Nursery fed 11mo DS coco pops

Steelojames · 03/09/2014 15:43

Just collected DS from nursery.
This is his week and he seems to be settling in ok, is harder for me than him I think!!
However I am not very happy with the food they have been feeding him. He has a daily book which tells me his food for day etc, and he had coco pops for breakfast!
I would never feed him that at home! AIBU? Should I say something or wait to see if this continues?
Thanks.

Coco Pops are 37% sugar so why anyone would think they were suitable for anybody a baby to eat for breakfast is beyond me. Nothing pfb about that at all.

Op ignore the sarky comments. You are right to be annoyed.

CarbeDiem · 03/09/2014 16:05

I wouldn't mind if it was once or twice a week but not every day.Like others I'd prefer they got fed porridge or weetabix.
I'd say something too, being responsible for the diet of small children you'd think they'd at least try to keep it as healthy as possible.
Yanbu.

Hurr1cane · 03/09/2014 16:08

I don't even really like DS having coco pops for breakfast and he's 8, although I don't care as much now he's older as a one off, I would have been worried if someone thought that was an appropriate food for him as a baby.

DS eats porridge or weetabix normally. Coco pops if he demands them and nothing else or is at his dads.

Coco pops send him up the wall a bit but I don't mind if we are just about to go climbing trees or something, he doesn't have them before school.

All that energy to burn off as a baby? Wouldn't it just be really frustrating for them and make their behaviour a bit hard to cope with?

Hurr1cane · 03/09/2014 16:10

Oh and DS loves olives and humous, but he is also quite partial to the odd spider and mud ball.

Arscal · 03/09/2014 16:11

Definitely ignore the comments alluding to PFB, I wouldn't let my 2nd and 3rd eat sugary cereals for breakfast! I'm not anti a sweet treat BTW but I like them to have decent breakfast.

LumpenproletariatAndProud · 03/09/2014 16:12

If theres 5g of sugar per 30g serving then theres definitely not 37% worth of sugar in coco pops Hmm

Hurr1cane · 03/09/2014 16:15

My coco pops box says 11g sugar per serving

Hurr1cane · 03/09/2014 16:15

210 mg sodium

Hurr1cane · 03/09/2014 16:16

And that's real coco pops, the supermarket branded ones are usually a bit higher, and nurseries normally buy supermarket branded stuff

threepiecesuite · 03/09/2014 16:17

I'd be cross too. My 4 year old has never had chocolate cereal. I used to be annoyed that they offered Frosties at nursery.

MrsGeorgeMichael · 03/09/2014 16:22

In a professional capacity i have seen coco pops only being served in 1 nursery.
It was the worst day care place i had ever been in

i would look at the nursery with your eyes wide open (thin edge of the wedge and all that)

this is from one of the most laid back parents about, honest! but bloody hell no need to feed a baby coco pops. We have 1 box a year during the summer holidays and it is the biggest treat ever lol

TheLovelyBoots · 03/09/2014 16:22

I can't believe that anyone would feed an 11-month old coco pops. Much less a childcare professional.

imip · 03/09/2014 16:23

I have 4 dds and would not let dd4 have coco pops. Not just at that age either...

Dd1 is 8 and doesn't have coco pops. Not crash hot about her having too many processed cereals to be honest. Not just the sugar, the salt as well.

My dcs have junk, but not around breakfast time.

At a nursery, it is really terrible...

PumpkinBones · 03/09/2014 16:25

One one hand I do get the objection, my pfb only had unsweetened porridge until he was 5 and my mum gave him oatso simple with syrup, I wanted him to have less of a sweet tooth ideally.
On the other, I do think when you use childcare, you do have to
compromise a bit - that is just reality. DS1 was given chocolate biscuits by a CM, which at the time he didn't have at home - but he was there just 3 afternoons a week and she was fantastic. So I let it go. I understand that you can take the view that it isn't ok to compromise on your child's health - I think you just need to look at it in context. Is it a regular thing? Are you happy with other meals / snacks? How often does he go? Etc.

YANBU at all, I would not be impressed with that.

SunnyRandall · 03/09/2014 16:33

www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/cereal-offenders-sugar-loaded-kids-breakfasts-686305

Sorry 35% not 37

Coco Pops and Crunchy Nut Cornflakes had 35g of sugar per 100g - the equivalent of seven teaspoons while Crunchy Nut Clusters had 25g or five teaspoons of sugar.

LoafersOrLouboutins · 03/09/2014 16:34

I'd be really pissed off! YANBU. You should send an email and speak to the manager next time you drop your DC off. Porridge, fruit or whole grain cereal would be far more appropriate.

ArabellaTarantella · 03/09/2014 16:35

It will all be forgotten by the time he is 5, I can assure you, OP.

Steelojames · 03/09/2014 16:36

Why all the sarcastic comments??
I'm not sure why the need.
Thanks for those taking me seriously. He was offered them at breakfast the book says.

Steelojames · 03/09/2014 16:41

He just started on Monday.
Was very happy with the menu and everything else. Yesterday he had Weetabix and porridge the day b4...so not sure if it's a one off as only third day today. He will be full time 5 days a week so concerned if this is likely to be a common occurance.

Why would a nursery even have Coco Pops available? They are completely and utterly without nutrition. Even more ridiculous for a baby.

I wasn't particularly impressed by my toddler getting Rice Krispies at nursery but Coco pops are even worse. YANBU to be cross and of course you should ask for an alternative.

TheLovelyBoots · 03/09/2014 16:41

Ignore the PFB comments. This isn't grandparents feeding your child coco pops, it's a nursery! They're supposed to serve good food.

TheLovelyBoots · 03/09/2014 16:43

I wouldn't be pleased with Rice Krispies either. An 11 month old should be delighted to eat porridge with fruit.

KnackeredMuchly · 03/09/2014 16:45

I wouldn't be upset he ate coco pops, but it shows they are in circulation and likely to be fed to him again. I don't think that's appropriate and yanbu to voice your disappointment.

I fed my pfb weetos around the same age
