To think that a trailer for a film rated 15 shouldn't be shown before a film rated 12A?

I took DSS 10 and his friend to see Guardians of the Galaxy. It's rated 12A and, having watched other Marvel films of the same rating I knew it would be fine for DSS and his friend to watch it.

The trailers before the film started were completely inappropriate, however! The first was for Sin City 2, which is an 18 - granted it probably didn't look very exciting to DSS and his friend. The second was for Let's be Cops, 15 rating - DSS and friend "haha that looks really funny, we want to see that" no as it's too old for you. And finally a trailer for Sex Tape! Completely inappropriate!

I emailed the cinema and explained this to them and the reply I received said, all the trailers featured 12A content so were fine.

Am I being unreasonable to think that just because you show the potted version of the 15/18 rated films doesn't mean they are fit to be shown before a film rated 12A?

"So it would be ok to have a film entitled Anal Fist Fuckers United as long as the suitable clip of a couple having tea was shown?
"

No, that wouldn't get through because the title alone would be beyond the classification.

There are lots of adverts for things that are unsuitable for U12s before 12A films, even before U films.

I do think it is uncomfortable when something has a title like Sex Tape, but as soon as they can read, newspaper headlines and all sorts of things draw attention to words and concepts like that.

Blu · 28/08/2014 20:12

And sorry, I think if it is a 12 or 12A classification YABU.

'Donkey Punch' was an 18 and the title was approved though Blu.

Wouldn't have wanted to explain that truthfully

PiperRose · 29/08/2014 23:19

YABU, Not all of the audience would have been children and the trailers would have in line with the rating of the film you had chosen to see. Any questions asked by your DC are for you to answer as you see fit.

sanfairyanne · 29/08/2014 23:23

so long as the ad was suitable, no issues

steff13 · 30/08/2014 04:06

They usually say that the trailer is suitable for all audiences before it begins.

That's interesting, we saw Guardians of the Galaxy, and the trailers were for two kids' movies - Big Hero 6 (a Disney cartoon) and Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day (based on a children's book).

SelfconfessedSpoonyFucker · 30/08/2014 05:43

OP I'm with you. Films are often rated high because of language or particular acts (of violence or sex), just because they don't show that particular bit of language or act doesn't mean that they are suitable for kids.

What if you have a kid who is fine with comic book characters but is shown a trailer about someone kidnapping a child from their room after dark? Even if no language or violence or nudity etc was shown, I can't imagine many parents of ten year olds would be happy about it, even if it was a cleaned up version.

If you make a film for 12 year olds or younger with an adult and make it about a comic book character you would be naive to think that a daytime or early evening showing wouldn't have a bunch of younger kids seeing it.

Annetter · 30/08/2014 05:52

I agree OP

Although I also get why people are saying it's ok I'm uselessly stuck on a fence

isitsnowingyet · 30/08/2014 06:05

acsec I am totally in agreement with you also. I would also go a step further and get shot down by all those liberal mumsnetters and say that TV adverts should not show trailers before 9pm for 18 films even though the content has been rated 'suitable' by some idiot.

My 9 year old has seen a trailer for some gross horror film and couldn't sleep for a few nights as she was terrified from that trailer.

In the age of Netflix classification by age is meaningless, so YABU
