Al Pacino has ruined my day

DM rang last night and told me she had watched a film starring Al Paseeno -that's how she pronounced his name. DM has done this before, and I told her it's not 'Al Paseeno, it's Al Pachino'. So I told her again last night it's Al fucking Pachino.

DM is all narky with me today because I corrected her speech. Well, I said, when you call him 'Al Paseeno' it makes my teeth itch; which is apparently not good enough defence for correcting her and highly bad manners.

She has other words which I don't correct, keybab is one example.

I ended up apologising!

Surf have you come across BrisbaneD for Brisbane? Don't know where the random d came into it!

Surfsup1 · 04/09/2014 10:21

Evans does she not know the name is Maria or could it just be her own little nn? My SIL is Marisa, but one of her friends only calls her Marie. Also, I have a friend called Charlie, but I generally call her Charles (no one else does this).

EvansOvalPiesYumYum · 04/09/2014 10:26

No, definitely not a nickname Surf and she must know after all these years - the rest of us manage to say it correctly! She just doesn't seem to be able to say Mar-ee-a. It is very odd.

Surfsup1 · 04/09/2014 10:27

Haven't heard that one Banana, but I'm from Sydney, so it's generally referred to as Brisvegas!
I think I will slowly back away from discussing Australian accent issues and mispronunciations - it's a whole other thread! Grin

bananaleaf · 04/09/2014 10:35

Oh yes! Grin

OcadoSubstitutedMyHummus · 04/09/2014 10:36

Our last temp secretary at work always said "pacific/pacfically" rather than "specific/specifically". Nooooooo! I couldn't bear it and I'm afraid I blackballed the idea of her staying on.

PurpleWolfe · 04/09/2014 10:51

My ex used to say 't'marrow' instead of tomorrow and 'rahlway' instead of railway! He also says 'Mataland' and can't help himself pronouncing one the the DC's friend as 'Cailtand'! You can take the boy out of Enfield but...... !Still take the piss out of him about it. Smile

Surfsup1 · 04/09/2014 10:54

My friends DM says punkin instead of pumpkin.

My DS (5) says we live in X-trailia. Actually sounds pretty cool.

EvansOvalPiesYumYum · 04/09/2014 10:59

MiL says 'olladee' for 'holiday'. Chewsdee for Tuesday. That's probably an accent
FiL has to go for regular kidney treatment at St Helier's hospital in Epsom. Everyone around here pronounces it as St Hillier's.
I want to scream - can you not see the letter "e"?????????

EvansOvalPiesYumYum · 04/09/2014 11:00

Starting to wonder now - do I mispronounce anything?? Grin

sashh · 04/09/2014 11:08

I think some of these are always wrong, such as specific/pacific but some can be local accents.

In some parts of Yorkshire the letter 'd' in the middle of a word is sounded as a 't' which possibly dates back to Viking influence.

If you don't believe me ask anyone from Bradford where they live.

Surfsup1 · 04/09/2014 11:09

Depends on your accent and who you're asking Evans!

Thumbwitch · 04/09/2014 11:18

I'm mostly getting used to Australianisms but one that perpetually makes me twitch is pronouncing maroon as marrone.

Amandaclarke · 04/09/2014 11:23

Two friends one says Baslamic and the other one says Paella-elia

DM is the best we have Birminham, Thee-etter, Korihso (took us ages to work out it was a chorizo starter she had made). She has quite a few more but we are not allowed to correct her anymore as some of her friends have tried to correct her and she is now getting defensive. If we try and correct her she rolls out the little saying "you say tomatoe, I say tomayto" as some way of explantion.

AbbieHoffmansAfro · 04/09/2014 11:42

I forgot my best one! My friend's cousin actually thought DKNY was not D.K.N.Y. but 'Diknee'. Of course, it amused us so much we just say 'Diknee' now.

Surfsup1 · 04/09/2014 11:45

State of Origin must be a very trying time for you Thumb!

r2d2ismyidealman · 04/09/2014 11:52

My Dad is for some reason wary of the z in Alzheimer's. He tries a few different things. One sounds like a German pronouncing "Old Timers", alternatively "olheimers". I've never said anything to him, I wouldn't want to offend him!

Thumbwitch · 04/09/2014 13:32

Bloody right it is, Surfsup! Grin[groan]

KoalaDownUnder · 04/09/2014 15:49

Surfsup, you weirdo Grin, nobody in Australia pronounces 'worry' like 'sorry'! It rhymes with hurry and curry.

CradleCrapNap · 04/09/2014 20:35

I guess this is a bit specialist but I will never ever forget it. I asked the third year physio student I was mentoring to do an end of placement presentation. He should have know that norepinephrine is the American word for noradrenaline, but he clearly had never heard of it and called it ner-PINE-frine. I cringed but didn't want to point it out whilst he was in mid flow. He then said it about 30 times during the rest of the presentation....it was so painful that I didn't pay attention to what he was saying. Wish I'd corrected the first one!

CradleCrapNap · 04/09/2014 20:40

Also, my ex colleague says buzz instead of bus. Annoyed me every.single.time. Which was on a daily basis due to our work.

CradleCrapNap · 04/09/2014 20:55

Just remembered another classic. Once told a friend her age was very hot. She said, 'don't worry, I've got domestos hands'. I nearly died laughing.

I have some crackers… Father in law; Eye-talian instead of Italian (why? why, why, why?) my mother; birth-ay instead of birthday (cortisol shoots up with this one) and husband says 'pewdantic' instead of pedantic (oh, the irony…)

MrsCosmopilite · 04/09/2014 22:00

I used to be friends with someone who ate 'shock-lit' on a regular basis. That's chocolate to normal people.

Oh, and the school I attended was highly populated with people who wanted to 'aks' a question, and that ate 'crips'.
