To wonder why a film has never been made of the story of the Mitford Sisters

(First timer here)...anyway have read a couple of books by/about the Mitfords and am currently reading Letters Between the Sisters, their story is unbelievable, fascinating, etc. As they say - you couldn't make it up. It also exposes the nepotism of the ruling classes that you could still argue exists today (as in Sam Cam et al). It could be made into an epic 3 hour blockbuster me thinks....or may it is just me and my current obsession with the Mitfords....

Oh that is sad. I love Chatsworth so much and she made such big changes with the farm shop, etc.

SweetPea3 · 24/09/2014 15:48

Vale Debo. So sad - the end of an era...

WaroftheRoses · 24/09/2014 16:45

What a shock-to have been reading this thread then find out Debo has died... The end of a fantastic era. Sad

Flipflops7 · 24/09/2014 19:09

RIP Debo.

I love the Mitfords and all their fantastic lives.
A very grand old lady who I gardened for for many years used to live next door Nancy Mitford in London. When we would sit down for our pre lunch sherry (said she was posh ) she would regale tales of her neighbour.
Am going to dig out my old Mitford books now.

Honsandrevels · 24/09/2014 19:22

I've read lots of the Mitford biographies and autobiographies (hence the username!) and can't see how a film could do justice to the story.

I would like to read something that delves a bit deeper into their stories and isn't afraid to be critical. Both Decca and Debo put a rather rose tinted view on their actions. Ditto what I've read about Diana despite the fact she never recounted her fascism.

QueenOfThorns · 24/09/2014 19:24

Such sad news, she was a remarkable lady. I'm going to have to read all my Mitford books again now.

murasaki · 24/09/2014 19:33

You could try David Pryce Jones' bio of Unity - doesn't pull it's punches, but may be out of print by now.

RIP Debo, I too have a Mitford obsession, just reading Wigs on the Green, as it goes.

Sad to see a grande dame pass, truly the end of an era.

Sad stuff. Amazing stuff.

ItsNotEasyBeingGreen · 27/09/2014 07:55

I think in all likelihood there will be something soon... Probably a BBC drama type thing. They were an interesting bunch.

CuttedUpPear · 27/09/2014 07:58

Great thread, love the Mitford stories.

HowsTheSerenity · 27/09/2014 08:28

Who would you cast as the daughters?

ForalltheSaints · 27/09/2014 08:41

I would not wish Oswald Mosley to be glorified in any film made.

ItsNotEasyBeingGreen · 27/09/2014 14:22

What makes you think he'd be 'glorified'?

ignominious · 27/09/2014 14:39

Mme guillotine the sitcom got showed to a paid audience at one point

ignominious · 27/09/2014 14:40

Paying sorry I'm being climbed on

Elmersnewfriend · 10/10/2014 23:45

I know someone asked this ages ago, but I'm currently reading the letters book and just saw it explained in a footnote why Deborah called Nancy "Get On". Apparently it "was an interpretation of the sort of growl that the Mitfords' groom used to greet people with. Deborah took it up as a way of fighting back at her eldest sister."

Sazzle41 · 11/10/2014 20:55

The tv series Love in a Cold Climate about them was a big hit and where .the phrase "The Bolter" is from ! Gosh it must have been early 80's but remember being glued to it and wasnt Judi Dench the mother?
