Stupid car advert

AIBU to think that if you drift across lanes while driving regularly enough to need a special alarm on your car to warn of it you really shouldn't be driving?

This advert with the bloke teaching a lad to go in straight lines is irritating me immensely.

This feature has been around for quite a number of years.

LilithTheKitty · 08/09/2014 09:56

Really? It just seems so unnecessary. Surely a basic requirement for a driving licence is the ability to drive in a straight line. I'd be really worried if I needed an alarm to warn me that I wasn't.

Yes since about 2001. Most manufactures now offer something similar. Not something that happens often but I have caught myself drifting out of lane on occasion.

windchime · 08/09/2014 10:54

I always thought that is someone needs a 'parking alarm' then they should be driving a smaller car. Statements like but I have caught myself drifting out of lane on occasion scare me rigid. Please get off the road if you cannot stay in lane.

LilithTheKitty · 08/09/2014 13:20

That's what I was thinking windchime. If you can't stay in your lane you're a danger to everyone else.

Agreed. If you drift out of lane then learn to drive straight or don't drive. Worst thing ever is overtaking in middle lane of motorway when someone is overtaking you at the same time and someone drifts towards you and there's nowhere you can go!!

Please get off the road if you cannot stay in lane

These devices make it harder for you to change lanes without signalling first. Far too many drivers seem to think that signalling is an optional extra.

Occasionally a driver will get distracted, sometimes by other occupants of the car. This can result in them drifting across a lane unintentionally. Similarly a driver who is starting to get drowsy can drift. I agree that the drowsy driver should get off the road and that we should all concentrate fully on our driving at all times. But I would rather other drivers had this safety feature so that they don't run into me when they get it wrong.

I think you are right, Lilith - but judging by the number of times I see people drifting across the white lines, whilst I am out in the car, there is a significant number of the population who need this function.

When I am Queen of the world, all of them will have their cars taken away.

LilithTheKitty · 08/09/2014 15:26

You have my vote SDTG.

I'm quite happy with my driving abilities thanks windchime - have you never found yourself moving towards the edge of your lane? I certainly have and have caught myself. Imagine if you're not on the ball enough to catch it then I can imagine a buzzer or vibration of the steering wheel is a fairly good warning. Bear in mind that this is catering to the lowest common denominator on the roads which is probably a good idea considering the appalling standard of driving I see daily.

AlpacaLypse · 08/09/2014 15:33

I haven't got this on my car, but I have had the 'rumble' from the ridged line that marks off the hard shoulder, when driving home very late one night, and found to my horror that I couldn't quite remember the last couple of sentences of whatever was on the radio. I opened the window and stopped at the next services for a large coffee!

ramrod757 · 08/09/2014 15:39

These devices make it harder for you to change lanes without signalling first

And that would do my head in to be honest. I deliberately and legitimately cross or straddle white lines where traffic and road conditions dictate I should, without any need to indicate.
