To not want Wales to remain in rUK if Scotland votes YES

Handsoff7 · 08/09/2014 16:48

Along as we can all remain in the EU, I struggle to see what we gain from being a tiny part of England (which is what the rest of the world would view rUK as). I'd rather be the 23rd smallest of 30 EU member states (Scotland 20th, England 4th). Yes we'd be a small (and comparatively poor) nation but at least we'd have our own voice.

Not sure about full Welsh independence but I agree that if Scotland go Wales will be governed in some areas by a Westminster government which is very unlike anything the Welsh electorate would have chosen.
Thank goodness some matters are devolved.

deakymom · 08/09/2014 16:53

we can't "remain" in the EU we have to get in again as our own country

hstar1995 · 08/09/2014 16:56

I dont know, it would be better to have more control over our own country, but I think we'd be a lot poorer if we became a seperate country. Would the Welsh government still be able to give students a tuition fee grant for example, for those in university? I think in principle its a great idea but in practice, I don't think it would work

ShakesBootyFlabWobbles · 08/09/2014 17:08

Vote in to the Welsh Assembly whichever political party offers an independence referendum, as the SNP had in its manifesto for Scotland (SNP didn't have devo max option in its manifesto hence didn't get the option in this referendum).

Lots of Scottish voters voted for the SNP in the Scottish Parliament elections in order to get the independence referendum, but they will not be voting for the SNP again if Scotland votes Yes. It was a means to an end.

There is no reason why Wales couldn't be the EU but it may not be automatic and could take a few years to meet the requirements. At least Wales would have seen what happened to an independent Scotland (if there is a yes vote) so would be a bit better prepared.

I would hope Wales would stay, as I do for Scotland. Sad times indeed.

whois · 08/09/2014 17:08

Yeah wales should def go independent. Wales is an even bigger drain on England than Scotland - what does Wales have except for high rainfall? Fuck. All.

Welsh politicians aren't stupid - there is a reason they haven't been calling for independence.

Handsoff7 · 08/09/2014 17:08

Deaky - I know that's what has been said but I've always struggled to understand it. Scotland consists of 5.3m EU citizens who are on average more pro-EU that the rest of the country. Why does leaving England make them no longer EU citizens? I don't think there's a mechanism to kick people out of the EU.

Hstar I think under a permanent Tory government we'll be poorer within the Union too

I'd rather the UK stays as it is, but without Scotland, I think we'd all be better as separate countries.

We'd not necessarily be poorer apart as we'd get more back from the EU as a poorer country and I expect the rUK government will keep cutting spending so any subsidy from London will decrease

I'm happy to stay part of England. I would vote no

prh47bridge · 08/09/2014 17:19

Why does leaving England make them no longer EU citizens?

Because their country would not, initially at least, be part of the EU. The United Kingdom is a member of the EU. Scotland would be a brand new country that was not part of the UK.

The yes campaign says that all independent expert analysis is that Scottish EU membership would be uninterrupted. That is a little optimistic. Most independent experts disagree. And some heads of EU states have been very clear that Scotland cannot expect automatic citizenship of the EU.

Terrierterror · 08/09/2014 17:19

Wales would go to the bottom of the waiting list to join the EU. The handouts wouldn't be great if they did manage to get in, as so many more economically deprived countries have joined.

TheBloodManCometh · 08/09/2014 17:19

Wales isn't a part of the EU - The UK is. Therefore if Wales left the UK, they'd have to reapply to join the EU as a country in their own right.
And they don't just let anyone in, you have to meet lots of criteria though I confess I don't know what that criteria is.

TheBloodManCometh · 08/09/2014 17:20

I'd rather the UK stays as it is, but without Scotland, I think we'd all be better as separate countries

Why?

ShakesBootyFlabWobbles · 08/09/2014 17:23

The UK - England, N Ireland, Wales and Scotland as a union - is in the EU, not England.

Scotland isn't leaving England, it may be leaving the UK. If it does, the UK still remains in the EU as a union of England, Wales and N Ireland.

There is no clear answer as to what is going to happen with Scotland's EU membership. However, there are other EU countries with similar regions wanting independence so there may be resistance to Scotland having automatic entry as it could create an unwanted precedent. But, nobody knows for sure just yet.

VenusRising · 08/09/2014 17:33

Yes, I think Wales might leave the UK.
Then Welsh could be an official EU language, as Irish is now.

But, Ireland would have to have a referendum to see whether Wales could rejoin the EU as its own country, as the Irish will vote on Scotland's "readmission".

I'm interested to see if NI would leave the much reduced UK (England) afterwards, and would it join the Republic, or stay as its own little state?
And would England alone have sterling?

These are interesting times.

Poor old Queenie, it's all falling apart before her very eyes, and only Charles to follow her.....

squoosh · 08/09/2014 17:37

I can't see NI merging with Ireland anytime soon.

Besides, it wouldn’t just be up to NI to decide, the people of Ireland would need to agree to it too. And frankly Ireland can't afford that, not for a long long time.

VenusRising · 08/09/2014 17:39

I agree Grin NI is too expensive!

VivaLeBeaver · 08/09/2014 17:42

Scotland at least has some oil to try and keep their economy going.

Not sure what Wales has to keep their free prescriptions going.

VivaLeBeaver · 08/09/2014 17:43

And I'm all for Scotland, Wales, NI and Cornwall as well if they want to go all leaving.

WooWooOwl · 08/09/2014 17:47

Why does leaving England make them no longer EU citizens?

Scotland can't leave England, it isn't a part of England. It would be leaving the UK to form it's own country, one that has not yet been accepted into the EU.

softlysoftly · 08/09/2014 17:47

I'm in South Wales and we would have to be insane to go independent.

The Valleys etc are dying slowly as it is, we'd have far less chance of survival than Scotland (who I would like to stay).

I'd be hightailing it back to Yorkshire if Wales voted for independence.

SteamTrainsRealAleandOpenFires · 08/09/2014 18:21

I don't know if Wales & Scotland could become "Crown Dependencies"?

WallyBantersJunkBox · 08/09/2014 18:42

I think Wales should become a tax haven, like Switzerland. It's about the same size. They could undercut the Swiss completely. It wasn't so long ago that country was a giant sheep farm. Grin

Then they could stay out of the EU and just run the Schengen agreement. Whilst making a fortune on cross border tax free shopping.

And when the gas and oil have run out, the wave power of the Severn and the wind power of our coastal area will keep the lights on in the Valleys. Wink

It may rain sideways there, but I don't hear many people from the North West complaining when living off the water from Welsh reservoirs. Water will be the currency of the future....as the CEO of Nestle keeps saying. They'll be selling it to you as Welsh liquid gold at a fiver a bottle....

SteamTrainsRealAleandOpenFires · 08/09/2014 19:09

I can't believe people still think Scotland is a drain on England! Why do you think the pound's fallen after a poll said Scotland were to separate? Surely it would go up at the prospect?

Thefishewife · 08/09/2014 20:20

The pound has fallen because the markets bulk at the thought of a independent Scotland
