To not want to pay this?

I've just had a dental implant done today and I'm left feeling a little bit furious to have been stung with an extra €250 cost.

The implant in total was for €999 including crown etc which is an amazing price for here in Ireland, it's usually more than double the price anywhere else. But as I was waiting in the waiting room (for 2 and half hours) I got talking to many other patients and was hearing so many people saying the deal was amazing but they had extra complications so had to pay a few extra hundred. They seemed really accepting of this and I thought well it definitely can't happen to me as I've given a panoramic X-ray and made sure loads of times to clarify there is no hidden charges as I've had to get a loan for this.
So after drilling into my bloody jaw bone he tells me he's going to have to add some bone (?!) And it will cost an extra 250. I said no sorry I don't have it I'll have to leave it and he said well I've already drilled the hole, you can pay in six months etc. So I begrudgingly let him get on with it but afterwards the six months had become one month. I'm really annoyed!!

I'm worried if I bring it up and say I'm not happy that it'll jeopardize the rest of my treatment, stitches out, healing cap put on and crown etc.

Am I being miserly? It's a great deal, that's undeniable so should I just get on with it? I just can't help feel a bit robbed!

YANBU I had an inplant several years ago and I have never heard of having to have extra bone put in! Hopefully some dentists are also MNers and will advise you.

Getting implant on Monday in Scotland. Been quoted £399, and have advised no hidden costs. He's taking the piss.

camtt · 30/08/2014 21:14

I think they are taking the piss and you should contact your equivalent of the office of fair trading - sounds as if they offer a low price to get you in then make sure you pay more in the end. Ask around/do some online research about the extra bone thing, is it a genuine procedure when having an implant?

Mushypeasandchipstogo · 30/08/2014 21:22

Just Googled it and yes sometimes bone grafting is required!

Purplepoodle · 30/08/2014 21:22

I would be reiterating that you were told 6 months for the extra money and you don't have it now. That gives you time to finish treatment and find out if he's taking the piss

"Getting implant on Monday in Scotland. Been quoted £399, and have advised no hidden costs"

Wow! Amazing price. Can you say where?

MoonlightandRoses · 30/08/2014 21:32

It does sound extremely dodgy - is there anywhere you can get a second opinion on whether it was actually necessary? Also, would it have been something that should have been picked up from the x-ray? You might end up having to pay anyway, but I think I'd definitely be pushing fairly hard not to first.

Fanfeckintastic · 30/08/2014 21:50

Yeah I definitely won't pay it within the month there's no way I can afford to, I'll pay 50 here and there but want to make sure everything heals and the implant takes etc.

Definitely feel like he's taking the piss, I wouldn't be so cynical if it didn't seem like everybody else needed this bone grafting too.

I can't afford to go anywhere else as they've taken €1000 off my card and I'd be charged to see anyone else Sad

I would be gobsmacked if you are getting an implant for £399. Can you say what system they are using? What tooth is it replacing? Are you having immediate loading or a healing abutment? What sort of crown are they using? And what is the timeline to completion.

hennybeans · 30/08/2014 22:10

I got an implant 6 weeks ago and am going next week for crown to be fitted. Mine cost £2000. My dentist is very professional and explained several times that it might be necessary to use a bone graft (it wouldn't cost extra if needed). He explained that after looking at my xray it seemed as if I wouldn't need it (I didn't) but he couldn't be sure until he actually got 'in'.

How much time did you dentist set aside to explain the procedure? I can't believe that he didn't mention anything about this bone until you needed it and then expected you to make a decision re paying extra with a hole in your jawbone. You didn't have much choice.

It just sounds so dodgy and I think if you're paying half of what other dentists are charging, that should set alarm bells ringing.

PrimalLass · 30/08/2014 22:18

How sore is it please?

And sillystring - where please?

Fanfeckintastic · 30/08/2014 23:52

The procedure itself honestly isn't sore, unpleasant because you know what's happening (knowing someone is drilling my jaw bone is unsettling to say the least) but honestly it wasn't even half as bad as I expected. Little sore now but nothing more than having an extraction.

I know henny, I had only heard really positive things though.

My DH had 2 implants and had to have bone grafting beforehand. His teeth were knocked out when he got assaulted though, so I think it caused more damage Sad
