To think part timers shouldn't work more weekends

Than full timers?

Just been shown my new proposed roster. I work 24 hours a week shifts job share. I have the same set 2 days off in the week and my job share covers those as I do her set 2 days. This has been in place 5 years by way of agreed flexible working.

Fast forward to me going back from maternity leave I have been given a roster which put me on 3 weekends out of 4 on 12 hour shifts. I used to do 2 out of 4 on 8 hour shifts. The full timers are still rostered on 2 out of 4 weekends.

When we queried it we were told well you awe getting to keep your set days off. In my mind one has nothing to do with the other and part timers are being given the bulk of the weekends.

Aibu to think this is unfair to part time staff?

Are the public holidays rostered fairly?

Whatutalkinboutwillis · 30/08/2014 11:25

Toomanypasswords sounds like we have the same situation.

I am in the union at work but have never used it don't even know where to start. I spoke to Acas who said it did sound like I had a case for discrimination.

What do I do on Monday? I have not responded to the email as yet. Do I just say I will take further advice and go to my union?

It's a rolling roster so yes fairly split public holidays. We all take a turn.

I effectively have a job share, but as the post was not originally advertised as a job share, my partner and I are counted as two separate employees, not one which I think is fair enough tbh.

You aren't happy so you clearly have reason to try to negotiate. And I don't pretend to know anything about the law surrounding this stuff because I don't. But if there is a situation where someone will always have to work more, there is nothing to say that either the full timers or the part timers should do it.

Maybe the whole thing could work more fairly for everyone if you and the other part timer didn't have set days off in the week and were instead just rostered across the week for the hours you are each contracted to do.

Whatutalkinboutwillis · 30/08/2014 11:30

We spoke about doing that and just swapping days. However we both need the certainty of set days for nursery. I couldn't afford to pay nursery 5 days when potentially only working 1 or up to 3 days in the week. It worked for 5 years with no issues and I don't see that the flexible working agreement has a bearing over how weekends are split. Don't mean that to sound rude and come across as I want it ally way it's just something worked for 5 years that was fair to everyone now it seems very unbalanced

I don't see how they could take your flexible working agreement away from you after 5 years. Though I am not a lawyer or union bod.

WooWooOwl · 30/08/2014 13:26

Could it be becoming a problem now because the full timers have complained or asked for more weekends off?

rollonthesummer · 30/08/2014 13:42

I'm a teacher and job shares are never treated loke one person (as other posters have suggested a job share should be) . Each has to do a playground duty, each has to do a late room duty, each has to do an early morning stint, each does an assembly etc etc

They get their money's worth out of job shares sometimes! What you're saying doesn't sound fair :(

BoneyBackJefferson · 30/08/2014 14:01

If the company works 365 then I suspect that as far as the company is concerned you are getting your weekends off, in that you have two days permanently set aside for being off.

Welshwabbit · 30/08/2014 14:06

If you are in the union, definitely go to them and tell your employer that you are doing so, and that you are not accepting the change in the rosta arrangements (best to do this in writing as you may have to work the new rosta temporarily whilst you get this sorted out, and you don't want them to say that you have accepted the new rosta by working it). Presumably you get communications from the union from time to time - e.g. letters? Find a number on one of them and they should be able to put you in touch with a local representative. Most unions have in-house solicitors so if your rep can't help, ask them to refer you on or take your case to the solicitor to get some detailed legal advice.

Viviennemary · 30/08/2014 14:21

I agree that it's unfair to part-time staff. They are entitled to free weekends as much as the fulltimers.

Welshwabbit · 01/09/2014 12:40

How is your first morning going, WhatutalkinaboutWillis?

Karsyn · 01/09/2014 13:13

I'm with the full tmerss. Part time people have 2 days off already, full timers on wknds have no days off.

You have 'weekends' (2 dates off/wk). Full timers don't get that.

Mandatorymongoose · 01/09/2014 14:13

I'm sure that people doing 40 hours don't get no days off. Just not the same days each week.

Mandatorymongoose · 01/09/2014 14:15

Blush double negative, I apologise.

I'm sure the people working 40 hours still get days off. Just not the same days each week.

ChoosandChipsandSealingWax · 01/09/2014 15:10

But Karsyn pension/pay/holiday will all be calculated on a part-time basis - when I was working three days a week all that stuff was pro-rated.
