote will destroy the existing political landscape of the rUK forever.

  1. I can't see Cameron staying as Tory leader - how could he lead them into the 2015 election as the man who lost the Union ?

  2. A yes vote will trigger an "us too" movement. In England - i.e. a gift to UKIP.

  3. 2015 election will be a free-for all, and I suspect (and may yet flutter on :) ) we'll end up with no two parties being able to form a majority. Interesting times.

TheTruffleHunter · 09/09/2014 15:36

Well if the free fish n chip dinners every day for 10 weeks that they offered months ago didn't work, they must be wracking their brains for more patronising ideas. Wasn't it the Westminster powers-that-be who ruled out a devo-max option that Salmond had asked for as a third choice on the ballot paper? They make themselves look less trustworthy by the day, some achievement, really!

APlaceInTheWinter · 09/09/2014 15:47

MrsTerryPratchett you made me Grin

What will we get in the event of a no vote? I'm guessing an extra Orange walk in celebration; patronised by the media as one of the few countries to turn down independence and lot of excuses as to why the 'new' powers aren't going to be offered anymore.

JennyPiccolo · 09/09/2014 19:12

There aren't any new powers, I phoned better together and asked them. There's been no cross party agreement.

OP posts:
TheTruffleHunter · 09/09/2014 19:24

What a surprise!

Janethegirl · 10/09/2014 06:20

ghost consider how many Labour MPs are Scottish and how many are Conservative and you may understand my reasoning.
