Al Pacino has ruined my day

DM rang last night and told me she had watched a film starring Al Paseeno -that's how she pronounced his name. DM has done this before, and I told her it's not 'Al Paseeno, it's Al Pachino'. So I told her again last night it's Al fucking Pachino.

DM is all narky with me today because I corrected her speech. Well, I said, when you call him 'Al Paseeno' it makes my teeth itch; which is apparently not good enough defence for correcting her and highly bad manners.

She has other words which I don't correct, keybab is one example.

I ended up apologising!

redpickle that would INFURIATE ME TOO!

HenriettaTurkey · 02/09/2014 14:08

DH says chlolestrol and Pon-tree-fact. It's quite cute...

Zara8 · 02/09/2014 14:11

I do the Muslim/muslin thing too ShockBlush

PetulaGordino · 02/09/2014 14:12

it's dutch in origin i think, but the tréma (two dots) is a french accent too (as in Noël)

Zara8 · 02/09/2014 14:16

I indirectly know someone whose daughter's name is Moët. With the umlauts. Pronounced mow-ay. Confused

Poor child!!!

EmberElftree · 02/09/2014 14:19

OMG Zara that's good - hope she has an unusual surname?

My hub works with a guy who called his son Petrus Shock

OooOooTheMonkey · 02/09/2014 14:21

God I've been saying moay for years thinking I'm right. How embarrassing! ??

penne - according to my lovely Italian friend is PEH -ney emphasis on the first syllable....

and bruschetta - is broosk-ett-a with a pause on the tt

skyninja · 02/09/2014 14:25

DH calls prosecco proshecco, like prosciutto, which he sometimes calls proskooto.

However, there are probably many foreign words I don't pronounce correctly.

Tall-ert for toilet. Actually I really dislike toilet, much prefer loo.

I know a few people (adults) who call skeletons 'skellingtons'

squoosh · 02/09/2014 14:26

I remember having an argument with a group of people about the pronunciation of Moët.

They all smiled indulgently at me as if to say 'oh you silly little oik'.

Well HA!, I had the last laugh when I proved them to be so wrong, wrong, wrong.

idlefolly · 02/09/2014 14:32

My MIL calls balsamic vinegar 'bazmatic' vinegar.

skyninja · 02/09/2014 14:38

Is the t pronounced in Moet because the next word begins with a vowel?

Studied French for years but never knew it was Mo-et. Not that I have need to say Moet et Chandon much, nor any of the other proper champagnes, as I have more of a Cava budget.

DH calls Peugeots pew-jot, I suspect only to annoy me. It works.

I know in Italian words you do pause slightly on the double letters, as per JustAShopGirl said, my BIL is from Rome and SIL lived out there for years and years. She laughs at our murdering of the lovely language.

But as much as l love languages, and try very hard when abroad, in the UK I feel a bit of a tit saying foreign words with the accent!

Zara8 · 02/09/2014 14:39

No Ember it's a very ordinary surname, like Smith or Wilson etc...!

From what I see on Facebook she seems to be a delightful little girl. However I am still slightly mortified for her sake....

CookieB · 02/09/2014 14:39

Mataland Angry. It's MATALAN. Stupid clothes shop comes up far too often in conversations with dm. I correct her every.single.time. Makes me want to rip off my own ears. She has a lot of throws too and they're all fox fur don't you know? Faux means fake ffs Confused!

anniefernakerpan · 02/09/2014 14:41

My lovely Mum pronounces Prosecco as Proseccio, but even better, the US supermarket chain Publix is now and forever called Pubix in our house! Thanks Mum

CookieB · 02/09/2014 14:42

Oh, that rhymes.

squoosh · 02/09/2014 14:42

Moët isn't a French surname that's why French rules of pronunciation do not apply.

squoosh · 02/09/2014 14:44

Hennessy cognac is another famous French drinks house with a foreign (Irish) name.

BlessThisMess · 02/09/2014 14:44

My Dad says "Mer-see-deez" for a Mercedes - fortunately being a family of limited means it's not something he has to say very often, but it always annoys me!

My DD2 used to say "Elvis Precisely" when she was younger so that's what we always call him now Grin .

EmberElftree · 02/09/2014 14:46

Aw bless her Zara I was thinking Smith funnily enough! I knew a Mercedes once (she wasn't Spanish). Her mum used to screech it at her "mur-say-deeeeeez" what a shame.

Lemele · 02/09/2014 14:52

My dh pronounces almonds 'oll-monds' (similar to american but not quite). He refuses to back down even though I have researched it just to make absolutely sure I was pronouncing it correctly! (It's ah-monds, for those who don't know...silent L)

I saw an Ikea advert (I've never ever heard it pronounced anything other than eye-kia here in the UK) which said something along the lines of ikk-ey-a. Whether we're wrong or not, I'm certain us Brits will continue pronouncing it our own way Grin

I will admit to saying decrepid at times... in my defence, it's because my parents, who went on and ON at us about dropping 'T's, never once said it clearly (it was a favoured word in our house) and so I still find it hard to remind myself what the word actually is!

I have a friend who split up with her BF partly because he couldn't pronounce anything correctly and refused to be told otherwise. 'Skellington' instead of skeleton was her biggest bugbear. Plus they had a massive row because he refused to believe her road name (Poplar Road as in the tree) was not pronounced 'Popular'. He wouldn't have it! At work I have trouble not correcting clients who say 'renumeration' instead of 'remuneration', but I think that's an accountant thing!

Thumbwitch · 02/09/2014 15:27

Piper-Heidsieck is another bugger to pronounce if you don't know it!

I blame Freddie Mercury for all the Mo-ays out there. Wink

A friend used to say "wron't" instead of won't when she was a little girl. No idea why, no one else in her family did - but she did grow out of it. :)

One that really makes me spit feathers is DH's pronunciation of the German word "tod" (dead). I have no idea why he thinks it is pronounced "toit" (it isn't) and I have tried for many years to correct it (he likes to use it every now and then just for fun Hmm) but he Won't Be Told. Angry
