DD had first PE lesson of the year on Friday, came home moaning that it had been dance but because they were short of time teacher had not asked the class to change but had just asked them to take off shoes and socks.

DD couldn't understand why if school uniform was ok how come school shoes weren't as well - I told her to get over it!

I don't think YABU, it's all about parents making children stick to standards - whether or not you agree with them (within reason!!).

Had similar problems with DD regarding PE kit but she really got told to get over it!

'I would have hated being asked to dance bare footed on a floor which other peoples bare feet were all over as a teen'

..didn't you do gymnastics at school?.

northernmumuk · 07/09/2014 17:30

We did dance and gymnastics at school - always in bare feet, never bothered us!

The freedom of barefoot dance and gymnastics was one of the (few) things I liked about PE lessons!

DD doesn't agree though so I can sympathise!

I think it is fair to want to know the reason for a rule and is a natural part of growing up in a society that adapts it's rules and laws as opinions/knowledge change - so explain the reason for the rule and the reasons for rules put in place and the importance of obeying them - part of the reason childreb fight against rules is not understanding the reasons that rules are in place. and we should always question rules that seem wrong as a society which is what we are teaching our dc to be part of.

northernmumuk · 07/09/2014 23:07

From what DD said the reasons were explained - ie shoes and socks (or tights) off to avoid slipping and treading on toes.

Her issue I think was that if school uniform was ok why were school shoes not ok? ie bare feet and school uniform was strange to her.

Thanks Coolas! I think that me and DH think like you!!!

Does anyone think it's unreasonable to expect teenage pupils to take part in dance or gymnastics activities in bare feet?

Sounds like a whole new thread!!

Seeing as professional dancers & vocational dance students take class in bare feet for some genres I don't think it's unreasonable.

The school could of course make them all buy specialist dance shoes fir each genre as my dd has to but that would be being unreasonable for a PE lesson where dance is part of a range of sports.

And even then there are certain classes my dd does barefoot even with ballet, tap, jazz. & street shoes!!
