I'm a contractor (working for x since jan on 9 month contract)
so I know it'll come to an end in the middle of oct.
a couple of months ago X company asked me if I'd go perm. I said yes they said they'd square it with my agency. fine

Now there is Someone who does the same job as me who started at the same time, he has v little experience of the actual job but is perm.
We have a mutal dislike of each other- i think he's an arrogant twat who talks to much- he thinks I'm bossy and female.

During our time at x I took on someone elses job doing the same thing, so in effect i have been doing 2 peoples jobs for the last 4 months

so fast forward to 2 weeks ago the job ad came up I applied. heard nothing

then still nothing...
Someone is doing the interview!!! so at that point i knew i wouldnt get it

so yesterday my agency told me that no i wouldnt be finishing in oct but it would be in 2 weeks. all legal apparently

but it means i have 2 weeks to find a job. LP so really need something

my line manager has just informed me that apparently I didnt get the interview as I expect too much of people- when i ask someone to do something i want it done- this apparently is too direct- FFS

the job market doesnt look great so im going to have to look at housing benefit and job seekers allowance?? fuck!!!!!

aibu to think they could have either told me earlier!! or kept to their contract date???

Sounds like a huge pain in the arse and unfair, but clearly they didn't really value your skills as much as they should if they would rather have someone ineffectual who doesn't upset staff who aren't keen on working.

On the plus side, the news this week has been good for contractors - UK workers are cheaper than their European counterparts, so there could be a lot of foreign businesses trying to recruit workers at the moment. If you can say what sector you work in, someone might have some more targeted suggestions to help you find a new contract at short notice.

I am guessing they thought (wrongly) that it was cheaper to hire new than pay the agency fee. Arseholes.

They sound very disjointed and unfair, but sadly as a contractor you have to get used to the fact there is a possibility that you will be let go of at short notice at some point.

It sounds like you're good at your job but they asked some of the permies and they felt you were too direct or made them look bad because you were too efficient.

I think you're going to have to let it go and deliver as good a job as you can over the next 2 weeks whilst getting your Cv out the door asap and looking for other roles.

I know that. I have been contracting for years but this was the first place I could see myself going perm.
talking with a friend I have realised I can be a soft touch when things work and brutal when necessary. I need to not care about the team and focus on the business. one of my pet hates is when business refer to developers as "resources" but maybe I need to start doing it to.

I have been there I too work in IT as a consultant around London area I have had this done to me a few years back it sucks and it is hard but the market at the moment is quite good so if you get your cv ASAP you should be lucky and get something else

Why not think about the feedback, could you change your management style ? How do you ask people to do things ?
