AIBU to throw my sons birthday cake in the bin? Anyone else had a catering/party/cake disaster?

Have spent two days baking a mahhoosive cake for ds1 and ds2, party is tomorrow. Have spent all evening doing the icing, which went progressively from bad to worse. At about midnight I lost my temper with it and threw it in the bin. It was beyond repair.

Thing is I always do a feature cake for the kids birthdays, and they have always turned out well - they have become a bit of a talking point for friends and family and there are even fb posts saying things like "can't wait to see the cake tomorrow!"

Now I have no cake. Plan to nip to tesco's in the morning and buy one, but feel like I have let the boys down.

Anyone else had a catering/party/cake disaster?

I had a slightly GBBO-inspired cock up only last night. After seeing Diana's Baked Alaska I hit on the idea of making swan shaped meringue nests to fill with cream and fruit as we have the PILs coming to stay at the weekend and I though individual swan pavlovas might impress them.

It didn't start all that well because I misjudged how much meringue I would need and realised while piping out the bodies (which are the actual nests IYSWIM) that I needed to whip up as much again.

Anyway having completed the bodies I then piped some lovely delicate necks with a piece of flaked almond in each one for a beak. I made a couple extra in case of disasters; though I really hoped one of my extras wouldn't be required since the piping bag had a spurt so that particular swan looked like it had swallowed a big fish and got it stuck.

I baked them and left them in the oven to cool but, in getting them off the tray, I snapped all but three of these lovely necks - oh and of course one of the survivors is the one with the massive Adam's apple. So disappointed! I could just serve nests and make no mention of the swan idea but I am tempted to have another go at a batch of necks - surely if I make enough some of them will survive?
