Al Pacino has ruined my day

DM rang last night and told me she had watched a film starring Al Paseeno -that's how she pronounced his name. DM has done this before, and I told her it's not 'Al Paseeno, it's Al Pachino'. So I told her again last night it's Al fucking Pachino.

DM is all narky with me today because I corrected her speech. Well, I said, when you call him 'Al Paseeno' it makes my teeth itch; which is apparently not good enough defence for correcting her and highly bad manners.

She has other words which I don't correct, keybab is one example.

I ended up apologising!

My husband used to call shepherd's pie shefferd's pie.

his reasoning being that ph = f

He is only alive today Grin because a) English is his third language and b) he also used to say the letter R in the most sexy way ever (a knee trembling growly roll)

But it took me ages to prove that it is shePherd and therefore ShePherd's pie because shepherd is a contraction of sheep herder.

squoosh · 03/09/2014 12:23

Probably because of the Beatles song. That's MEE-shell.

Thumbwitch · 03/09/2014 12:50

I've just remembered one I did - was playing a game like Top Trumps (not that though) and had to think of the name of a fast sports car - came up with Lanzarote. No one noticed for a while and then one of the boys went - uh, hang on...

I meant Maserati.

carriemeatsix · 03/09/2014 16:14

EdYouKateShaun · 03/09/2014 16:34

SEAT Ibiza is say-at ee-bee-tha

Not eye-bee-tha. There is only one pronunciation for the letter I in Spanish. And it's ee.

ruralmyth · 03/09/2014 16:38

no1shoppaholic · 03/09/2014 16:54

I know someone who thinks you go trickle treating at Halloween.. And also saw someone recently trying to sell a Chester drawers on Facebook recently Shock

EvansOvalPiesYumYum · 03/09/2014 17:33

Actually, EdYouKateShaun, although you are correct in correcting my "Ibiza" (you are right, it is not Eye-beetha", it should be I-beetha, (not Eebeetha). Ee is not the only sound the 'i' in Spanish makes. It can also be 'i' or 'e' (as in phonetics. Sometimes, it depends upon where in the word it appears).

eg, incognito. The first letter 'i' is pronounced 'i' , as you would for 'in', second letter 'i' is pronounced as 'e' (as you would in 'net) (not 'ee' for either)

imitar (to imitate) both of the letters 'i' are pronounced as 'e'

Our Spanish teacher taught us the correct, school standard for pronunciation. Then we had a student teacher from South America, who told us off, for instance, for pronouncing the 'z' and 'ci' as 'th' as we had been taught. We had to pronounce them with an 's' sound for her.

Probably a lot of pronunciations are, as anywhere in the world, dependent upon accents and colloquialisms Grin

EvansOvalPiesYumYum · 03/09/2014 17:34

(At least no-one has suggested Ibeezza"-Arf)

Idontneedanotherhero · 03/09/2014 19:48

The best one ever (not technically a mispronunciation though) was when I saw someone denouncing their treacherous friend on Facebook for being "tooth faced".....

foreverdieting · 03/09/2014 20:01

My ex mil says 'jewvay' instead of duvet and 'beardroom' instead of bedroom.

How do these people not know???!!

hamptoncourt · 03/09/2014 20:16

You are all wrong!!

All the teenagers round these parts refer to Ibiza simply as "Beefer" Grin

EvansOvalPiesYumYum · 03/09/2014 20:25

HamptonCourt Grin Grin Grin

RaisingSteam · 03/09/2014 20:40

Ah, more on my car! I love "Beefer" actually, except I live in the Midlands, so possibly it would be "Boifer". (These are starting to sound like the company of Thorin Oakenshield).

It is tricky to say it in normal conversation without coming back to the affected foreign pronunciation problem. If you know the pronunciation of a language it's OK, otherwise it sounds weird.

I'm working on "i"-beetha and resisting the urge to rhyme with pizza.

Life was easier with a Golf, although (to start another one) I do say "Follks-Vargen" because I've studied German but don't know a word of Spanish. No objection?

Blush I have recently taken to pronouncing chihuahua as 'Ch-Hoo-ahHoo-ah'. This is the fault of Mark Kermode and, even though I know how the word should be said, I cannot seem to stop .

Someone, somewhere, is judging me on this I am sure.

DiscoDancer · 03/09/2014 21:07

DH, intelligent man usually, just told me that he found some pasta in DS's dungareens. I've stopped correcting him. No idea where he gets the 'n' fromConfused

Lucy61 · 03/09/2014 21:15

My mother says Baby Gam instead of Birmingham! Shock

imonalaptop · 03/09/2014 21:27

People who say 'cant be asked' (arsed), and say of instead of have - could of (have)

imonalaptop · 03/09/2014 21:29

Mind you, I never knew the correct way to say quinoa until recently.
And I say lartay.

LemonBreeland · 03/09/2014 21:29

Just thought of another one. Both my DM and MIL call Per Una at M&S Per Uno. I don't get it, they can read.

Also DM and myself pronounce Aldi differently, and I do wonder what others say. I say Aldee, like Albert, my Mum says Oldee.

Alwayswiththechords · 03/09/2014 21:37

My husband says 'yowth' (youth).
